Any production can benefit from the addition of a quality explosion. While they’re a given for your average action movie, which courtroom, period or costume drama wouldn’t also be better with the inclusion of a timely explosion? Imagine a massive fireball going off behind Mr Darcy while Elizabeth swoons…
Dtfx is one of the most experienced and successful SFX companies in Australia, and we love making explosions of all types – dust, cork, fuel, gas – we even like simulated explosions.
We take into account your creative needs, budget, schedule and visual style when designing an explosion. We work out the best combination of techniques to create a look which answers your brief.
We put safety first and last when it comes to designing an explosion. We help with all the shot planning, camera positioning, safety compliance, statutory requirements and on set operation to minimise the risks while getting a great looking blast.

After nearly 20 years in Shed 1 at the Canal Road Film Centre, Dtfx is moving workshops…
All the way to Shed 2.
It’s a little sad to be leaving here, and there’s a stunning amount of gear to be shifted, but the opportunity to move into more efficient and productive space was too good to pass up.
During the time I’ve been here, we’ve gone from having a basic setup to now having a wide range of quality, professional SFX gear. We can service pretty much any effect that you can think of, and we do it quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively.
We’ve got wind machines, smoke machines, pyro and explosives gear, fire and flame gear, rigging gear, air gear, water pumps and tankers, arguably the best rain set-up in the country, electronics gear, safety gear and just about every other type of effects gear you can think of.

Dtfx is pleased to announce that we have added to our fleet of high volume Wind Machines.
Wind is a staple Special Effect. Whether you need big wind to simulate a tropical storm or a discreet, quiet air mover to ruffle a curtain on a set, wind can add mood and character to your job.
We have recently added to our range of wind machines to offer you even greater choice.
We have 2 x 2 metre, high output electric wind machines. We have an historic, original 1.6 metre electric Ritter fan.
We have a lightweight, carbon fibre bladed Rotax petrol-powered wind machine for difficult locations.
We have highly experienced crew to operate them.
All these machines produce wind from a light breeze up to a punchy Beaufort Force 8 gale (over 60 km/h)
We also recently acquired four Mole Richardson Type 1971 studio fans.
These are the classic studio film fan. They’re quiet,...

As a practical effect, rain might seem pretty straightforward, but if it.s not 100 per cent, it could detract from an otherwise convincing production.
Used in everything from feature films to TVCs, .movie rain. has been around since the beginning of filmmaking. Traditionally, SFX companies have used rain systems developed out of firefighting systems . which, while they work, have a number of drawbacks.
.These systems came out of America; they.re great for fires, but have significant problems for film work,. says special effects veteran of more than 25 years, David Trethewey. .Firefighting systems are designed to put out fires. They throw an enormous amount of water into a space to cool it and quench the fire, and they.re not particularly concerned with how that water gets there . with the pattern that comes out of the nozzle . they just want to get water into the space.
