So you want to start watching Mobile Suit Gundam ? That’s very cool and if it were another franchise, I’d tell you to simply “Start at the beginning.” But the Gundam franchise is not quite like that. Sure, you can technically start at the beginning, but then you have to clarify just what beginning you want to start at. Is it the first series, something that later branches off into sequels, spinoffs and various other bits of the franchise? Or is it the first series in the timeline that most matches what you want from a Gundam anime? So to help you out a bit, I’m going to run through the available Gundam offerings on Crunchyroll in their respective timelines. That way, you’ll actually have a bit of information before you start and won’t drown in Yoshiyuki Tomino’s robot-fueled empire. Universal Century Mobile Suit Gundam...

Hayao Miyazaki is one of the greatest Japanese animators and mangakas of all time. His latest animated film, The Boy and the Heron, won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film this year.
Since the Oscar win, the film has seen an increase in demand, but it was not available to stream anywhere. This is about to change very soon, thanks to a deal between Netflix and Studio Ghibli. While this news will bring joy to anime lovers all over the world, it is bad news for viewers in the US and Japan.

The 1990s decade had set a pathway for the anime and manga industry, which was further developed by the Big Three. Mobile Suit Victory Gundam was one of the few anime that held the credit for paving the way. The anime followed the military science fiction and the mecha genre, and it felt a mark on every anime fan’s mind with its plot and amazing mecha suits.
The anime featured war and the aftereffects of horrific man-made disasters. Mobile Suit Victory Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino took the reference to the latest war, the Ukraine-Russia war, and made a few interesting comments on Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin. He said if Putin had watched his magnum opus, the Ukraine-Russia war would not have happened in the first place.

Yoshiyuki Tomino, the creator of the Gundam franchise, has suggested that Vladimir Putin’s decision to go to war might have been averted had he watched Sunrise’s 1993 anime series, Mobile Suit V Gundam.
This was revealed by Tomino during an interview with the Summer 2023 edition of Great Mechanic G, where he talked about the relevance of V Gundam in the context of the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War. He highlighted the uncanny parallels between the events depicted in the anime and the geopolitical realities of today.
“…It’s been a year since the war between Ukraine and Russia started. To me, V Gundam feels so on the nose it’s like it’s entirely about Putin’s war. If Putin had watched V Gundam, I think he definitely wouldn’t have gone to war.“
The interview delved deeper into Tomino’s analysis of modern warfare, drawing comparisons between Putin’s military actions and historical paradigms.

Last week, Imagica Infos a publishing and advertising business centering on light novels and magazines, and printing giant Dai Nippon Printing (Dnp) had announced a collaboration to produce “light anime”, a format which includes animating works with about 10% of that of a traditional television anime.
Following the reveal regarding Light Anime, veteran animator Mizue Ogawa, who has worked on Bleach, Attack on Titan and other prominent series, questioned this production method and raised her concerns about how it will change the animation industry.
She wondered if it would be better to read manga or light novels, if the plan was to forcibly push forward the crude “light anime”, which simply relied on partially animated manga panels coupled with voice acting.
“If you’re going to make anime that’s this crude and forced, why don’t you just read manga or novels instead? (A simple question). What is light animation?...

In a recent interview, Yoshiyuki Tomino, the creator of the iconic Gundam anime series, expressed his views on the the anime industry, predicting a possible decline of the boom that the industry is currently experiencing.
Having navigated the world of anime as a freelancer for over 40 years, Tomino said that he appreciated the current improved social status of the anime industry, where animators like him no longer had to make tax officers understand what working in an anime meant.
“In the past, I had a narrow view of the world. I’ve been in the industry as a freelancer for over 40 years, worrying about my mortgage. I remember the annual tax returns. Every time I went to the tax office, I had to explain to the staff what I did in the animation business,” Tomino said. “But now, the tax office doesn’t make fun of me. From this perspective,...

One of the less public-facing key talents at the most publicly scrutinized animation studio in the world, cinematographer Atsushi Okui joined Studio Ghibli in 1993 and has worked on nearly every film from legendary director Hayao Miyazaki since, among them Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and his first feature in a decade, The Boy and the Heron.

In many respects, the ‘80s are highlighted as a boom period for anime, something perhaps unwittingly foretold by Mobile Suit Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino in his famous “Anime New Century Declaration” — a promo event for the “Ms Gundam” compilation movie “Mobile Suit Gundam 1” that unexpectedly drew a crowd numbering in the thousands. The event was emblematic of that coming explosion — anime production reaching newfound scale, finding larger audiences in turn, and maturing as both a medium and an industry. It would be a decade that saw more confident spending, bigger original productions, and a much deeper roster as new creators.
In a retrospective piece about the moment, “Anime: A History” author Jonathan Clements wrote that while Tomino would become a figurehead, his “new world order” would belong to the next generation. It would be a dynamic new age defined by works like the famous Daicon III & IV Opening Animations, made...

The impact and influence of entertainment have been shown to further spawn an epiphany for creativity in the minds of the audiences observing. However, the motivation for formulating a piece of fiction goes beyond just making movies and tv shows. Imagination equally thrives in countless ways, such as the various forms of literature. The comic book industry has seen many people inspired by numerous renditions of media, giving way to folks creating their own forms of storytelling through writing and artwork. Beyond that, with the world being so unique and diverse, many comic writers have taken the opportunity to implement aspects that give their stories more layers to them. In the case of the comic series “Primal Warrior Draco Azul,” we have a successful blend of vibrant spectacle with immersive worldbuilding.

The newest season of the "Gundam" franchise, titled "The Witch From Mercury," has been an odd one. Rather than a tale of interstellar conflict, it's a high school story about teenagers who fight each other in school-sanctioned robot duels. It's the first "Gundam" series to star a female protagonist, and it borrows heavily from the surreal anime classic "Revolutionary Girl Utena." As always, there are fans out there who do not take kindly to that kind of thing — fans who believe that "Witch From Mercury" is a "Gundam" series in name only, made to appeal to casual viewers rather than the serious nerds who make up the franchise's real audience.
These embittered "Gundam" fans are wrong. "Witch From Mercury" is hardly the first weird "Gundam." In fact, "Gundam" has always been weird. This is a series whose characters have names like "Full Frontal" and "Biscuit Griffon." It is a series...

"Gundam" is finally coming back after a long seven-year journey! "The Witch From Mercury" marks the return of one of Japan's biggest media franchises.
A massive 43-year-old franchise with over 50 installments across film and TV, it can be quite daunting to even attempt to enter the world of Yoshiyuki Tomino's epic robot space opera. Whether you're a returning fan or brand new to the very idea of what a Gundam is, we're here to answer every question you might have about the new show and the franchise it is aiming to revitalize.
So, first up, what is "Gundam" exactly? To give it its full name, "Mobile Suit Gundam" is a long-running series focusing on people capable of piloting Gundams, the most advanced, giant humanoid mecha — also called Mobile Suits. This is rather standard stuff for the mecha genre of anime, but what set Tomino's world apart -- and helped...

"Mobile Suit Gundam" is one of the biggest and most beloved anime franchises ever. Yet as exquisitely crafted as it is, and as profound as Yoshiyuki Tomino's anti-war story is, there is one thing the franchise could never escape: that no matter how often you tell the audience that kid soldiers fighting with giant robots is a bad thing, seeing them fight is pretty cool.

From giant apes to giant robots: Filmmaker Jordan Vogt-Roberts (“Kong: Skull Island”) is set to direct and produce a live-action adaptation of wildly popular anime series “Gundam” for Legendary and Netflix, the streamer announced on Monday.
Famed comic book writer Brian K. Vaughan (“Y: The Last Man”) is writing the screenplay and will executive produce. Legendary’s Cale Boyter is overseeing the project, along with Sunrise — the Japanese animation studio behind the “Gundam” franchise. Legendary will distribute the film theatrically in China.
There is no word on what the story will be for the film, but there certainly is a wealth of material to choose from. First launched in 1979 as a TV series from Yoshiyuki Tomino, “Mobile Suit Gundam” initially struggled to gain an audience, but grew in popularity through the 1980s due to a wide proliferation of adaptations across animated feature films, novels, manga, toys, models and video games.

Lost and Runaways screenwriter Brian K. Vaughn has been hired by Legendary Entertainment to write the script from the live-action Gundam film that they are producing. The film will be based on the popular Mecha anime franchise that was created by Sunrise.
I’m a big fan of the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise and I’ve been wanting to see a live-action adaptation of it for years! This could looks so freakin’ badass with today’s filmmaking technology! We got a little tease of what Gundam would look like on the big screen thanks to Ready Player One.
The 1979 series was created and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, and next month marks its 40th anniversary! During a previous interview with Sunrise President Yasuo Miyakawa, he said that Sunrise has maintained almost all of the control over the film adaptation. That control was a requirement for Sunrise to agree to the project.

Exclusive: Famed comic book creator and New York Times bestselling author Brian K. Vaughan has signed on to write the screenplay for Gundam, the first live-action film based on the popular Mecha anime and science fiction media franchise created by Sunrise. The project hails from Legendary Entertainment, in a co-production with Sunrise. Vaughan, best known for creating comic book series like Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, and Runaways, will also serve as an executive producer on the pic.
Next month marks the 40th anniversary of Mobile Suit Gundam, the mecha anime series that launched the Gundam success story as both a media and toy franchise. That 1979 series, created and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, was a middling success when first aired but then won over an impassioned fan following through reruns and a popular tie-in toy line.

An android actress, giant anime robots and the legacy of Akira Kurosawa were among the offerings at this year’s Tokyo International Film Festival (Tiff), which as always presented an interesting mix of old and new.
Android Geminoid-f – created by robotics expert Hiroshi Ishiguro – is an eerily convincing lead actress in Koji Fukada’s Sayonara, which received its world premiere in Tiff’s competition section.
Both Geminoid-f and Japanese-speaking actress Bryerly Long are reprising their roles from the short stage-play from which the film is adapted.
Although set in a near-future Japan contaminated by radiation, the film is more of a riff on mortality and the fear of death than a comment on the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
More startling than the story was the range of emotions that Geminoid-f was able to convey. “Sometimes robots can express more than humans,” said Ishiguro at a post-screening event.

Check out this amazing series of minimalist style art inspired by the mech designs of Mobile Suit Gundam. Mobile Suit Gundam was an anime series back in the late '70s and early '80s that was created by Yoshiyuki Tomino. This was such a great series, and this set of art created by Matthew Raffaele is such a cool tribute. Thanks to XombieDirge for the tip!

Transformers: More than Meets the Eye # 21
Written by James Roberts

And so we come lurching to the climactic finale of the “Remain in Light” story arc, possibly best described as the “season finale” of “Transformers: More than Meets the Eye”, bringing things more or less to a close, before the big “Dark Cybertron” even kicks off.
It’s almost impossible to discuss the events of the issue at all without spoilers, except to say that everything works out well for all parties involved, except the bad guys of course. Which really, when you get to the heart of it, is the big problem with the issue, and by extension, the storyline as a whole. Remember, this is the story that solicits teased would “Change the Lost Light forever”, or words to that effect. But in actual fact, when the story wraps up, surprisingly...

I was looking forward to seeing this unusual co-production from Russia, Japan and Canada! Everything about this project sounds like a lot of fun. It has a wild soundtrack by DJ Krush, beautiful artwork by 4C (the company that also did the animation for “Tekkonkinkreet” and “The Animatrix”) and a crazy story with occult Nazis and Russian soldiers. What more can you ask for? It had its international premiere as part of the big Manga Night on the Piazza Grande, that started off with Yoshiyuki Tomino’s “Mobil Suit Gundam 1” from 1981. After 2 ½ hours of old school animation, I was pretty anxious to finally see Yoshiharu Ashino’s debut as a director.
The story is simple, though it consists of many elements: World War 2 has reached its peak and Russia...

I have yet to go through everything, so I'm just posting this as of now.
