This Weekend at the Movies: November 6, 2009

6 November 2009 3:32 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

It's hard to figure Hollywood out sometimes. Last week we had nothing outside of the last minute addition, Wednesday release of the Michael Jackson doc This is It and then this week is packed, albeit with a lot of smaller stuff and a pair of thrillers, but any weekend where I am posting five reviews is a pretty big week for movie releases. Let's check 'em out shall we?

The Fourth Kind Is it real? No. Is it any good? It's not bad and will likely be better for people going in knowing wholeheartedly it is fake, but then again, the filmmaker's attempts to convince you it's real may grate on you even more under those circumstances. It's hard to figure which side the general public will come down on this one and user comments should prove entertaining reads.

This film is rated PG-13 for violent/disturbing images, some terror, »

Your Holiday Indie Film Preview

4 November 2009 8:26 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

2009 is about to end with a bang, though probably not the apocalyptic kind predicted in the long-awaited adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" or Chris Smith's terrifying doc "Collapse," though those will both be playing at your local arthouse. Instead, audiences will be able to enjoy a winter of wildly different indie film offerings to reflect the wildly different tastes of moviegoers as we leave one decade and move into another. (There are also many different ways to watch them, as you can tell from our Anywhere But a Movie Theater section.)

From November through January, there will be musicals ("Nine"), comedies (Broken Lizard's "The Slammin' Salmon") and stop-motion animated wonderments ("A Town Called Panic") to entertain and new films from Michael Haneke, Pedro Almodóvar, Richard Linklater, Terry Gilliam and Werner Herzog to ponder. And if new movies aren't necessarily doing the trick, you can always cozy »

Thinking Outside the Box

2 November 2009 7:51 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

A week loaded with oh-so-worthy awards season contenders is offset with the comic relief of Jim Carrey's performance captured flailing, George Clooney's self-deluded staring, and the teasing promise of an affordable(!) trip to the ballet.

"The Box"

You could make the argument that if Richard Kelly could only get the whole world to come over to his house and listen to his record collection, he might not feel the need to make films at all. That said, his fall from grace following the flop of "Southland Tales" was so total that he went from the director anointed as the hipster's David Lynch to the arthouse M. Night Shyamalan overnight. With much riding on this comeback, Kelly has turned to Richard Matheson's short story "Button, Button," previously immortalized as an episode of "The Twilight Zone, »

Checkmate: An Advance Review of PBS' "Endgame" on "Masterpiece Contemporary"

23 October 2009 8:37 AM, PDT | Televisionary | See recent Televisionary news »

Apartheid is an ugly word, conjuring up images of racial segregation and hatred from a time in the not-too-distant past of South Africa. PBS' new political thriller Endgame, which airs Sunday evening as part of the public broadcaster's Masterpiece Contemporary wheel, dramatizes not the plight of the common South African man and woman under the draconian decree of apartheid but rather the machinery operating behind the scenes to bring an end to apartheid once and for all. Written by Paula Milne (Second Sight) and directed by Pete Travis (Vantage Point), Endgame revolves around a series of secret talks between the Anc and the South African government brokered by Consolidated Goldfields, a multi-national company with vested financial interests in South Africa. The talks took place at an estate in England, far away from the violent rebellion in South Africa, and despite the risk in bringing together these enemies, the open lines »

Peeking Behind the Doors of Seismic Change: Televisionary Talks to "Endgame" Star Chiwetel Ejiofor

20 October 2009 11:50 AM, PDT | Televisionary | See recent Televisionary news »

Golden Globe nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor is perhaps best known for his work in such diverse films as American Gangster, Dirty Pretty Things, Serenity, Love Actually, Redbelt, and Kinky Boots. The British actor has made a career of playing deeply complex individuals, from cross-dresser Lola in Kinky Boots to Dirty Pretty Things' cab driver and former doctor Okwe. In PBS' gripping apartheid thriller Endgame, which airs Stateside this Sunday as part of the new season of Masterpiece Contemporary, Ejiofor, recently appointed an OBE by Queen Elizabeth, plays South African political figure Thabo Mbeki, a key player in secret negotiations between the African National Congress and the South African government that were brokered by Consolidated Goldfields. Remarkably these talks resulted in an end to apartheid in South Africa and Endgame, written by Paula Milne and directed by Pete Travis, dramatize the secret talks, which occurred at Mells Park, an estate in England. »

Trio of Trailers: 'Endgame,' 'Old Dogs' and 'Tales from the Golden Age'

18 October 2009 2:24 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Pete Travis, director of Vantage Point, recruited William Hurt, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mark Strong and Johnny Lee Miller to star in a new film called Endgame and it was finally picked up by small-time distributor Monterey Media and the first trailer has made its way online. Along with Endgame, a trailer for Tales from the Golden Age, which was helmed by an international crew of directors starting with 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days helmer Christian Mungiu along with Ioana Uricaru, Hanno Hofer, Razvan Marculescu and Constantin Popescu; and a second trailer for the John Travolta and Robin Williams comedy Old Dogs has arrived.

I have featured each trailer below along with the synopsis as well as a link for each. Enjoy.

Endgame - Trailer November 6, 2009 South Africa, 1985. While the country is under siege, sanctions are biting, Mandela's imprisonment is an international cause celebre, and the Anc guerrilla terrorist attacks are escalating. »

PBS and Monterey Media Give a Start to 'Endgame'

5 August 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- File this one under "new trends" in the distribution business, PBS (Charlie Rose and Frontline) and California-based Monterey Media will partner on the Sundance preemed Endgame - a political thriller from the Channel 4 folks with a fine cocktail of actors. With so many film studio specialty divisions shutting their doors, it is comforting to see that more of the smaller players are backing such projects while at the same time forming new alliances. Currently in production with Come Like Shadows, Pete Travis' Endgame received a television premeire in the U.K this past May. This is about a businessman who initiates covert discussions between the African National Congress and white intellectuals to try and find a peaceful solution to the Apartheid regime. THR reports that it will air on PBS' "Masterpiece Contemporary" on Oct. 25 and will be released theatrically by Monterey Media in select U.S. cities on Oct. »

‘Vantage Point’ Director Pete Travis To Update Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’

23 June 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Modernizing Shakespeare is so hot for ’09. A few weeks ago we learned that “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke is tackling an update of the Bard’s “Hamlet” starring Emile Hirsch. Now The Hollywood Reporter brings news of a “modern-day makeover” of “Macbeth” titled “Come Like Shadows.” Little has been revealed about the plot or contemporary alterations of this second adaptation, though like the “Hamlet” update it is being labeled a thriller.

Pete Travis, who has just been hired to direct “Shadows,” further describes it as being “a bold, sexy addition to my slate of films. It’s a powerful, tragic morality tale about personal and political corruption. An awesome, epic story for our troubled times, its irresistible tension holds the audience in a vice like grip, its raw emotion will break their hearts.”

“Shadows” may not have the cool factor that “Hamlet” has thanks to Hardwicke’s involvement, but it does »

Pete Travis is Set to 'Come Like Shadows'

23 June 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- Originally set up with John Maybury in the driver's seat and with Sean Bean and Tilda Swinton in the lead roles, Come Like Shadows has resurfaced with Pete Travis (helmer of recent thrillers Vantage Point and Endgame) set to direct the pic. Scripted by Vincent Regan, Jennifer Lee Carrell and Nick Saunders, this is an adaptation of Shakespeare's "Macbeth", but it is designed to be user-friendly to a contemporary audience. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Smuggler Films' Patrick Milling Smith and John Hart will produce along with writer Saunders. Smuggler produced films such as Boys Don't Cry and You Can Count on Me as Hart-Sharp Entertainment. Who would you cast as MacBeth and Lady Macbeth?  »

Chiwetel Ejiofor Exclusive Video Interview Endgame -- He talks about Endgame, Sundance, Serenity, 2012, Children of Men, and a lot more!

5 February 2009 | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

I believe I first saw Chiwetel Ejiofor in director Stephen FrearsDirty Pretty Things”. At the time, I remember thinking this was someone that had some talent. And based on the amount of movies he’s worked on since then, I think many of Hollywood’s biggest director’s agree with me. Since you may not recognize Chiwetel’s name….perhaps you may have seen him in “Serenity”, “Inside Man”, “American Gangster”, “Talk to Me”, and one of my favorite films of the last decade…. “Children of Men”. And that’s just what he’s done in the past, as later this year he’s one of the leads in director Roland Emmerich’s next movie “2012”. Anyway, as a big fan of his work, when I was offered the chance to speak with him at this year’s Sundance Film Festival about his work in director Pete Travis’ new film »

Director Pete Travis Exclusive Video Interview Endgame -- He talks about making Endgame, being in Sundance, what he might do next, and a lot more

5 February 2009 | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Note: Due to interviewing over 30 people and being provided with movie clips to almost every film at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, it’s taken some time to post everything on the site. The goal is to be finished with all the Sundance stuff soon. In case you’ve missed clips or video interviews, look for a big wrap-up article when it’s all online. One of the movies I was looking forward to seeing at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was director Pete Travis’ “Endgame”, which stars William Hurt, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mark Strong, and Jonny Lee Miller. The film is a political thriller about the ending of apartheid in South Africa. For those that don’t know, in the late 1980’s, South Africa was still dealing with apartheid. The white minority held all the power and groups like the Anc (African National Congress) were fighting to try »

First Images and Poster from Endgame – A Sundance 2009 Movie -- Starring William Hurt, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mark Strong, and Jonny Lee Miller in a Peter Travis film

7 January 2009 | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

One of the movies I’m looking forward to watching at this year’s Sundance is director Pete Travis’ “Endgame”. The movie is based on "The Fall of Apartheid" by Robert Harvey and it has a great cast that features William Hurt, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mark Strong, and Jonny Lee Miller. Peter’s last movie was the surprise hit “Vantage Point” and this film is a return to his more indie roots. Since the synopsis is quite wordy….here’s what Sundance has on the movie followed by the images. Look for a few more Sundance preview articles in the coming days…. South Africa...the late 1980s. The African National Congress (Anc) wages an armed struggle against apartheid; President P.W. Botha clings to the last threads of power; the country is on the brink of bloody insurrection. In a gripping thriller based on real-life events, Endgame drops us into »
