Two news bombs dropped on the world of Smallville this week. First, Pam Grier (The L Word) has been signed to play Amanda Waller On 'Smallville.' If you ever followed the Justice League animated series or the DC Universe, Amanda Waller is Big Brother personified. This may spell trouble for Clark and the Chloe-League (because let's face it, Chloe runs the show), but it should be a great boost in story arc depth on Smallville. Secondly, brace yourselves, Geoff Johns is coming to Smallville. Yes, all you comic savants, the mastermind behind Blackest Night is attacking TV in a 'Super' way. The episodes will feature Stargirl, Hawkman and Dr. Fate. What, no third-smartest man, Mr. Terrific? He always seems to pop up. Aside from Hawkman these may appear to be odd choices overall, but Geoff Johns does pen Justice Society of America, which features the richer more complex, »

• Reality shows swept aside in 'creative renewal'
• Air safety and blitz spirit in explosive new season
First Channel 4 axed Big Brother. Now the broadcaster has brought the curtain down on two more reality shows, Wife Swap and How Clean Is Your House?
Channel 4 said the decision was part of the creative renewal of its schedules, and promised more "audacious and ambitious" programmes including a documentary in which a passenger jet will be crashed as part of a scientific experiment.
The unlikely-sounding TV first, called Plane Crash, was part of the new season unveiled by Channel 4 today. Two former Us navy pilots will parachute from the plane after setting it on autopilot to crash in a desert. In case of system failure, there will be remote controls in a helicopter and on the ground.
Footage of the crash and data from the plane would provide insights into what happens when a plane crashes, »

Channel 4 has axed reality TV series Wife Swap and How Clean Is Your House?. The decision follows the announcement that the channel will stop broadcasting Big Brother after its final run next summer, The Guardian reports. Head of Channel 4 Julian Bellamy said: "The decommission of Big Brother earlier this year has been the catalyst for a process of creative renewal right across Channel 4. "When Wife Swap launched, it was a truly groundbreaking programme which heralded an era of new factual formats right across (more) »

Last month we reported that Paranormal Activity director Oren Peli was starting production on his next big screen project Area 51. For those living in a cave or under a rock, Area 51 has long been the focus of much extraterrestrial conspiracy theory. Famed for being a hotbed of alien activity, whether it be spaceships or alien beings, Area 51 holds a special place in modern day pop lore (thanks in part to movies like Independence Day).
Well the script was supposed to be one of the secrets that no one would ever crack. *Snicker* Come on now! This is the 21st century; home to the internet (thanks Al Gore), Facebook, Twitter and 24 hour non-stop news, sports and games. Did they really think that a leak of some sort wasn’t going to happen? The sixth series of Alan Sugar's The Apprentice has been rescheduled to take place in the summer. Lord Sugar's show will clash with Channel 4 reality series Big Brother, which traditionally airs in late May or early June, according to The Guardian. The moves comes after the BBC was criticised for political impartiality by allowing Sugar to continue with the show following his appointment to the House of Lords as an enterprise tsar. The BBC ruled that Sugar could remain on the reality series, but said that it would reconsider the scheduling if it clashed with the (more) »

You Can't Stop Progress. Hardware Directed by Richard Stanley In a post-apocalyptic future somewhere in a radioactive desert, terminally ill Moses Baxter (Dylan McDermott) has just returned from scavenging for whatever waste he may find that could be of use to him either back home or for sale. Along his journey he discovers some robotic parts from some unknown android which he brings to his dope-smoking sculptor girlfriend Julie (Stacey Travis) as a Christmas present. She incorporates it into her latest piece, but neither of them is aware that the hardware is actually a robot programmed to kill humans. After settling in and reconnecting following his long absence, their reunion is cut short when the robot awakens, reassembles itself and resumes its original purpose as a government-sponsored population control droid. Despite few similarities, Hardware was dismissed by most as a rip-off of The Terminator. In fact, the film was heavily »

The paper notes that because the judge "[believes] him to be a flight risk, U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Leo T. Sorokin has »

Big Brother champ Adam Jasinski is used to confined spaces with round-the-clock surveillance, so this shouldn't be a problem for him. A federal judge in Boston has denied a motion to release the reality meathead, who's been locked up since his arrest two weeks ago on drug-peddling charges. "He is detained," court clerk Maria Simeone tells E! News, adding that U.S. District Judge Leo T. Sorokin "determined that the government had met its burden of proof based on the evidence and that the defendant posed a risk of flight." With so many Chinese films still being called ‘Kung Fu’ something or other, and with the continuing global success of Michael Bay’s blockbuster “Transformer” franchise, “Kung Fu Cyborg: Metallic Attraction” was pretty much inevitable. The Hong Kong director getting in on the act is none other than Jeffrey Lau, who previously had hits with the likes of “A Chinese Tall Story” and the classic Stephen Chow “A Chinese Odyssey” vehicles. Perhaps unsurprisingly given Lau’s predilection for the mass mixing of genres, although the film’s advertising suggested non-stop brawling robots, he delivers something quite different, backed by a top cast of Hong Kong and Mainland stars and some boisterously over the top special effects. The film follows Alex Fong (recently in the excellent “I Corrupt all Cops”) as K-1, a state built cyborg who for no discernable reason is sent by his creator (the inimitable Eric Tsang in »

Director: Kevin Chu. Review: Adam Wing. Replacing football (well it’s just not soccer is it) with basketball, Kung Fu Dunk is the latest cinematic showpiece from director Kevin Chu. You probably haven’t heard of him and there’s a really good reason for that, his movies are rubbish. Kung Fu Dunk comes complete with action choreography from the team that brought us Shaolin Soccer, Curse Of The Golden Flower and House Of Flying Daggers. The cast is pretty damn impressive too, not only do we have Eric Tsang and Jay Chou competing for our attention, the ever-adorable Charlene Choi makes an appearance in pigtails and glasses. Which is always a good thing in my book, and believe me, she has never looked better than she does here. Fang Shi-Jie spends most of his time perfecting his ancient skills in the local martial arts school, that is until he »

So it was decided that “Laughing Gor” would get his very own movie, and hence “Turning Point”, a prequel of how he came to be a police officer under deep cover in the triads. The movie itself is somewhat history in the making- since when have you heard of a supporting character on a Tvb series so popular it gets its own movie, complete with heavyweights Anthony Wong, Francis Ng and Eric Tsang. Just as notable is how this movie managed to attract Shaw Brothers to produce its first movie after a 7-year dormancy. »

Shaw Brothers, known for innovative martial arts movies during the '60s, is coming back at a time when the Hong Kong filmmaking industry needs them.
Under a joint venture with the partially Shaw-owned Television Broadcasts Limited, the studio has four films either scheduled to be released or in production through 2010. The slate is based on a three-pronged strategy to target local audiences, mobilize local film industry workers, and to showcase Shaw Studios, a Us$180 million facility in Hong Kong’s Clearwater Bay.
Virginia Lok, production resources division controller for Television Broadcasts Limited, said a number of local filmmakers are now working abroad, and as a result, productions have decreased.
"Although a lot of Hong Kong filmmakers are now working in China, a considerable number of crews remain in Hong Kong; there weren’t enough jobs," Lok said. "Our priority is to hire Hong Kong crew and Hong Kong actors in our films. »

Oh, it does me good to see that logo at the front of the trailer for Herman Yau’s Turning Gate. Emerging from a long period of dormancy - unless memory fails the last film they produced was 2002’s Drunken Money - the legendary Shaw Brothers have teamed with Tvb and director Herman Yau to produce Turning Gate, a prequel film to popular Tvb television series EU with Michael Tse reprising his role of undercover cop turned gangster Laughing. And it doesn’t look half bad, either. Francis Ng, Anthony Wong and Eric Tsang also star. Check the trailer below the break!

This Teaser Trailer for Bodyguards and Assassins (aka Dark October) isn’t exacly brand new but since I haven’t seen it on any niche news site and I noticed that I haven’t typed a single word on director Teddy Chan and producer Peter Chan’s latest project I thought I should post it anyway.
The film is set on October 15th 1905 with the father of the Chinese Revolution, Dr. Sun Yat-sen visiting Hong Kong for negotiations. During his one-day stay, forces from the collapsing Qing Dynasty send out assassins to get rid of the politician and only the brave bodyguards coming from the streets of Hong Kong can prevent it…
[See post to watch Flash video] Like in (or maybe because of) Jian Guo Da Ye (The Great Cause of China’s Foundation/Founding of the Nation), Peter Chan managed to lure in a truck load of stars like Donnie Yen, Leon Lai, Eric Tsang, »
