As Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary approaches it’s important to see this as a time of renewal and yes, regeneration for the show, not just an opportunity to bask in nostalgia and past glories. Doctor Who has to intrigue and excite its core audience of children for the franchise to remain healthy.
Yes, Russell T Davies is coming back as showrunner, but he knows more than anyone else the importance of keeping Doctor Who alive for modern audiences. Yes, he’s brought David Tennant back, but to play the Fourteenth Doctor, a whole new regeneration who even has a different coloured outfit; yes, his Doctor who encounters Donna Noble, who I think we can all agree was a character who still had a great deal of untapped potential, and now we know that the series will be scored by classic-nu-Who-composer Murray Gold, who will be bringing lots of new and exciting ideas.

Another Halloween treat for horror fans this weekend is Spell, a new horror film that is now available on premium VOD and for digital purchase. I recently had a chance to talk with director Mark Tonderai, who told me about his interest and connection to this film and its themes, working with Omari Hardwick and Loretta Devine, and the films that inspired his take on Spell.
Can you talk about how you got involved with Spell and what was the creative process of getting from what you had in your head to the finished film?
Mark Tonderai: I've been doing a lot TV for a while now and I've really enjoyed working with some of the most amazing crews kind of in the business. But the real trick for TV is that you can't really sort of claim ownership of it creatively. You can to a certain extent, as a TV director,...

For “Spell” director Mark Tonderai, the movie serves as more than a hoodoo spirit-filled thriller — it’s his comeback story. After helming “House at the End of the Street,” the 2012 film of the same genre starring Jennifer Lawrence that raked in $44 million worldwide — opportunities to create another film of that magnitude were scarce, the director says.
“The film market changed. So, business changed and basically became about ultra-load budgets,” he tells Variety.
Being the accomplished director he is, Tonderai found work on a number of TV sets — he’s currently spending his days filming on the set of Netflix’s “Locke & Key” Season 2 (while also following Covid-19 guidelines). But because he was a Black director in the TV space, he began to feel some restrictions on where his creative abilities could take him within the realm of the small screen. Soon enough, he felt the itch to get back into studio films.

If there is one thing that horror films have taught us by now, don’t return to your childhood home that you ran away from in the past. Just don’t, it never ends good, you’ll probably end up dead or held against your will by some murderous local. Spell is yet another film that just confirms this.
When Marquis (Omari Hardwick) flies to rural Appalachia for his father’s funeral, his plane carrying him and his family crashes. When he awakens he finds himself wounded and alone in Ms. Eloise’s (Loretta Devine) attic. With no way to escape and his family missing, he is nursed back to health in preparation for the blood moon celebrations.

Marquis T Woods has it all; material wealth, a beautiful and loving family, a successful career, the respect of his clients and a pilot’s licence. So if you want to shake things up, what do you get the big shot lawyer who has everything?
A plane crash in rural Appalachia and a short stay in the Airbnb from hell.
Marquis T Woods (Omari Hardwick) worked hard to escape the demons of his past and had no intention of ever looking back. But when he is summoned to his childhood home by the death of his father, his supportive wife Veora (Lorraine Burroughs) convinces him that saying goodbye and putting the abuse of his past to rest is the right thing to do.
Marquis T Woods (calling our lead by his full name is a weird quirk of this film) loads up his Cessna with Veora, their high-end luggage and their lowkey entitled teens.

“We don’t have much in the way of Obamacare down here,” says Eloise (Loretta Devine), the hoodoo-practicing matriarch who serves as the chief villain of Spell. That it’s the most ominous line of Kurt Wimmer’s screenplay provides some indication of the dearth of genuine thrills in the new horror film directed by Mark Tonderai that provides an African-American riff on themes rendered much scarier in Misery.
Heavy on oppressively humid atmosphere and light on originality, the film is a mostly forgettable genre exercise whose viewers won’t miss much by watching at home.

“Spell” adds to the significant recent growth of African American horror cinema, though really only in casting terms. Otherwise, this reasonably suspenseful if implausible tale is just another variation on the familiar formula of “city folk” making a big mistake going to the country, where every primitive peril awaits them. Here, instead of homicidal hillbillies à la “Texas Chainsaw” and “The Hills Have Eyes,” it’s an Appalachian enclave of Black hoodoo practitioners, with upwardly mobile Omari Hardwick at the “Misery”-esque mercy of witchy Loretta Devine.
Shot in South Africa, British-Zimbabwean director Mark Tonderai and veteran Hollywood scribe Kurt Wimmer’s film isn’t aiming for regional authenticity, though it might have poured on the bad-dream atmospherics a bit thicker to make up for that lack. Nonetheless, this is a decently stylish thriller with occult elements that should satisfy viewers’ genre requirements, though few will demand a second watch...

"I'm gon' fix ya, I'ma fix you good." Paramount Pictures has released an official trailer for a horror movie called Spell, from director Mark Tonderai (House at the End of the Street). In this changed world of cinema due the pandemic, all the distributors are desperate to release any content they can and hope it finds an audience - so every horror movie available this year is being released in October (most of them available on VOD right away). Spell is about a wealthy father who survives a plane crash in rural Appalachia, but soon becomes suspicious of the strange elderly couple who take him in to nurse him back to health with ancient Hoodoo remedies. Omari Hardwick stars as Marq in this, along with Loretta Devine, John Beasley, and Lorraine Burroughs. This is a chilling hoodoo twist on the typical locked-up-until-they-heal horror concept with some seriously unsettling moments with this woman.

Netflix is leaning into its strengths in 2020. Not only is the streaming giant pumping out dozens, if not hundreds of new shows, but many of their original series meet the demand illustrated by past successes or fill holes left by departing favorites.
So is there a new “Stranger Things” on the horizon? Perhaps a worthy follow-up to “Orange Is the New Black?” What about a replacement for syndicated sitcoms like “The Office” and “Friends”? You better believe Netflix is working to give subscribers what they want, and the below 2020 preview should illustrate exactly that.
With more competition than ever from Disney and Apple, and even more services on the way (hello HBO Max and Peacock), 2020 will be a critical year for the current king of streaming. So here’s what they’re working with:

Doctor Who's incredible Rosa episode was originally a source of worry and then pride, says Chris Chibnall
During a visit to the Cardiff set of Doctor Who Season 12, Den Of Geek and other outlets chatted with showrunner Chris Chibnall and core cast members Jodie Whittaker, Bradley Walsh, Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole about one of the standout moments of Season 11 - "Rosa," the episode that told the story of Rosa Parks battling racism through a slightly sci-fi lens.
Asked whether the team was worried about tackling this particular chapter in humanity's history, Chibnall offered this candid insight: "Were we worried? Yeah, absolutely, we had sleepless nights. Yeah. I worried about it from the start, from the moment I kind of came up with the idea, from the moment we started working on the stories, through when were shooting it, through the edit... but we really wanted to tell that story.

“Power” star Omari Hardwick is in final negotiations to lead the upcoming horror-thriller “Spell,” sources tell Variety.
Hardwick’s attachment to the Paramount Players project comes just as his hit crime drama is set to finish up with its sixth and final season.
“Spell” follows a man (Hardwick) who crashes his plane while en route to rural Appalachia with his family for a funeral and awakens to find himself totally alone and without his bearings. Relieved to be discovered by a seemingly kind elderly couple, he has no way of knowing the dark machinations that lie in wait as he is pulled deeper and deeper into a sinister world.
“Hush” (2008) and “House at the End of the Street” director Mark Tonderai will helm from a script by “Point Break” (2015) and “Total Recall” (2012) scribe Kurt Wimmer. Wimmer will also produce along with Gordon Gray, Morris Chestnut and Brian Wilkins.
“Spell” will hit theaters Aug.

We knew from set pics that Doctor Who season 11 would take a trip back in time to the American civil rights movement of the 1950s and now, it’s been announced that this will form the backbone of episode three of the show’s eleventh season. Titled “Rosa,” the installment will feature the Doctor and her friends encountering the important historical figure.
“Rosa” will star Sherlock‘s Vinette Robinson as Rosa Parks along with Josh Bowman as an unknown character named Krasko. The episode’s penned by acclaimed novelist Malorie Blackman and showrunner Chris Chibnall and directed by Mark Tonderai (Black Lightning). It’s also one of several this season to be filmed in South Africa, along with today’s episode.

Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor unleashed 8.2M viewers and a 40.1% share for BBC One in the UK as the first episode of the new season of Doctor Who smashed the performance of recent airings.

To put this further into context, BBC One terror thriller Bodyguard opened with 6.7M viewers and a 35% share to become the biggest new drama launch of the year.
Her entrance was also bigger than debuts by previous doctors including David Tennant, Matt Smith and Capaldi.
The first season under the leadership of Chris Chibnall saw Whittaker’s Doctor joined by new friends Ryan (Tosin Cole), Yasmin (Mandip Gill) and Graham (Bradley Walsh). The next era started with the The Woman Who Fell to Earth episode, which was written by Chibnall and directed by Jamie Childs.

‘Doctor Who’ Season 11 Trailer: Jodie Whittaker Is Starting Again, Sonic Screwdriver in Hand (Video)
The (new) Doctor is in.
BBC America released the official trailer for the upcoming season of “Doctor Who” Thursday, showing new lead Jodie Whittaker in all her badass glory. Whittaker, as fans already know, will play the series’ first ever female Time Lord — a part that is not to be taken lightly. But based on the one-minute preview, she was “born for this.”
Peter Capaldi portrayed the 12th Doctor on the long-running series, giving up his sonic screw driver and keys to the Tardis during last year’s Christmas Special after making it known earlier in the year that he’d be exiting.

The news that Jodie Whittaker would be taking on the role of the 13th Doctor has been out for some time, but every new glimpse of her take on the iconic role seems to prove that gender has nothing to do with adventures through space and time.
Season 11 will be a fresh start for the series, bringing in not just Whittaker but incoming showrunner Chris Chibnall (succeeding Steven Moffat in the role) and a whole new cast. In the new trailer released below, we get glimpses of action, explosions, monsters, and the Doctor’s new companions, who have no problem pointing out who exactly is in charge.
Along with the trailer, the BBC released official descriptions for the first two episodes of the season, as follows:

It’s now just a couple of weeks until the Thirteenth Doctor finally – finally! – makes her proper debut when Doctor Who season 11 arrives this October. As previously revealed, the special hour-long season premiere is titled “The Woman Who Fell to Earth” and comes from the pen of showrunner Chris Chibnall, with direction by Jamie Childs. Furthermore, we now have this short synopsis to tease what’s in store for the new Doc – in short, she’s going to suffer from a bout of post-regeneration amnesia.

Remember how in 2008 we all thought a Day Of The Dead remake co-starring Nick Cannon was the lowest low? Well, sorry 2016 us – it’s only gotten worse. Hèctor Hernández Vicens’ Day Of The Dead: Bloodline is – against all odds – an even more ill-advised rehashing than Steve Miner’s. How? Hold on, let me unravel the mile-long scroll of notes I scribbled…ah. How about digitally abhorrent CGI scars and blood splatters? Horrendous Adr that starts the film with mismatched voices to mouths? Angled camera shots of half-empty rooms – like, who watched 1985’s Day Of The Dead and decided it needed more rape? If you’re going to remake history, there better be a good reason – case and point.

A twisted, cold-hearted monster features in this newly-released clip for Day of the Dead: Bloodline – and we’re not referring to the undead.
In fact, it’s a reanimated zombie that winds up saving the day, as Sophie Skelton’s heroine comes face-to-face with a sexual harasser (John Schaech) named Max. What follows is an unnerving exchange between Skelton and Schaech’s respective survivors, before the latter makes an unwanted advance.
Whether intentional or not, this Bloodline clip, one which arrives on the eve or release, appears to be ripped straight from the headlines, with the only difference being that a flesh-munching zombie arrives just in time to thwart an attempted rape. Because who said the undead always have to be portrayed as the bad guys?
Story-wise, Day of the Dead: Bloodline takes place in a “post-apocalyptic, zombie-filled world where a former med school student is tormented by a dark figure from her past.

(Cbr) House at the End of the Street director Mark Tonderai will remake George A. Romero’s 1985 zombie film Day of the Dead for Millennium Films. Deadline offers a one-sentence summary of the remake: “In this new version, years after the zombie plague has wiped out most of Earth’s population, a group of scientists and survivors attempt to find a cure, and instead open Pandora’s box.” Millennium announced the remake in July, with "Texas Chainsaw 3D" producers Lati Grobman and Christa Campbell attached. Tonderai wrote the script with Lars Jacobson, and they’re looking for a summer 2014 release.

Dear God help us all: The cinematic geniuses who collectively coughed up “Texas Chainsaw 3D” are presently hard at work on yet another “Day of the Dead” remake. This time around, the re-telling of George A. Romero’s zombie picture will be tackled by none other than “House at the End of the Street” director Mark Tonderai. Why do we need another remake of “Day of the Dead”? I’m guessing it’s because director John Luessenhop’s “Texas Chainsaw 3D” made some scratch at the box office earlier this year. And everyone knows that the boys and girls in Hollywood absolutely adore cash. Any kind of cash. If the moviegoers were willing to pay good money to see someone defecate inside a plastic bag for 90 minutes, we’d get a trilogy. In 3D. The latest remake reportedly takes place after the zombie apocalypse has destroyed most of the planet.

No, you’re not imagining things. Just five years from a 2008 direct-to-dvd low-budget remake, a new cheap remake of George A. Romero’s “Day Of The Dead” is shuffling across our screens next year courtesy of Millennium Films and Campbell Grobman Films. Deadline reports “House At The End Of The Street”—aka that Jennifer Lawrence horror movie—helmer Mark Tonderai has been tapped to direct the remake from a screenplay he co-wrote with Lars Jacobson. This modern-day version takes place “after the zombie plague has wiped out most of Earth’s population, [where] a group of scientists and survivors attempt to find a cure, and instead open Pandora’s box.” Production is set to start next summer. Although we weren’t quite as taken with it as others were (read our mixed review here), John Krokidas’ directorial debut “Kill Your Darlings” made a big splash earlier this year and has made a certain studio take note.

Millennium Films just hired "House At the End of the Street" director Mark Tonderai to helm the company's modern-day remake of George Romero's "Day of the Dead" zombie film. In this new version, years after the zombie plague has wiped out most of Earth's population, a group of scientists and survivors attempt to find a cure, and instead open Pandora's box. Tonderai wrote the script with Lars Jacobson. Romero directed the original movie back in 1985. Millennium then remade it in 2008 with Mena Suvari, Nick Cannon and director Steve Miner. The new version will begin casting soon and then go into production during the summer of 2014.

The remake of George A. Romero's cult zombie film Day Of The Dead is moving forward at Millennium Films. The studio hired Mark Tonderai to direct a modern-day retelling of the zombie movie. Tonderai is best known for directing House At The End of the Street.
According to Deadline, the new version takes place "years after the zombie plague has wiped out most of Earth’s population, [when] a group of scientists and survivors attempt to find a cure, and instead open Pandora’s box."
They’ll start casting the film soon, and the studio is looking to get the film in production by 2014. Zombies are very popular right now, and I doubt they are going to go away anytime soon.

George A Romero's Day Of The Dead is getting a big screen remake, and Mark Tonderai is set to direct it...
Arguably one of Zack Snyder's best films is the one that brought him to lots of people's attention in the first place: his remake of George A Romero's Dawn Of The Dead. Sure, it made one or two contentious decisions, and there's the usual argument over remaking such a film in the first place. But in the cold light of day, there's a lot that that film does right.
It's taken some time for it to happen, then, but plans are now afoot to bring a reake of Day Of The Dead to the screen as well. A director has now been found for the movie too, with Mark Tonderai set to take the job on. Tonderai most recently directed House At The End Of The Street.
