Few followers of cinema could dispute the influence of Francis Ford Coppola, the director of such cinematic masterworks as The Godfather and Apocalypse Now. But when Eleanor Coppola, who sadly passed away yesterday, set her camera on the action behind the scenes of Apocalypse Now, she would lay the foundation for a film that I believe has had just as much impact on the landscape of cinema in the 30+ years since its release. If Francis’s influence is bold and loud, Eleanor’s is quiet and subtle, but it is no less powerful.
Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse, which was released in 1991 and was also directed by Fax Bahr and the late George Hickenlooper, has taught generations of aspiring filmmakers to trust in a process that at times can feel fraught and doomed to peril. For the truth is that every film production is its own journey up the river.

Eleanor Coppola, Emmy-Winning Director of ‘Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse,’ Dies at 87
Eleanor Coppola, the matriarch of a Hollywood dynasty who won an Emmy for directing the documentary Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse and helmed her first narrative feature at age 80, died Friday. She was 87.
Coppola died at her home in Rutherford, California, her family said in a statement to the Associated Press.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, five-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, 85; their daughter, Sofia Coppola, the director, producer and Oscar-winning screenwriter; and their son, Roman Coppola, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter.
Her oldest child, actor Gian-Carlo Coppola, died in 1986 at age 22 in a speedboat accident.
Eleanor Coppola often went on location with Francis, and during the making of his Vietnam War epic Apocalypse Now (1979), she was in the Philippines to shoot footage with a 16mm camera and conduct interviews, material that supposedly was to be used by the United Artists publicity department.
It would all be seen in Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse.

Eleanor Coppola, who won an Emmy for the Apocalypse Now documentary Hearts of Darkness, directed Paris Can Wait and Love Is Love Is Love and was married to Francis Ford Coppola for 61 years, died Friday at her home in Rutherford, CA. She was 87.
She also is the mother of Oscar-winning filmmaker Sofia Coppola and American Zoetrope president Roman Coppola.
Eleanor Coppola won an Emmy and a DGA Award for helming Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse, the 1991 documentary about the making of her husband’s seminal Vietnam War movie Apocalypse Now. The production of that 1979 classic – which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar – was plagued by problems related to budget, casting, script, the weather – a typhoon destroyed much of the set – and even an active insurgency in the Philippines, the battle with which pulled away helicopters on loan from the government.

Eleanor Coppola, an American filmmaker who won an Emmy for chronicling her husband Francis Ford Coppola’s taxing 238-day production of “Apocalypse Now” in her documentary “Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse,” died Friday at her home in Rutherford, Calif. She was 87.
Coppola’s death was confirmed in a statement by the Coppola family to the Associated Press.
A lifelong creative partner to her husband Francis, Eleanor Coppola took up filmmaking during the production of his Vietnam war feature “Apocalypse Now.” A highly anticipated follow-up to “The Godfather: Part II,” the planned five-month Philippines shoot more than doubled in length due to a litany of headaches and complications, including initial star Harvey Keitel’s replacement with Martin Sheen, typhoons wrecking sets, a reworked ending and Sheen’s hospitalization due to a heart attack.

Woody Allen On Cancel Culture: “I Find That All So Silly. I Don’t Know What It Means To Be Canceled”
While promoting his 50th – and quite possibly, last — movie Coup de Chance at the Venice Film Festival, Woody Allen weighed in on cancel culture, the #MeToo Movement, and whether any woman has ever complained about his behavior on set.
“I said years ago that I should have been a poster boy [for the #MeToo movement] and they got all excited about that,” Allen, 87, told Variety in an interview before Sunday’s premiere of the French language film that he wrote and directed. “I’ve made 50 films. I’ve always had very good parts for women, always had women in the crew, always paid them the exact same amount that we paid men, worked with hundreds of actresses, and never, ever had a single complaint from any of them at any point. Not a single one ever said, ‘Working with him, he was mean or he was harassing.’ That’s just not been an issue.

Woody Allen’s Coup de Chance premiered at the Venice Film Festival on Monday. The film, which was directed and written by Allen himself, received a five-minute ovation from the audience.
Coup de Chance centers around Fanny and Jean who look like the ideal married couple—they’re both professionally accomplished, they live in a gorgeous apartment in an exclusive neighborhood of Paris, and they seem to be in love just as much as they were when they first met. But when Fanny accidentally bumps into Alain, a former high school classmate, she’s swept off her feet. They soon see each other again and get closer and closer.

The 50th movie from controversial filmmaker Woody Allen is a thriller that was shot in French and will be making its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, which is set to run from August 30th through September 9th. The film is called Coup de Chance (or Stroke of Luck), and an English-subtitled trailer can be seen in the embed above.
Allen has described Coup de Chance as a “poisonous romantic thriller” and spiritual successor to his popular 2005 psychological thriller Match Point. This one has the following synopsis: Fanny and Jean have everything of the ideal couple: fulfilled in their professional life, they live in a magnificent apartment in the beautiful districts of Paris and seem to be in love as on the first day. But when Fanny crosses, by chance, Alain, a former high school friend, she is immediately capsized. They see each other again very quickly and get closer and closer.

I did not successfully lobby for Woody Allen Summer Project 2022 placing on our list of most-anticipated 2023 films. Rather than get into any reasoning for or arguments against the artist’s exile, we might all focus on the art: yet another work about somebody committing a horrible crime and finding small moral struggle with their decision.
I jest, though Allen’s hyped his next as a “poisonous romantic thriller” with explicit reference to Match Point, and today it’s known the picture––his first French-language production, titled Coup de Chance (Stroke of Luck en Anglais)––will make some appearance at the Berlinale’s EFM this month. Attached to the news is a first still featuring stars Lou De Laâge and Niels Schneider, the explicit reference to Coup as a policier (à la Le Cercle Rouge or Touchez pas au grisbi), and this small summary from the director:

The renewal came in the form of a letter from Emily’s fictional boss, Sylvie Grateau (see below).
In Emily In Paris, Emily (Collins), an ambitious twentysomething marketing executive from Chicago, unexpectedly lands her dream job in Paris when her company acquires a French luxury marketing company — and she is tasked with revamping its social media strategy. Emily’s new life in Paris is filled with intoxicating adventures and surprising challenges as she juggles winning over her work colleagues, making friends and navigating new romances.

The long road to the screen for Emily in Paris is almost over.
Netflix on Wednesday dropped a new trailer for the series, and it gave us our first glimpse at Emily's work life, as well as her relationships.
What is evident from the clip is that Emily is highly opinionated and is not afraid to speak her mind, which seeming rubs her co-workers the wrong way.
Whether she will be able to make it work in Paris is up for debate, especially when she is branded dramatic.
Emily also seems to be in a complicated relationship with her hot neighbor, and we're not complaining.

Netflix dropped the trailer for “Emily in Paris,” its upcoming 10-episode rom-com series starring Lily Collins as that titular American who is trying to figure out her place in the City of Love. It doesn’t come so naturally for Emily who describes herself as “the girl who shows up, not the girl who makes bad decisions” after getting herself involved with a sexy Parisian guy who has a girlfriend.
However, he uses his charms to try and get Emily to accept that “you don’t come to Paris to be good.” Meanwhile, Emily is busy at work trying to teach her new superiors the difference between “sexy” and “sexist” after being transferred to the foreign office.

The upcoming Paramount Network comedy series “Emily in Paris” is headed to Netflix.
Variety has learned that the series will debut exclusively on Netflix this fall rather than the basic cabler. The series is created by and executive produced by Darren Star with Lily Collins starring as the titular Emily in addition to producing.
“Emily in Paris” was one of few scripted series set to air on Paramount Network in the near future. The network’s only current scripted original is “Yellowstone,” which debuted its third season back in June with a fourth already ordered. Earlier this year, Paramount Network aired the Afghanistan war dramedy “68 Whiskey,” which is still awaiting word on a second season. The network is also expected to air the Michael Chiklis-led drama “Coyote” this year, though no premiere date has been set at the time of this publishing.

It’s official — the new romantic comedy series Emily In Paris — created, written and executive produced by Darren Star — has landed at Netflix. The half-hour series, originally developed and greenlighted by Paramount Network, will be released exclusively on the streaming service this fall. It is produced by MTV Studios.
The move had been in the works for several months and was in its final stages when ViacomCBS’ Entertainment & Youth Group last week announced an overall deal with Star. The Entertainment & Youth Group includes Paramount Network, MTV Studios as well as TV Land, which airs Star’s popular comedy series Younger.
Emily In Paris, starring and produced by Lily Collins, was ordered in fall 2018 as an anchor of a planned female-themed dramedy night on Paramount Network that the comedy was to share with Younger and First Wives Club. The idea was shelved a few months later when a decision was made...

Can’t afford to pack your bags and embark on a vacation adventure in an exotic foreign land? No problem, just travel vicariously at the multiplex. Many different genre films have more than a bit of “travelogue” in them (one of the staples of “golden age” moviegoing was the double feature with several short subjects: cartoons, newsreels, comedy “two-reelers”, and the travelogue, sandwiched between the main films). One type of story often set in “faraway places’ is the “rom-com”. Oh, and a frequent star of such flicks is this film’s leading lady, Diane Lane (Under The Tuscan Sun, Nights In Rodanthe). Yes, we’re talking about Superman’s Earth mum (we’ll see her again in the role soon in Justice League). These stories and many other recent Lane films concern her character re-discovering love and desire, usually after a long-standing relationship has gone “phhfft”. Now she’s on...

Chicago – The cache of “Paris Can Wait” is what immediately makes it attractive. It’s Diane Lane road tripping through France on the way to Paris, guided by the script and direction of Eleanor Coppola, in her narrative film debut (at age 80!). Along the way there is food, seduction, incredible sights and Alec Baldwin. That formula was destined to work.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Lane is the wife of a famous filmmaker in the story, which sounds strangely familiar. This is autobiographical, a trip like this actually happened to Coppola, not in the same fashion, but with the same atmosphere. By creating a scenario of seduction and high level food, the question of will-she-won’t-see becomes apparent beyond the cliché level. Diane Lane is simply wonderful in the role, knowing just how to balance it. Lane is one of those performers that observers tend to take for granted, because even with less than stellar material,...

Alec Baldwin doesn’t get much screen time in “Paris Can Wait,” and that’s one reason the movie works. Nothing against the “SNL” hero; the character he plays is, like himself, a successful Hollywood insider. Director Eleanor Coppola is more concerned with the workaday dramas that happen backstage at an awards show, or just out of frame of a paparazzi shot. As the wife of Francis Ford and mother of Sofia, Coppola sticks to what she knows in her narrative feature debut. For the 80-year-old filmmaker (“Hearts of Darkness”), it’s a triumph worth saluting.

“Francis feels very frustrated,” wrote Eleanor Coppola in Notes: The Making of Apocalypse Now. “He gathers up his Oscars and throws them out the window. The children pick up the pieces in the back yard. Four of the five are broken.” The shoot for Francis Ford Coppola’s Vietnam epic had yet to even begin—the director was still trying to cast the key roles of Willard and Kurtz. Steve McQueen, Al Pacino, Jimmy Caan, Robert Redford and even Marlon Brando had all turned him down. Their reasons bounced between keeping kids in school, fears about getting sick in the Philippines and, of course, money. This is just the start of a book crafted from Eleanor Coppola’s three-year diaries kept during production on Apocalypse Now.

If you’re longing for a delicious romantic romp to take your mind off the world going to hell in hand basket, Paris Can Wait is it. Eleanor Coppola, best known for putting together and narrating the landmark 1991 documentary, Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse (about the torments suffered by her husband Francis Ford Coppola during the filming of Apocalypse Now) makes her non-doc directing debut with this delightful surprise package. Professional groove reclaimant Diane Lane is at it again. After decamping for Tuscany and falling out and in love with Richard Gere, Lane rejoins her exploration of life’s many paths toward revitalization in Paris Can Wait, which imagines the process as something very much like tourism. Anne (Lane) is in Cannes with her husband, Michael (Alec Baldwin), a film producer, and when they’re about to fly to Budapest via private jet, Anne is grounded because of a bad earache, a condition that the semi-neglectful Michael has failed to register (and one that, somewhat awkwardly, a member of the flight crew notices and diagnoses within 30 seconds of meeting her). Michael’s associate Jacques (Arnaud Viard) volunteers to drive Anne to Paris, where she and Michael will meet in a few days.

"Let's pretend we don't know where we are going, or even who we are." Sony Pictures Classics is releasing this indie drama in theaters this May, so we're featuring the trailer before the summer movie season kicks off. Paris Can Wait is the feature directorial debut of Eleanor Coppola, Francis Ford Coppola's wife, now making her debut at the age of 81. Diane Lane stars as a woman married to a Hollywood producer who, after a visit to Cannes, takes a long road trip through France with one of her husband's business partners. Alec Baldwin stars as her producer husband, and Arnaud Viard plays the man she goes on the road trip with. Along the way, she finds happiness and a love for life again in everything from the food to the sights and the conversations. This looks like a light, charming film to remind you how great it is to see the world.

The Beguiled won’t be the only film we’ll be getting from the Coppola family this summer. A new trailer has arrived for Paris Can Wait, the narrative directorial debut of Eleanor Coppola, wife of Francis Ford Coppola and mother of Sofia Coppola. The film, which premiered at Tiff last year, follows Anne (Diane Lane) who, at a crossroads in her life, finds herself on the winding roads of life between Cannes and Paris. Along the way, romance, fun, and good food cause Anne to realize that life can be quite delicious.
We said in our review, “After exploring the insanity and depression that went into her husband making Apocalypse Now with Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse, here Coppola seems to revel in playing it light, while also making what is seemingly a very personal film. She ends up being the perfect fit for Lane and Viard’s onscreen playfulness,...

Sony Pictures Classics has released the new trailer and poster for Paris Can Wait, written and directed by Eleanor Coppola, and starring Diane Lane, Araud Viard, and Alec Baldwin. The film opens in select theaters May 12th.
Eleanor Coppola’s feature film directorial and screenwriting debut at the age of 81 stars Academy Award nominee Diane Lane as a Hollywood producer’s wife who unexpectedly takes a trip through France, which reawakens her sense of self and her joie de vivre.
Anne (Lane) is at a crossroads in her life. Long married to a successfully driven but inattentive movie producer (Alec Baldwin), she finds herself taking a car trip from Cannes to Paris with a business associate of her husband (Arnaud Viard).
What should be a seven-hour drive turns into a journey of discovery involving fine food and wine, humor, wisdom, and picturesque sights.

Irène Jacob Cuts Deep
By Alex Simon
French-Swiss actress Irène Jacob cemented her status as one of her generation’s greatest talents through her work with legendary Polish director Krzysztof Kieślowski: The Double Life of Veronique (1991, for which she was awarded Best Actress at Cannes) and the final chapter of his Three Colors Trilogy, Red (1994).
Jacob comes from an accomplished family: her father Maurice was a renowned French physicist, her mother a successful psychotherapist, and her three brothers are composed of two scientists and a musician. After making her film debut in Louis Malle’s Au Revoir Les Enfants in 1987, Jacob has literally not stopped working. Her latest film, written and directed by her co-star Arnaud Viard, is Paris Love Cut, Viard’s semi-autobiographical tale of a filmmaker trying to balance his personal life, career and sanity in an increasingly shifting landscape. Jacob is delightful as Viard’s very patient (and very pregnant) fiancée.

The 5th Annual Key West Film Festival has announced its official 2016 lineup, including the opening night film, “20th Century Women,” directed by Mike Mills and starring Annette Bening, Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig and Billy Crudup. As part of the festival’s signature Critics Focus program, MTV’s Chief Film Critic Amy Nicholson will present and lead a conversation around the film, alongside David Fear, Senior Film/TV Editor of Rolling Stone.
Director of Programming Michael Tuckman said of Nicholson’s pick, “I could not be more thrilled with Amy Nicholson’s choice of ’20th Century Women’ to kick off our 5th Anniversary edition of festival. Annette Bening’s performance is Oscar-deserving and the rich depth of the balance of the leading cast is Altman-esque in its quality. Amy’s discussion after the film will bring a cunning critic’s eye to this fabulous film for audiences.”
