MaryAnn’s quick take… A movie as thrillingly weird as its protagonist. We are totally enrapt by the wonder and the terror of her imagination, and the power of it to create joy and solace. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about girls and women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) women’s participation in this film

I Kill Giants is not a fantasy movie. It’s a drama about fantasy: about the power of stories to help us understand our fears and cope with our anxieties and escape from our pain, at least for a little while. But in a rare creative conjunction, this movie is as thrillingly weird as its protagonist, 12-year-old Barbara Thorson (Madison Wolfe: The Conjuring 2, Joy). We have no doubt...

While the main creative force behind I Kill Giants is unquestionably screenwriter Joe Kelly, who adapted his own limited comic series of the same name that he co-created with artist J.M. Ken Niimura, director Anders Walter’s past work including his Oscar-winning short, Helium, shows he’s hardly a stranger to the source material’s subject matter. Kelly and Niimura found success creating a work that reflects what happens when a child uses their imagination to confront a still abstract understanding of death.
It’s no surprise then that the two films I thought about while watching this adaptation were A Monster Calls and Where the Wild Things Are. I Kill Giants plays like a hybrid of sorts that’s just as cognizant of keeping things as darkly resonant. It’s okay for a family film targeting an audience that would call its lead (Madison Wolfe’s Barbara Thorson) a...

I Kill Giants, produced by Chris Columbus (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) and directed by Academy Award-winning director Anders Walter, is based on the critically acclaimed graphic novel by Image Comics’ Joe Kelly and J.M. Ken Niimura. The film tells the story of Barbara Thorson (Madison Wolfe), a teenage girl who escapes the realities of a troubled school and family life by retreating into a magical realm fighting evil ‘giants’ – colossal monsters who attack her quiet coastal town.
With the help of her new friend Sophia (Sydney Wade) and her school counsellor (Zoe Saldana), Barbara will learn to face her fears – tackling the mean bullies at school, coming to terms with her difficult home life and battling the mythic giants that threaten her world.

Fear is a powerful weapon that can be used against us in a multitude of ways. For Barbara Thorson, her fear comes in the form of hulking beasts, who're determined to break her spirit, by reminding her of one harsh reality at a time. Fortunately for Barbara, she's stronger than she thinks, and soon she'll discover that a magical hammer named Kovaleski isn't the only... Read More...

As anticipation builds for Anders Walter's adaption of the graphic novel I Kill Giants the official poster dropped today and it is a real attention grabber. If you do not know what the graphic novel is about surely you want to know what the wee girl with the glowing glowing hammer wants to do against that giant in the distance. I will even forgive the go-to blue/orange hues and glowing embers this time around. With the help of her new friend Sophia (Sydney Wade) and her school counselor (Zoe Saldana), Barbara learns to...

The first trailer for the film based on the graphic novel I Kill Giants has arrived, and it looks interesting. Take a look at the trailer, and continue on below for more about the film:
The film follows a troubled teen named Barbara Thorson (Madison Wolfe). Barbara has some real issues in her life that she copes with by fighting giants that no one else believes exists. From the description, it sounds as though this film will be a Pan's Labyrinth sort of tale. That's not a bad thing, although I kind of felt like that's where things were heading about halfway through this trailer.
The film stars Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy, Avatar), Madison Wolfe (The Conjuring 2, Joy), and Imogen Poots (Green Room).
The film will debut in theaters and VOD and Digital HD on March 23, 2018.
