Budd Friedman, comedy club pioneer and founder of the original Improv comedy club, has died. He was 90. Friedman died Saturday of heart failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, his wife, Alix, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Friedman founded the original Improv in New York City in 1963, giving early career breaks to comedians and acting superstars like Jay Leno, Bette Midler, Richard Pryor and more.
He opened his second location in Hollywood in 1975, just three years after Johnny Carson moved “The Tonight Show” from New York to Los Angeles, marking the brand’s first expansion. Friedman and his partner, Mark Lonow, would go on to open 22 Improvs across 12 states before selling the company in February 2018 to Levity Entertainment Group.
His comedy clubs also helped provide a platform for superstars like Adam Sandler, Richard Lewis, Dick Cavett, David Steinberg, Steve Landesberg, David Brenner, Lily Tomlin, Freddie Prinze, Gabe Kaplan, Chris Rock,...

ABC is celebrating Norman Lear’s 100th birthday with a television special on Sept. 22.
Variety was on hand for exclusive interviews with Lear and his starry guests as they made their way into the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel earlier this month for the filming of the show, “Norman Lear: 100 Years of Music and Laughter.”
Lear, who turned 100 on July 27, has famously credited laughing as the key to living a long life. He also told me that staying in the present is equally as important. “We don’t pay enough attention to the words ‘over’ and ‘next,'” he said. “When something is over, it’s over and we’re all onto the next. If there was a hammock in the middle, that would be the best description I could offer for living in the moment.”
Below, Lear’s friends and the stars of his most famous sitcoms recall meeting the icon for the first time.

The teenage comedian who built an empire; the media mogul who became an activist. Byron Allen, chairman and CEO of Allen Media Group (Amg) and Entertainment Studios, is a big thinker who takes his cues from the likes of Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford and John D. Rockefeller.
But it isn’t blind ambition that has pushed Allen to acquire 27 ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox network affiliate broadcast stations, 12 24-hour HD television networks, The Weather Channel, Black News Channel (which he folded into network and website The Grio), digital network HBCUGo and a number of online destinations. His professional conquests have always aligned with his personal goal of promoting racial equality. To enact change, you have to be at the top of the food chain.
“Don’t just play the game, own the game,” Allen told TheWrap for this week’s Office With a View.

Stephen Colbert made his return to CBS’ “The Late Show” on Monday night after recovering from Covid, and he was concerned to hear that another late night host — Jimmy Kimmel — has now contracted the virus.
But first, he explained that not only is he, “back, baby,” but he is doing well following his own illness.
“Now, you may have read in the New England Journal of Hot Goss that I had the Covid, and I’m very grateful that I am fully vaxxed and boosted. Feeling fine … Thank you science,” Colbert said. “But still, like I say, Covid is no fun. The first three days sucked and by day 6, I was testing negative, and now, on day 12 I’m back with a serious head cold, so go figure.”
He then quickly addressed the news that broke earlier on Monday that Kimmel was stepping back from his late night show, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!...

Johnny Brown, the actor, comedian and singer best known for his role as superintendent Nathan Bookman on the popular 70s sitcom “Good Times,” died Wednesday. He was 84 years old.
Brown’s death was confirmed by his daughter, Broadway actress Sharon Catherine Brown, through a post shared on her Instagram. No further details on Brown’s death are available at this time.
“He was literally snatched out of our lives. It’s not real for us yet,” Sharon Catherine Brown wrote. “So there will be more to say but not now. Dad was the absolute best. We love him so very much.”
Prior to his sitcom stardom, Brown was a seasoned entertainment veteran, regularly performing in nightclub acts with his future wife, June Russell. Early in his career he dabbled in recording music, releasing the single “Walkin’, Talkin’, Kissin’ Doll” for Columbia Records in 1961 and “You’re Too Much in Love...

Getting fired from Good Times is one of the best things that could have ever happened to John Amos.
After three seasons of fighting with executive producer Norman Lear and the CBS sitcom’s white writers about the stereotypical Black portrayals and dialogue the show perpetuated, particularly when it came to star Jimmie Walker, Amos’ contract to play patriarch James Evans wasn’t renewed at the end of Season 3 in 1976 and his character was killed off.

The producers behind CNN’s new eight-part docuseries “History of the Sitcom” knew that trying to tell the complete 70-year history of the TV genre would be an impossible task. So they divided some of the biggest comedies of all time into specific categories — and set out to illustrate how the evolution of the sitcom mirrored real-life advancements in society.
“It was pretty apparent that given the number of sitcoms that have been out there in history that you couldn’t do some sort of comprehensive, start-to-finish history, as though you were in a college course studying it from beginning to end,” says executive producer Bill Carter. “There had to be a way to categorize them and follow them according to some grouping. We have eight episodes; we could have done at least 80.”

Joss Whedon threatened Gal Gadot’s career after she pushed back on the director’s revised dialogue for “Justice League,” according to a story in The Hollywood Reporter.
The new detail that Whedon feuded with Gadot and even disparaged “Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins came as part of a lengthy interview with Ray Fisher that goes into more detail about his ongoing criticisms of Warner Bros. executives and Whedon.
Fisher declined to comment to THR specifically on anything that transpired between Gadot and the “Justice League” director. But THR quoted a witness who later spoke with investigators as part of the studio’s look into the production who said, “Joss was bragging that he’s had it out with Gal. He told her he’s the writer and she’s going to shut up and say the lines and he can make her look incredibly stupid in this movie.”

Over the last year, “Justice League” star Ray Fisher has used social media to speak out against both the film’s reshoot director Joss Whedon and Warner Bros. executives, but he’s now given his first full sit-down interview on the matter with The Hollywood Reporter. Included in the lengthy Fisher profile are details expanding on the allegedly fraught relationship between Whedon and Fisher’s “Justice League” co-star Gal Gadot.
The “Wonder Woman” actress said in December 2020 that her experience with Whedon was “not the best one,” and now THR reports that, per “a knowledgable source,” Gadot “had multiple concerns with the revised version” of “Justice League.”
The THR report claims that sources shared that “the biggest clash … came when Whedon pushed Gadot to record lines she didn’t like, threatened to harm Gadot’s career and disparaged ‘Wonder Woman’ director Patty Jenkins. While Fisher declines to discuss any of what transpired with Gadot,...

There’s a moment in the fourth episode of Showtime’s “The Comedy Store” where Neal Brennan is interviewing Jay Leno about what the former “Tonight Show” host thinks about the current use of podcasts as vehicles for stand-up comedians to both hone their craft and build name recognition. And while Leno’s extended “podcasts are masturbation to stand-up’s carnal knowledge” metaphor is a simultaneous eye-roller/groaner, there’s an energy in this interaction missing from almost every other talking head interview in the series — and that’s likely because it’s the only time director Mike Binder is not conducting the interview.
Binder, whose bonafides include writing and directing “The Upside of Anger” and “Reign Over Me,” got his start at The Comedy Store during its heyday in the 1970s, where he became part of owner Mitzi Shore’s inaugural crop of regulars alongside giants of stand-up Robin Williams,...

Most people smile just at the mention of this show … nothing is more healthy than an old fashioned laugh. Zucker, Zucker & Abrahams’ non-stop joke fest finds good fun in movie spoofery without malice, and is populated by a squadron of old pros that once made the originals fly right, no matter how clunky they were. All hail Leslie Nielsen, Lloyd Bridges, Robert Stack and Peter Graves, the veterans of countless ‘keep a straight face and pretend it’s serious’ groaners. It’s a 40th Anniversary new restoration. Now, finally, do I park in the red zone or the white zone?

This is part of an ongoing series that looks at the history of disability issues in television. You can find part one in the series here. As a disabled writer, I will use both person-first and identity-first language interchangeably for purposes of brevity and clarity.
It’s easy to confuse the history of disability portrayals in TV sitcoms with the “very special episode” that specialized in dark topics followed by comforting homilies, all soundtracked by awkward laughter from the live studio audience. However, if you look back at the episodes that featured characters with disabilities, they weren’t the stuff of VSEs. They belonged to narratives about the disability, all with a single mantra: People with disabilities are simply people.
An innocuous, if obvious, lesson, but here’s where the Vse confusion might arise: These sitcoms didn’t feature full-fledged disabled characters. They tended to be two-dimensional cardboard cutouts that...

(Updated with Norman Lear remarks) Just over two months after she wowed the crowd at ABC’s Live in Front of a Studio Audience: All in the Family & Good Times, Ja’net DuBois died suddenly today. She was 74.
As confirmed by her family and those close to the two-time Emmy winner, the seemingly healthy DuBois died early Tuesday in her sleep at her home in Glendale, CA.
She was known for making some of the greatest entrances in sitcom history week after week as neighbor Willona Woods on Good Times, the groundbreaking 1970s sitcom starring Esther Rolle, John Amos, Jimmie Walker and Janet Jackson. Back in December of last year, DuBois joined Walker and co-star Bern Nadette Stanis for an appearance on the latest live retelling of one of Norman Lear’s classic TV shows – and she stole the star-studded show with pure pizzazz.
Good Times wasn’t DuBois’ only connection to Learland.

Pamela Adlon is a child of television — literally. Not only was the small screen a tremendous influence on the “Better Things” creator and star while she was growing up, but as a young actress she also made an impression on some of those very same iconic series.
Among Adlon’s early credits are “The Facts of Life” and “The Jeffersons.” In the eleventh season “The Jeffersons” episode “Try a Little Tenderness,” Adlon played a young hoodlum who robbed one of George Jefferson’s dry cleaners.
“Louise thought she could turn around some street kids and George was like, ‘No, you can’t,'” Adlon recalled. “He caught me robbing the dry cleaners and they take me up to their apartment with my other streetrat friend and they turned him around. [But] in the end I still picked George’s pocket. And Weezie looks at him and says, ‘You were right, George!

“I Am Richard Pryor,” a look at a comedy legend who reinvented stand-up with his confessional style of humor, is being produced for Paramount Network. The film follows Richard Pryor as he rises from his impoverished childhood, growing up in a brothel run by his grandmother, to become the highest-paid performer in the entertainment industry. In addition to being a stand-up legend and a keen social critic of race in America, Pryor starred in “Stir Crazy,” “Silver Streak,” and other Hollywood blockbusters.
The film will be executive produced by Jennifer Lee Pryor, the late comic’s wife. It is being backed by filmmaker Derik Murray’s Network Entertainment and is part of the company’s “I Am” series. The documentaries look at celebrities such as Paul Walker, Heath Ledger, and Steve McQueen.

Diversity was the theme at the start of this year’s Primetime Emmys ceremony, which kicked off with a tongue-in-cheek song-and-dance number in which Kenan Thompson, Kate McKinnon and a variety of other Emmy nominated celebs congratulated the Emmys for their inclusive slate of nominees — “We solved it!” But that theme was somewhat overshadowed by a fast-paced ceremony that took risks — some more successful than others — and gave us some jaw-dropping surprise winners as well as some truly memorable speeches.

Did Jaleel White‘s performance as Family Matters‘ Steve Urkel somehow lead to the election of President Barack Obama? Probably not, but it was a question raised during Monday’s Emmy Awards as co-host Michael Che went out into the world to deliver “reparation Emmys” to black actors he feels were snubbed by the academy.
In what was easily one of the funnier sketches of the night, Che presented several iconic television actors with a long-overdue Emmy statue. Recipients included Tichina Arnold for Martin and Everybody Hates Chris, Kadeem Hardison for A Different World and White for Family Matters. (When...

Emmys co-host Michael Che tried to make up for years without the TV Academy’s acknowledgment of black actors with a “Reparation Emmy.” Meeting his childhood heroes like Kadeem Hardison of A Different World, Everybody Hates Chris’ Tichina Arnold and Jimmie Walker of Good Times (who found the award “Dy-namic”), Che offered an Emmy he took from Bill Cosby. Needless to say, many passed on the tainted hand-me-down.

The "Target Effect" Is Real! Experts Reveal Why You Can't Just Buy One Item While Shopping At Target
Have you ever walked into Target with a set shopping list but ended up leaving the store with more items than you planned? Well apparently, there's a scientific explanation for your excessive spending called the "Target Effect." Earlier this week, People pointed out that Urban Dictionary defines the "Target Effect" as "the result of going into a store, intending to buy a few things, and leaving with much more," which "frequently happens while shopping at Target." But if you tend to shop at a lot of department stores, then you know that this experience may not just happen at Target. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) Tom Meyvis, a New York University marketing professor, previously told Refinery29 that stores like Target and Walmart carefully plan out how they sell their merchandise to get people to purchase things they don't necessarily need. "Walmart was once famous for doing things like putting like Band-Aids...

As wisecracking J.J. Evans on the hit 1970s sitcom Good Times, Jimmie Walker swept the nation with his catchphrase "Dyn-o-mite!" But in his mind, he never became a superstar. "People think it happened to me, but it didn’t," he exclusively told Closer Weekly in the magazine's latest issue, on newsstands now. "People knew who I was, but they knew who Charlie Manson was. Please, I’ll call you when I’m a superstar. I’ll say, 'Hey, remember me? Goodbye!'" Perhaps it’s this kind of humility that keeps Jimmie working so hard at 71. He still tours the country as a stand-up comic and recently released a special, We Are Still Here — available on Amazon, iTunes, and other platforms — with Police Academy sound-effects specialist Michael Winslow. Decades before leading his own multi-million media empire Entertainment Studios, Byron Allen was a teenage kid with a dream, standing in the parking lot of The Comedy Store on Sunset Blvd., watching his stand-up mentors go up on stage.
As Jim Carrey tweeted today, “If she loved you, you did well. If she didn’t, you did something else,” and Allen was one of the guys who did quite well by Shore. Not only was The Comedy Store the place where Jimmie Walker first recognized the young stand-up and enlisted him on his comedy writing team, but it’s also where Allen was first spotted by NBC talent scouts for his Tonight Show debut at 18 years-old and his long-running hosting stint alongside Fred Willard, Sarah Purcell, and Skip Stephenson on the network’s Emmy-winning reality comedy series Real People.
Allen met Comedy Store matriarch Mitzi Shore when he was 14 years old during the ’70s.

At age 14, Byron Allen was already doing stand-up, and one night at the Comedy Store, Wayne Kline, a writer on TV’s Good Times, happened to see his act. "He said, 'Can I get your phone number? Two weeks later, he was sitting in star Jimmie Walker's apartment alongside Jay Leno and David Letterman, writing material for the show. For three-time Oscar winners Stuart Craig and Colleen Atwood, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” offered fascinating stylistic departures. J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” standalone takes place in New York in 1926 — a time, of course, when the immigrant experience flourished.
“New York was all about diversity, and [director] David Yates wanted [to express that],” Atwood told IndieWire. “There were people new to New York and there were people that had been there for a generation — and it was an open-minded time.”
Thus, for both production and costume design, there was great class and cultural diversity to explore in architecture and wardrobes. Although they considered shooting in New York City, that proved to be impractical, so they returned to the back lot of Leavesden Studios outside of London.
“J.K. Rowling identified particular buildings in her script, including the Gothic Woolworth [for the Magical Congress headquarters], which at that time was the largest building in the world,” Craig told IndieWire.

There is a very fine performance embedded in Taylor Hackford’s otherwise enervating, overlong, patience-trying, and not very funny film The Comedian. However, that performance is not delivered by the putative headliner, Robert De Niro. He plays Jackie Burke, a comic who once starred in a popular sitcom, but is now reduced to playing small comedy clubs and participating in “Nostalgia Nights” with similarly faded TV stars (such as Jimmie Walker and Brooke Burke, who play themselves in cameos). Instead, one of the very few reasons to watch The Comedian is for Leslie Mann, who plays Harmony, Jackie’s eventual love interest (despite an almost 30-year age difference). They meet cute while working at a food pantry, both of them doing community service for similar crimes of physical assault. Harmony is the one credible character in the film, one who could conceivably...
