A photo from Arianna Huffington's Twitter feed is causing a small online stir as the feed claims it's from a film shoot she just did in Chicago with "The Matrix" and "Speed Racer" directors the Wachoskis.
The story? "Iraq from the perspective of the future". Is this a whole new project we've never heard of? Not really. Chud reports that the shoot is part of a few days of camera tests the pair are doing for a new project which is still a while off.
So what is the project? That's unconfirmed though Cinematical speculates that is an adaptation of David Mitchell's 2004 novel "Cloud Atlas" which the pair bought the rights to earlier this year. At last report "The International" and "Run Lola Run" writer/director Tom Tykwer was working on the screenplay. »

Updated: Devin at Chud says these are just tests for the Wachowskis' next project, and they're just shooting a couple of days this month. On top of that Erik Davis at Cinematical points out they have optioned the David Mitchell novel "Cloud Atlas," which FirstShowing.net learned Tom Tykwer was adapting back at the beginning of the year. That novel is comprised of six separate but loosely related narratives that weave together history, science, suspense, humor and pathos, but Tykwer didn't tell the site which of the six stories he was focusing on. There's also no confirmation that is the project they are working on.
Peter at Slash Film was the first to be alerted and sent out an email blast to the rest of us online movie folk that Arianna Huffington of The Huffington Post has updated her Twitter profile with five images from the set of a film she is working on. »

In the months since The International opened to generally dismissive reviews, there have been a few really intriguing hints about future projects from director Tom Tykwer. He's been linked to films based on Cloud Atlas, the postmodern novel by David Mitchell, and What is the What, the Dave Eggers book about the Lost Boys of Sudan. But he's also been quietly filming a new feature called Drei (Three), which wrapped last week. We don't yet know much, but what we've got is after the break. In an article about sales agents The Match Factory dealing with international sales for the film, Screen Daily offers a tiny bit more plot recap than we've previously known. Producer Stefan Arndt says the film "centres on three characters in their mid-40s and the appearance of obsessions one had never imagined existed." Sophie Rois, Devid Striesow and Sebastian Schipper star as the three primaries. »

Clive Owen Gets Back
By
Clive Owen is one of those actors that keep surprising you. Just when you think the audience, and the Hollywood establishment, has pegged him as an action hero, a leading man, or a romantic comedy pin-up, Owen pulls an about-face and does something unexpected.
It all started October 3, 1964 in Coventry, England. Owen’s father, a country music singer, abandoned the family when he was just three. His mother later remarried, with Clive and his four brothers raised by his mother and stepfather, who worked for British Rail. Owen has characterized those early years as "rough." A self-described “solidly working class” kid, Owen was bitten by the acting bug at age 13 and followed his dream to The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art several years later. Initially cutting his teeth on high-profile British television programs such as “Chancer” and “Sharman,” as well as art house »

Roman Polanski's jailing has certainly inspired people to write some of the most insane ramblings I have read in some time. Take for example, Jeff Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere writing the following in his comment section on this post: I didn't say that Polanski deserves a pass from his self-created troubles because he's a great artist, or "Art God." I said and believe that Art Gods have earned the right to be shown an extra measure of consideration when such matters arise. That doesn't mean "give them a pass" -- it means show a little compassion. Basically -- if I'm understanding this correctly -- having unlawful sex with a 13-year-old is not as bad if you directed Chinatown than, say, if you were just an average person. Hopefully you can figure out for yourself how ridiculous I believe such a statement to be, and this goes for everyone, not just Polanski. »

Run Lola Run and Perfume director Tom Tykwer is set to make his first German-language feature in nearly a decade titled Drei (which means Three in German). The film is a comedy-drama centered on a love triangle. Tykwer's last German-language film was The Princess and the Warrior from 2000. Produced by Berlin-based X Filme, Drei is described as a "tragicomic film about love, morality and gender in late modern Germany, set against late modern Berlin backdrops -- a story of a love triangle with social and cultural-philosophical depth." Sounds like it could be a good return to form for Tykwer and a return to homeland. Although I didn't really care for The International, I still love Tykwer, and just think back to Run Lola Run or one of my all-time favorites, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. If anyone also saw Paris Je T'aime, his sequence in that film was »

Once in a while, one has to try something new when it comes to films. Unlike Toronto Stories, which is another anthology movie I'd recommend, Paris, je t'aime uses a rather different approach while showing as much audacity as its Canadian counterpart. All in all, the film is a rather enjoyable gem.
First of all, to put it shortly, Paris, je t'aime uses 18 short segments directed by internationally acclaimed directors. Of course, each segment takes place in a different district of Paris. In each segment, the directors, through their own vision, offer their own interpretation of the meaning of love in none other than the most romantic city in the world.
Obviously, the first praise that you'd like to offer for this film is certainly its photography. Without looking like a postal card, Paris, je t'aime has no difficulty to capture the city's beauty in order to fit it into »

Labor Day weekend is coming up, and it's a holiday that marks the end of the summer movie season along with summer itself. All the kids are heading back to the classroom for another dreaded year of school and (for those in L.A. like myself) the weather starts to cool... hopefully. While fall usually isn't seen as a cinematic hotbed, with the blockbuster summer season over, there are still plenty of quality films to check out at the box office. This year we have Megan Fox's possessed body, a sensational animated film and a new zombie adventure. There's a lot more that I'm looking forward to this fall, so here is a comphrehensive look at what you can expect from this fall movie season.
Starring: Gerard Butler, Kyra Sedgwick, Michael C. Hall, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, John Leguizamo, Amber Valletta, Terry Crews, Logan Lerman, »

"Slumdog Millionaire" isn't finished with its awards collection. Having won many prestigious awards including eight Oscars and four Golden Globes, the Danny Boyle-directed movie is now up for more kudos as World Soundtrack Academy announced on Tuesday, August 18, that it is among the nominees for the 9th World Soundtrack Awards.
From the awards which recognizes art of film music, the rag-to-riches drama collects three nods for composer A. R. Rahman. One is for the category of Best Original Score of the Year in which it will compete with "Burn After Reading" and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" among others. The other two are for a single category, that is Best Original Song Written Directly for a Film.
While it collects the most number of nods for the awards held annually in Ghent, Belgium, "Slumdog" misses out on placing A. R. Rahman on the list of Film Composer of the Year. »

Tokyo! Directed by: Michel Gondry, Leos Carax, Bong Joon-ho Written by: Gabrielle Bell, Michel Gondry, Leos Carax, Bong Joon-ho Starring: Ayako Fujitani, Ayumi Ito, Ryo Kase, Denis Lavant, Jean-François Balmer, Teruyuki Kagawa, Yû Aoi Historically, short films have never really received much mainstream attention because, let's face it, you can't exactly put them in a movie theatre and charge full price for admission. They've mostly been relegated to the realm of film festivals and YouTube, but every now and then someone comes up with a clever way to package a collection of short films and sell it to the public. The 2007 film Paris, Je T'aime had a fairly successful (albeit limited) theatrical run collecting 18 shorts from such directors as The Coen Brothers, Tom Tykwer, Gus Van Sant and Wes Craven. It eventually spawned a sequel of sorts called, New York, I Love You. Following in the footsteps of these films comes Tokyo! »

With Gore Verbinski proudly walking the plank off the $2.6 billion franchise, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is looking for a new captain.
Reportedly, it might be Rob Marshall, the director of Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha, and this year’s upcoming Nine.
Variety reported recently that the choreographer-turned-director was one of “a number of” prospective helmers meeting with Jerry Bruckheimer in Disney is the past few weeks. While nothing has been confirmed just yet, the publication made a note that things must be in motion enough, as the studio is starting to cast new characters for the film. Apparently Bruckheimer and Disney are trying to get things moving so Pirates of the Caribbean 4 can be made with Johnny Depp before the actor stars in The Lone Ranger.
For more information on Pirates 4, check out this earlier article that explores the direction that the franchise is headed.

I need September 21 to hurry up and get here already because that’s when House is coming back to the airwaves, and then I can stop watching the same 10 episodes of Golden Girls I’ve been memorizing all summer long. (Sophia Petrillo is cute and all, but I want to have Olivia Wilde’s kittens.)
As if I needed another reason to get excited, German beauty, Franka Potente will be guest starring in the season’s two-hour premiere.
For those of you who do not know the greatness that is Franka Potente, let me draw your attention to the amazing film, Run Lola Run (Lola Rent). Writer and director Tom Tykwer created the story of Lola, a girl who has 20 minutes to find money for her drug dealer boyfriend or else he’s going to rob a grocery store. Ok, the plot sounds lame; like why doesn’t she dump »

Architect Frank Lloyd Wright was an indisputable American master of his craft: Taliesin, the Robie House, Oak Park, Fallingwater - the list goes on. In New York, Wright's crowning glory is the spirally iconic Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, found at 5th Avenue and 88th Street on Museum Mile. Wright's masterpiece has served as a backdrop in several films, most notably Woody Allen's Manhattan, Barry Sonnenfeld's Men in Black, and Sydney Pollack's Three Days of the Condor. Earlier this year, director Tom Tykwer used the museum to explosive advantage in the Clive Owen/Naomi Watts thriller The International. Since there was a climactic (and massive) shoot-out scene that took place in the museum's swirling atrium, the entire museum had to be rebuilt as a gigantic set. (Check out this behind-the-scenes video about the meticulous, six-week recreation process.) In anticipation of the Guggenheim's 50th birthday - being celebrated this »
