Kate Beckinsale, Scott Eastwood and James Cromwell will star in kidnapping drama “Stolen Girl” directed by Britain’s James Kent.
“Stolen Girl,” which is in pre-production in Southern Italy’s Apulia region, is inspired by the real story of an American woman named Maureen Dabbagh who spent years tracking down her daughter who had been abducted and taken to the Middle East by the child’s father.
In the film, which starts out in 1993 in Ohio, Maureen’s 6-year-old daughter Amina is snuck out of the country by her ex-husband, Karim. After years of unsuccessful attempts to find her, Maureen intersects with a professional retriever of internationally abducted kids who promises to help her find Amina in exchange for her collaboration. Maureen eventually succeeds in tracking down her ex-husband and Amina in Beirut, where she will face “the most difficult decision of her life,” according to a provided synopsis.

As Paramount+ prepares for its splashy, star-studded U.K. and Ireland launch in London on Monday, Paramount’s president and CEO of streaming Tom Ryan spoke to Variety about the rebranded company’s global streaming biz expansion that, besides being powered by original content, stands out in the field for its diversified model.
This model involves a mix of platforms and partnerships, combining direct-to-consumer and a la carte offerings with a market-by-market approach. The two main prongs that distinguish Paramount’s streaming offer are the combination of the fast-growing Paramount+ premium offer and its free, ad-supported streaming service Pluto TV, which Ryan founded.
The global rollout will see Paramount+ launch in 2023 in India in partnership with Viacom18, which recently scored streaming rights to the Indian Premier League cricket tournament previously held by Disney+. In its first Asia launch, Paramount+ debuted last week in South Korea as a free-of-charge addition to the Cj Enm-controlled TVing platform.

ViacomCBS International Studios is developing a TV series depicting the life of groundbreaking Spanish fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga with British director James Kent (“Testament of Youth”) on board to direct and Spain’s Frida Torresblanco to serve as executive producer.
Balenciaga was born in 1895 in Getaria, a fishing village in northern Spain, and moved to Paris in 1937 where he made his mark as an innovative master of haute couture revered by colleagues and contemporaries such as Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy and Coco Chanel.
During the 1950s and 1960s, Balenciaga reached the height of his career by unveiling previously unseen styles, fabrics and shapes, such as the tunic, the “baby doll” and shift dresses. Unlike many other designers, Balenciaga was very private and elusive, having given only two newspaper interviews during his 50-year career. On the day of his death, in 1972, Women’s Wear Daily ran the headline “The king is dead.

ViacomCBS International Studios has announced that it is developing a TV series based on the life of Italian female artist Artemisia Gentileschi, who is considered to be one of the most accomplished painters in the Baroque period.
ViacomCBS International Studios has attached Pan’s Labyrinth producer Frida Torresblanco to develop the project, while former ViacomCBS International Studios UK managing director Jill Offman is also involved through her new outfit 66 Media. Both will serve as executive producers.

The series will be based on Mary Garrard’s non-fiction academic text, Artemisia Gentileschi: The Image of the Female Hero in Italian Baroque Art, which includes 400-year old transcripts of the...

Bob and Jeanne Berney’s Picturehouse will open Marco Pontecorvo’s Fatima in theaters and direct to home (PVOD) throughout North America on Aug. 28.
The pic was last scheduled for an Aug. 14, 1,000-theater-plus run. The distributor has been having sold out pop-up drive-in previews recently as part of their grassroots word-of-mouth digital marketing campaign.
Picturehouse picked up the movie in October. The movie was first scheduled for April 24 before the exhibition Covid-19 shutdown. The movie is set during the Spanish Flu, and has echoes to what’s going on now.
“The response to Fatima at our Pop-Up Drive-In Premieres has been wonderful,” says Bob Berney, CEO. “Audiences and social media reactions have convinced us that we need to get this movie out now. Ethan Hawke and Alessandro Nivola are teaming up in “Satan Is Real,” the story of the Louvin brothers. The real-life best friends will portray Charlie and Ira Louvin, influential country musicians whose relationship is forged by love, hate, jealousy, and alcohol.
In an interview with Variety, Hawke and Nivola said they hoped to achieve a music term called “blood harmony” in their performances. It’s a term that describes the kind of harmonizing that can be achieved when family members sing together, because their genetic link allows them to share the same tone in their voice.
“It’s such an important expression to us,” said Hawke. “It sounds both violent and beautiful and the music should be that. It’s aggressive, it’s electric, it’s strange. It’s not Brooklyn folk rock. It’s not wannabe cool guy country. It’s hillbilly gospel music.”

“Visceral” marks Jardin’s follow-up to “Sleepless Night,” which sold to more than 30 territories and was remade in the U.S. with Jamie Foxx and Michelle Monaghan. Jardin also successfully leaped into TV and directed Canal Plus’s critically acclaimed series “Spiral” and “Braquo.”

The awards shows will continue until morale improves. That’s good news for Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite,” which got off to a great start by winning both Best Actress for Olivia Colman and a Special Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival and now leads all movies with 13 nominations at the British Independent Film Awards. Following it are “American Animals” (11), “Beast” (10), and “You Were Never Really Here” (8); all are nominated for the top prize, as is “Disobedience.”
Also well represented is Rachel Weisz, whose roles in “Disobedience” and “The Favourite” have her up for both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively; her co-stars in both films — Olivia Colman and Emma Stone in “The Favourite,” Rachel McAdams in “Disobedience” — are all nominated as well.
This year’s Bifa ceremony takes place on Sunday, December 2 in London. Here’s the full list of nominees:

Yorgos Lanthimos’ Venice Special Grand Jury Prize winner The Favourite leads nominations for this year’s British Independent Film Awards with 13 in its court. The twisted take on the British monarchy and period cinema, which Fox Searchlight releases November 23 in North America, has nods for Venice Best Actress laureate Olivia Colman as well as for Best Film, Director, Screenplay and for its supporting cast Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz. The latter is also up for Best Actress in Oscar winner Sebastian Lelio’s Disobedience, which likewise scored a Best Film nom and put Rachel McAdams in the Supporting Actress category.
Following The Favourite is Bart Layton’s heist pic American Animals with 11 nominations, Michael Pearce’s Beast with 10 and Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here scooping eight. Each is also competing in the Best British Independent Film race.
Bifa noted today that the nominations list demonstrates a record year for female representation, with over 40% of the individual nominations recognizing women in the industry across directing, writing, producing, performance and craft. Female nominees make up over 50% of the talent nominated in Best British Independent Film and dominate both Most Promising Newcomer and Breakthrough Producer.
Ramsay notably continues her long association with Bifa, scoring her third nomination for Best Screenplay and her second for Best Director. With her You Were Never Really Here, Joaquin Phoenix scores his second Bifa Best Actor nomination for his role as a tortured hitman in the psychological noir thriller.
Joe Cole (A Prayer Before Dawn), Rupert Everett (The Happy Prince), Charlie Plummer (Lean On Pete) and Steve Coogan (Stan & Ollie) round out Best Actor. The Best Actress category also features Gemma Arterton (The Escape), Maxine Peake (Funny Cow) and Jessie Buckley (Beast).
The Bifa ceremony will be held on Sunday December 2 at London’s Old Billingsgate. Below is the full list of nominations.

Disobedience thrives in what the studios used to turn out regularly in the golden era of so-called women’s pictures. It’s a straight-up melodrama disguised in the trappings of art house fare. But, as I say in my video review (click the link above to watch), two superb performances from a couple of Rachels, Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams and a compelling screen adaptation from director Sebastian Lelio and writer Rebecca Lenkiewicz lift this way above the norm and turn it into a simmering drama that smolders and excites.
Based on the novel by Naomi Alderman, Disobedience is set in the confined world of an Orthodox Jewish area of London. Unconventional Ronit (Weisz) is the daughter of a prominent rabbi but fled years earlier to live her own life far from the rigid rules of that religious lifestyle. Her hair is long, she smokes, she dresses like a modern woman,...

Coming off a Foreign Language Oscar win for A Fantastic Woman, writer/director Sebastián Lelio is already back on the festival circuit in support of his latest project, Disobedience.
Starring Rachel McAdams, Rachel Weisz and Alessandro Nivola and premiering in Tiff before moving on to other festivals, including Tribeca, the adaptation of Naomi Alderman’s novel takes as its focus the Orthodox Jewish community of North London. Following Ronit, a woman (Weisz) who returns to the community that shunned her for her attraction to a female childhood friend, the film watches as the pair meet again, passions are revived, and Ronit and her lover explore the boundaries of faith and sexuality.
“I had done a film called Gloria, and somehow I started for the first time to receive some offers to direct in English. I didn’t like any one, until Frida Torresblanco, one of the producers of the film,...

Sebastian Lelio’s “Disobedience” is a quiet, understated drama with one of the buzziest sex scenes of any movie this year. One a few high-profile acquisition titles at the Toronto International Film Festival, “Disobedience” quickly became known as “the movie where Rachel Weisz spits in Rachel McAdams’ mouth” shortly after its premiere. And while that scene doesn’t convey the strong performances and measured emotional journey at the movie’s core, it certainly leaves an impression.

On the morning of April 18, 2017, five young filmmakers gathered in front of seven actors, directors, and executives to pitch their movies. Two hours later, one filmmaker received $1 million. This was the first edition of “At&T Presents: Untold Stories,” a new partnership between the mobile provider and Tribeca Film Festival, designed to fill a gap in the marketplace by not only financing a project but also providing it with an audience.
The winner, Nyu film school graduate Faraday Okoro, received a giant check at a lunch following the pitch session broadcast on Facebook Live (see the full 92-minute pitch session below). In addition to the cash prize (all projects required budgets under $1 million), Okoro’s work is guaranteed a slot at the 2018 edition of the Tribeca Film Festival (assuming he meets that deadline) and will run across several At&T video platforms, including Directv.
