Top 10 flops of the 00's

30 November 2009 | Cineman.ch/en | See recent Cineman.ch/en news »

With the decade coming to a close at the end of the year, it's time to take stock. Here is a list of the biggest financial flops of 2000's first decade. #10: 2008's "The Spirit". With a price tag of $60 million, graphic novelist Frank Miller's movie took in barely a third of that, despite a fabulous cast that included Eva Mendes, Scarlett Johansson and Spain's Paz Vega. #9: The ambitious but too-pointed 1970¹s B-movie homage "Grindhouse". The movie made only $25 million but cost $67 million, which tainted maker Quentin Tarantino a loser in 2007. Meanwhile, America's enfant terrible has redeemed himself with "Inglourious Basterds". #9: The remake of the 1970's classic, "Rollerball", released in 2002. $70 million price tag, $19 million in sales. The failure seems to have tanked the career of formerly success director John McTiernan, who later got 4 months for lying to the FBI in the Anthony Pellicano affair. #7: "The Invasion »

28 September 2009 12:10 PM, PDT | IrishCentral | See recent IrishCentral news »

Colin Farrell’s new movie “Triage” will open this year’s Rome International Film Festival (Riff) on October 15. The Irish actor and his co-star, Spanish actress Paz Vega, are scheduled to attend the festival’s opening night gala at what will be their film’s European premiere. “Triage” premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, where Farrell now infamously attacked a photographer for yelling at his sister on the red carpet. “Triage,” from Bosnian filmmaker Danis Tanovic, stars Farrell as a war photojournalist suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome. The photographer returns to Ireland to discover that his best friend has failed to come home. Most of the film was shot in Dublin. “Triage” will kick off the fourth annual Riff, which will feature 12 films in competition. Farrell’s flick will be up against “The Last Station,” starring Helen Mirren and James McAvoy, and “Up in the Air,” starring George Clooney. The »

Triage Review: Should I Quit My Job to Become a War Reporter?

13 September 2009 7:37 PM, PDT | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

Watching Triage made this lily-livered film writer want to both be a war reporter and never, ever be a war reporter. Set in 1988, the film stars Colin Farrell as Mark Walsh, an Irish photojournalist who returns from an especially hairy assignment on the front lines of the Kurd-Iraqi conflict with scars both physical and psychological. The title refers to the process by which the gravely wounded are sorted on the battlefield, where medical equipment is minimal and caves double for emergency rooms. When the film opens, Mark and his colleague, David (Jamie Sives), are photographing a Kurdish doctor (an excellent Branko Djuric) as he places colored tickets on bedridden victims. Yellow means the casualty is salvageable. Blue means it is not. Mark gets squeamishly close to the action, capturing the patients' torment, and clicking away as the doctor euthanizes the terminally injured with the aid of a handgun. David, meanwhile, »

Whiteout and Not Forgotten (Film Reviews)

10 September 2009 9:16 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Despite minor genre trappings sprinkled throughout both, neither Whiteout (opening nationwide September 11) nor Not Forgotten (beginning a New York City engagement on the 11th ahead of a DVD release November 3) is really a horror film. That hasn’t stopped Warner Bros. from trying to sell Whiteout like one, though what they’re pitching as a literal chiller about a malevolent presence terrorizing an South Pole research station turns out to be a mystery/suspense drama without mystery, suspense or drama.

Kate Beckinsale trades in her Underworld leather garb for a parka to play U.S. Marshal Carrie Stetko, who’s about to wrap up a stint on Antarctica (which the film helpfully reminds us is “the coldest, most isolated land mass on the planet”). Within the film’s first eight minutes, she and the filmmakers demonstrate that they’ve remembered her fans via a lengthy shower scene, but she has »

“It doubles, it triples. It’s inexhaustible and inexplicable.”

Like most moms, Paz says she often finds herself wondering how she “ever lived” before welcoming her daughter and son. “In homes with children, there is light,” she notes. As for Ava’s delivery, which required a c-section due to transverse positioning, Paz recalls,

“I remember, more than anything, the moment I heard her cry and I knew that she was alive and breathing. In that moment, you feel a great sense of peace and relief.”

Paz Vega in the Human Contract Trailer, DVD Release Date

18 May 2009 10:19 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Paz Vega is a major star in Spain, but she’s never really caught on in the States despite being in a number of Hollywood films as the female lead. Unfortunately her latest movie, “Human Contract” isn’t going to help in that regard, because the film is going straight to DVD June 30 courtesy of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The film is a pretty spicy little drama, because let’s face it, when you think Jada Pinkett Smith, you think spicy little dramas. Okay, maybe not so much, but the trailer sure sells the sex pretty hard. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. The film is Rated R, so one supposes there will be follow-through with all the teasing. A highly successful but personally tortured ad businessman (Jason Clarke) has his life turned upside down after meeting a free-spirited, mysterious beauty (Paz Vega), who tempts him to explore reckless love Starring Jason Clarke, »

Movie Review - 'Not Forgotten'

15 May 2009 1:40 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Not Forgotten

Starring Simon Baker, Paz Vega, and Chloe Moretz

Directed by Dror Soref

Rated R

Sometimes you just throw your hands up and hope that the movie fell apart for all the right reasons. By that I mean that the story on screen really isn't the script the cast agreed to, and that the financing fell apart in the middle of production, causing certain sacrifices to be made that otherwise would clear up this whole mess.

But a movie should never have to explain itself afterward. That's why you give it two hours of your time to make its case.

Not Forgotten makes sense at the beginning, but it's a slow and steady decline after that. And this is why you hope that the real screenplay - the only that wasn't filmed for whatever reason - had more on the ball; you'd hate to come to terms with the »

Manly Casting Bites: A Huston God and Mr. Big

29 April 2009 6:45 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Fie Louis Leterrier, and all of the people behind the Clash of the Titans remake! I have to admit, Liam Neeson as Zeus and Ralph Fiennes as Hades tempted my curiosity, and now I can't help but see it. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Danny Huston is the next man of the Titans, and he will play Poseidon -- God of the Sea. Leterrier only knows how much this will mean for the actor, since this so-called remake is switching up the story left, right, and center. Maybe this time around, we'll see the old guy get sexy with Medusa. Whatever the case, this is one more big flick for Huston, and maybe one day we'll get some solid starring work, and a North American release for Fade to Black while we're at it. (What's Fade to Black? Why, it's the film where he stars as Orson Welles. A project that also boasts Paz Vega, »

Blu-Ray Review: ‘The Spirit’ Deserves Another Chance at Life in HD

16 April 2009 4:19 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Frank Miller’s “The Spirit” is far-from-perfect. The attempts at goofy humor fall flat, the script is wildly uneven, and Gabriel Macht is deadly dull in the title role, but there’s way more to like here than I expected after missing it in theaters and hearing all the horrendous buzz from its initial release. It may not be great, but “The Spirit” could surprise you too. It’s a mess, but it’s kind of a beautiful mess, especially in HD.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0 What do I like about Frank Miller’s take on the classic Will Eisner comic? It’s unapologetic. I always appreciate filmmakers willing to stick to their creative vision and there’s no denying that aspect of “The Spirit”. Miller is a visually intriguing director and “The Spirit” is just fun to watch in 1080P and with the incredibly low expectations I had going into it. »

Cuba Gooding Jr. is the Last Post-Apocalyptic Warrior

30 March 2009 7:29 AM, PDT | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

Snicker at the idea of Cuba Gooding Jr. playing a genetically altered super warrior in a post-apocalyptic wasteland if you will, but I think he could pull it off. Hey, he’s no Denzel Washington and this is no “Book of Eli”, but Gooding Jr. has proven himself more than capable of action movie heroics before, and I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt on this one. In a war-ravaged and disease-ridden future, a genetically altered killing machine escapes impending destruction and goes on the run, leaving a trail of destruction in his wake. According to Cinema Blend, the movie was originally supposed to star Laurence Fishburne, who has since been replaced by Gooding Jr. The film, according to IMDb.com, will co-star Spanish beauty Paz Vega, and Olivier Martinez and Vincent Perez are “rumored” for roles. I don’t know what “rumored” means, though, since IMDb.com »
