Of course, some historical dramas attempt to portray events and people as accurately as possible, while others are very much fictionalized. - - -

- - - Some highly anticipated period flicks such as Bright Star, Coco Before Chanel and Inglourious Basterds have been shown already, so what other movies will be shown next?

Here's our first batch of 10 most-anticipated historical flicks, right after the jump!

Welcome to the Wild Card Oscars

12 October 2009 11:42 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Every year, critics come up with their lists of the top ten films of the past 12 months. Ideally an eclectic mix of arthouse fare, Hollywood auteurs and the occasional wild card (say, last year's appearance of Ben Stiller's "Tropic Thunder"), these decalogues of cinephilia tend to be capricious, political and painstakingly strategized for maximum effect, not to mention their impact on the final results of consensus-building critics' polls.

Now think of that power in the hands of the more than 6,000 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences as they choose this year's ten Best Picture nominees, and watch the chaos unfold. The expansion from five to ten nominees isn't the only major game-changer -- there's also the switch back to instant runoff voting, in which the films must be ranked in order of preference, to keep in mind. Imagine the wide expanse of options this year's voters »

Toronto 2009: The Feminine Mystique

22 September 2009 8:42 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

It seemed appropriate that "The Young Victoria" closed out Toronto this year, considering that the festival turned out to be a coronation for women in film, in addition to being a celebration its host metropolis (a series of pre-screening clips from Toronto-based films honored the city's 175th anniversary). Besides showcasing upcoming femme-centric fall releases as "Bright Star," "An Education," "Whip It!" and "Fish Tank," the festival ended up bestowing audience awards upon the coming-of-age drama "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire" and the doc "The Topp Twins," which focuses on a pair of lesbian sisters and musicians who have been entertaining New Zealand for the past three decades. (A full list of winners can be found here.)

The best and the worst thing that can be said about "The Young Victoria" is that it left me wanting more. During a brisk 96 minutes, we witness the rise of Queen Victoria »

Tiff: Quebecer does more than Dramedy

17 September 2009 9:06 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

MattCanada reporting from the Toronto International Film Festival

Two nights ago I saw J'ai tué ma mère (I Killed My Mother), the Cannes hit from 20 year old Québécois director Xavier Dolan. The film was shown in the University of Toronto's Isabel Bader Theatre, which is hands down my favorite venue for Tiff films. It is like a Frank Gehry version of an Opera House, which always makes me feel like I am about to view a classic in the making. I think for the first time the movie matched up to the theatre's atmosphere. Present at the screening for its North American premiere were director/producer/writer/star Xavier Dolan, the titular mother Anne Dorval, and the shockingly pretty François Arnaud, who plays Dolan's boyfriend. Dolan introduced the film in the most unusual way - by raving about Jacques Audiard's Un prophète, and telling the audience he hopes to »

tMF Oscarwatch: The Young Victoria disappoints...?

30 August 2009 10:59 AM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

Is this Emily Blunt's year? I really hope so... Even though this is also the year fellow British actress Carey Mulligan (via An Education) made her magnificent acting known outside of the UK. So how was Blunt's acting as the young Victoria? Is the movie Oscar-worthy? Is her performance Oscar-worthy? Says Empire:

An elegant, entertaining, informative picture with a gallery of vivid supporting turns, this provisionally crowns the winning Blunt as a Brit-pic star - but it skimps a bit on the bodice-ripping, blood and thunder. - - -

- - - A more generous review from Digital Spy follows:

There's something about donning a Queen's crown that brings out the best in actresses. Cate Blanchett, Helen Mirren and Judi Dench have thrived as monarchs, and now it's the turn of Emily Blunt to take on an iconic British ruler. Blaming her "sly eyes" for constantly being cast as bad girls, »

Scenes We Love: C.R.A.Z.Y.

16 August 2009 9:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

When it comes to the films filled with nostalgia and music, we often look through the catalog composed by Cameron Crowe, epically classic combos like Harold & Maude and The Graduate, or maybe some seventies party fare with Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused. But one name that rarely makes the list, but should, is Jean-Marc Vallée and his 2005 film C.R.A.Z.Y.

Named after Patsy Cline's classic song, and the initials of five sons growing up during the sixties and seventies, C.R.A.Z.Y. follows a young man named Zac, born on Christmas and set to live a rather unique life. His mother is convinced that he's like Jesus and that his touch can heal, his father wants him to become a man's man that makes him proud, and Zac just wants to be happy. In youth, that means things like pushing a baby carriage, and in adolescence, it means being able to »

Top 50 Hottest Young Actresses - Top 10

22 July 2009 10:55 PM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

This is probably the most difficult Top 10 rankings I ever did - more difficult than the updated Top 10 for the actors. I have to find a balance wherein I give proper credit to certain actresses who have already established themselves and are already well-known by fans and ordinary moviegoers vis-a-vis those who have yet to boast of a growing list of followers, but has shown such unforgettable and powerful acting in some very impressive recently released films. At the end of the day, what really matters is that - at this moment - it was her name and her performances that moviegoers and critics alike are talking and raving about. - - -

# 10 - Isild Le Besco: France’s multi-award winning and multi-talented actress Isild le Besco is hot on the heels of Romola Garai in our Top 50 hottest young actresses at #10. Says film critic Marcy Dermansky:
