Rising star Idris Elba seems to be the man of the moment. Last week it was announced he would be joining the cast of Marvel’s Thor, then the first photos of his action movie The Losers were made public, and now the concept posters for his upcoming film Legacy have made their way online.
The film’s official Twitter page have released three concept posters which appear to be something of a rarity as they are not simply airbrushed photographs or photoshopped floating heads on a black background, but rather actual artistic posters.
Idris Elba not only stars in Legacy but is the film’s executive producer. Written and directed by young British Nigerian filmmaker Thomas Ikimi, Legacy co-stars Eamonn Walker (Lord of War), Monique Gabriela Curnen (The Dark Knight), Richard Brake (Batman Begins), and Clarke Peters (The Wire).

Is it fair to compare a young, second time film maker with one of cinema's all time greats? No, of course it's not. But if Thomas Ikimi's ultra low budget debut Limbo wasn't enough to convince you that he has aspersions towards making the same sort of high concept thrillers that made Hitchcock famous, well, a quartet of concept posters for his sophomore effort are here to make that point clear. Titled Legacy, the film stars The Wire's Idris Elba in the lead and the just-released poster art has that classic Saul Bass influence all over it.
Here's the press release that went out went we first covered the film back in May:
Black Camel Pictures are delighted to announce that on May 11th 2009 they began principal photography on their new Us set psychological thriller Legacy starring Idris Elba (Obsessed, The Wire) who also Executive Produces. Legacy was »

As a television show, Kings was grandiose. It was more akin to a 12 episode feature film than a scripted drama. After all, how many other shows could have created a universe with so much depth in only half of a season?
Unfortunately, Kings couldn't find a large enough audience. Perhaps because it was too different. Perhaps because the language (a mixture of modern speech and Shakespearean language) was confusing. The cancellation of the series was unfortunate, because I don't know the next time we'll see a show filled with so many talented actors and rich storylines.
Fortunately, NBC Universal has put out the complete series on DVD and if you were a fan of this show, you should buy this set.
Kings was originally billed as a modern-day David and Goliath story. As a matter of fact, one of its main characters was named David Shepherd (Chris Egan). David is »

There aren’t many good movies involving the Iraq war. Though most are well-intentioned, The Messenger is only the second well-made one. Having death messengers as its characters, it powerfully deals with loss, grief and the disillusionment of patriotism.
Ben Foster and Woody Harrelson are perfect in their roles. Presenting scene after scene of wailing parents, the film helps us understand how one eventually get used to war casualty, and how maddening that is.
This is a capsule review from the film festival. We will have a full review when the film opens on November 13.

Even if you don’t follow Mixed Martial Arts or Mma-themed movies, you’ve seen the big body, crazy hair and menacing face of Kimbo Slice. He’s popped into popular culture as a Mr. T lookalike, contestant on Ufc Ultimate Fighter reality show, computer protection commercials and more since surfacing as a street fighter in YouTube videos.
Like many Mma fighters, he’s also breaking into acting. Nothing too serious but with his natural charisma which has captivated fans beyond his record in the ring, he’s bound to keep on punching his way to more roles.

Let’s be clear – Blood and Bone is an above average Mma beat-em-up flick. But since that’s a genre that right now encompasses a whopping six, perhaps even seven films, that’s not really saying much. Blood and Bone is the kind of film where characters say lines like: "You had my friend Johnny murdered in prison, after you sent him there for a crime he didn’t commit.”; where illegal bare knuckle brawls take place in inner-city parking lots close to busy intersections; where groups of heavy set gentlemen covered in ink and decked out in bling swagger around wearing sunglasses at night.
Into this neon drenched arena steps Bone (Michael Jai White of Spawn fame, also producing), a stoically badass fighter freshly released from prison and on a mission to avenge his friend’s death and rescue his loved ones from under the boot of local kingpin James (Eamonn Walker, »

Under the reign of Ben Silverman, NBC spent a whole lot of money on Kings -- about $4 million an episode. Unfortunately for the peacock network, most viewers weren't interested and the network lost a lot of money.
After three weeks of low ratings, they shuffled the series off to die on Saturday evenings, when viewership is typically lower anyway. While many devoted fans tuned in each week to watch actors like Ian McShane, Christopher Egan, Allison Miller, Susanna Thompson, Sebastian Stan, Eamonn Walker, and Dylan Baker, the numbers weren't enough for the show to go back into production.
Not only won't Kings be returning for a second season but NBC isn't planning on taking that kind of ambitious risk again. The network's President of Primetime Entertainment, Angela Bromstad, said this week, "It was a great production, but our challenge now is, you need to sell something. People want to know what something is about. »

The network had high hopes for Kings, a series based on the Biblical tale of King David. With a large cast of actors like Ian McShane, Christopher Egan, Allison Miller, Susanna Thompson, Sebastian Stan, Eamonn Walker, and Dylan Baker, NBC reportedly spent $10 million on the two-hour debut and $4 million on subsequent episodes.
Unfortunately, Kings failed to attract many viewers for its debut on Sunday, March 15th. The premiere attracted an average of just 6.08 million viewers and a 1.6/4 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic.
After two more weeks of dismal and declining ratings on Sundays, NBC shuffled the series off to Saturday nights. Understandably, viewership continued to fall and the airings averaged well under two million viewers.
While the series found a devoted group of viewers, the numbers certainly weren't enough to warrant a sophomore season. Sadly, the series finale only leaves loyal watchers wanting more. For those that missed it, »

We first became aware of writer-director Thomas Ikimi a couple years back when fueled by passion, credit cards and stacks of raw talent he burst on to the scene with Limbo, a purely independent psychological thriller that marked Ikimi as a fairly significant new talent to keep an eye on and prompted me to wonder openly just what the man would be capable if he had access to a seasoned crew and stable of experienced actors. Well, we’re about to find out since Ikimi is now in principal photography on his new feature, Legacy, which stars and is executive produced by The Wire‘s Idris Elba who is quickly carving out a niche for himself as one of the most talented and reliable character players going.

Cementing their reputation for scooping up beloved cancelled series, DirecTV has announced that they're going to be airing two more; Deadwood and Oz.
Deadwood is centered around an outlaw camp in the Old West. The HBO series was nominated for 22 Emmy Awards and won seven in its all too-brief 36 episode, three season run. The drama showcases the talents of thespians like Timothy Olyphant, Ian McShane, Molly Parker, Brad Dourif, W. Earl Brown, John Hawkes, Paula Malcomson, Dayton Callie, Leon Rippy, William Sanderson, Robin Weigert, Sean Bridgers, and Bree Seanna Wall. HBO committed to produce a pair of movies to wrap up the series but they never materialized.
Oz gives viewers a look into the harsh and often horrific world of the Oswald State Correctional Facility. The series ran for six seasons and 56 episodes on HBO. The large cast includes Kirk Acevedo, Ernie Hudson, Terry Kinney, Rita Moreno, Harold Perrineau, J.K. Simmons, »

Though NBC had high hopes for its ambitious Kings drama, the series has just not lived up to expectations. You know things are bad when a network ships a series off to Saturday nights. You know things are incredibly bad when the networks pull them from Saturday nights!
Kings revolves around the fictional nation of Gilboa, a United States-like country except that it's ruled by a king, Silas Benjamin (Ian McShane). Based on the biblical tale of King David, the series features the talents of Christopher Egan, Susanna Thompson, Michael Patrick Crane, Allison Miller, Sebastian Stan, Eamonn Walker, Dylan Baker, Wes Studi, Joel Garland, Jason Antoon, Sarita Choudhury, and Macaulay Culkin.
After a lackluster premiere and poor subsequent showings, the peacock network decided to send the drama off to Saturday nights, the least-watched evening for network television. Last Saturday night, April 18th, was the first airing. It attracted a dismal »

NBC’s latest drama, Kings, received early critical praise but has failed to find its audience. The network previously announced that the series would be moving to the ‘dreaded’ Saturday timeslot, but now it’s been pulled from the scheduled altogether. Kings is a contemporary re-telling of the timeless tale of David and Goliath. This series is an epic story of greed and power, war and romance, forbidden loves and secret alliances -- and a young hero who rises to power in a modern-day kingdom. It was created by Michael Green. The remaining episodes of Kings will now air on Saturdays at 8 p.m. from June 13 to July 25. While an official announcement hasn’t been made yet, all signs suggest that Kings won’t be returning for a second season. In the meantime, NBC will now air repeats of Law & Order: Svu at 8 p.m., followed by repeats of Southland at 9 p. »

As we predicted a few weeks ago, immediately following Kings' less-than-stellar premiere, NBC has pulled the ambitious drama from its Sunday night timeslot.
Kings focuses on the fictional nation of Gilboa, a country that is very similar to our United States except that it's ruled by a king, Silas Benjamin (Ian McShane). Based on the biblical tale of King David, the series features the talents of Christopher Egan, Susanna Thompson, Michael Patrick Crane, Allison Miller, Sebastian Stan, Eamonn Walker, Dylan Baker, Wes Studi, Joel Garland, Jason Antoon, Sarita Choudhury, and Macaulay Culkin.
The TV show's two-hour premiere ratings failed to impress anyone with a fourth place showing of just 6.47 million viewers and a 1.6/4 rating/share in the desirable 18-49 demographic. The following week's ratings were even worse with 4.62 million viewers and a 1.3/3 in the demo. Episode five, which aired on Sunday night, could only muster 3.64 million viewers and a »

Last night was the premiere of NBC's much-hyped new series, Kings. Though the series has an impressive cast and big production values, few viewers tuned in to watch. Based on the initial ratings, will interested viewers get a chance to see the whole season?
Kings is a modern retelling of the classic David and Goliath story. It's set in a modern world that closely resembles our own, except for the fact that what looks like the United States is ruled by a king. Kings is billed as an epic story of greed and power, war and romance, forbidden loves and secret alliances -- and a young hero who rises to power in a modern-day kingdom.
It stars Ian McShane, Christopher Egan, Susanna Thompson, Michael Patrick Crane, Allison Miller, Sebastian Stan, Eamonn Walker, Dylan Baker, Wes Studi, Joel Garland, Jason Antoon, Sarita Choudhury, and Macaulay Culkin.

Television Rating: 3.5/5.0 Chicago – You won’t see many shows much more ambitious than NBC’s “Kings”. The multi-character drama borrows from the story of King David to create a tapestry piece about power, corruption, and war. It’s dense, layered, complex storytelling that you rarely see on network television. In other words, I don’t think it’s going to be on very long.
“We give up what we want when we want power.” - King Silas Benjamin (Ian McShane, “Deadwood”)
In the two-hour premiere of “Kings,” directed by “I Am Legend“‘s Francis Lawrence (as are all of the first four hours) and created by “Heroes”’ Michael Green, we meet the popular King of Gilboa, Silas Benjamin, played with driven perfection by the great Ian McShane. His people have recently emerged stronger from a horrible war and the King lives with his Queen Rose (Susanna Thompson of “Once and »

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0 Chicago – There’s a lot to like about the individual parts of “Cadillac Records,” now on Blu-Ray, but they never come together to form a cohesive sum. A frustratingly episodic film, “Records” crams too many stories into one movie, ending up more like a greatest hits album than a creative vision of its very own.
If each individual story in “Cadillac Records” causes young viewers to go back and learn more about the early days of rock and roll and the music of Etta James, Chuck Berry, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, and Little Walter than the film will have done some good, but I’ll never understand the logic of trying to shove all their stories into a film under two hours long.
Cadillac Records was released on Blu-Ray on March 10th, 2009.
