The phenomenon of sleep paralysis and possible associated horrors is slipping into genre film more often of late. In 2011 we had Filip Tegstedt's excellent horror laced family drama, Marianne, and last year we were introduced to Rodney Ascher's haunting documentary The Nightmare. It was only a matter of time before someone went all Elm Street with the premise and made a straight up horror film about it. Cue The Man In The Shadows from Canadian filmmaker Joshua Fraiman. Rachel Darwin (Sarah Louise Jurgens, "Covert Affairs") is pregnant, shackled, giving birth to something terrible, attended to by a dark man in a brimmed hat. She struggles to wake, opens her eyes and he is there. The next day she finds out she's not alone, many others...

Here at Twitch we sure have some love for the Swedish horror drama Marianne. Director Filip Tegstedt's first film, written by himself, tells the story of Krister, a schoolteacher who is driven insane every night by what seems to be a ghost. Is it a nightmare, a dream brought on by a guilty conscience? Or a "Nightmare", a legendary supernatural creature out to get him? After its world premiere at Fantasia in 2011, Kurt Halfyard had the following to say in his review: A film that subtly uses the language of domestic drama to craft a realistic and true horror film is a brave thing to attempt with a first feature. Somebody, please, get Guillermo del Toro in contact with Philip Tegstedt because here is...

Not everyone knows what online piracy has done to indie filmmakers, so this week we have a pair of stories that try to shed some light into dark recesses. First, horror filmmaker Filip Tegstedt outlines the saga of futilely trying to find a distributor for a movie that had already been pirated, and then Cinedigm‘s Jill Calcaterra explains the company’s new distribution partnership with BitTorrent. Plus, Geoff and I offer up the Top Best Greatest Five Movies with which to celebrate the end of Doma. Yes, it’ll be fabulous. One of our favorite little indie films to emerge from the festival circuit recently was Filip Tegstedt's supernatural laced family drama Marianne. And though things have been in limbo since its festival run, the film is finally starting to pop up on VOD platforms. Starting this week in the UK on June 14th the film will be playing in Hi Def over at The Horror Show. The life of Krister has become an unending nightmare, ever since his wife's death. His mental health is deteriorating, not least because he is plagued by night terrors, his fitful slumber intruded upon by a mysterious woman with dark designs on him. He initially believes these visions are a symptom of serious post-traumatic shock. Krister does, after all, have a...

Filip Tegstedt's Marianne stretches the definition of a horror movie by quite some way; there's only one recurring supernatural element and it's left very much open to interpretation as to whether the main character is imagining the whole thing, to the point of openly mocking him. Yet it's not really about the scares, more about the tragedy of a man's psyche visibly imploding - the story of someone who did a terrible thing, where it's slowly revealed to us just how terrible, and how much worse he makes the situation by trying to put everything right without thinking about it first.Krister (Tomas Hedengran) is a teacher living in a quiet Swedish suburb, painstakingly trying to put his life back together after it's taken a particularly...

The fest opens with an ambitious Minneapolis-based move: Tyler Jensen’s 30 Films 30 Days. The Arizona Underground Film Festival keeps picking and screening the best in world extreme cinema and their fourth annual edition, which will run Sep. 16-24 in Tucson is no exception, compiling outrageous cult epics from countries such as Japan, Switzerland and Cuba; as well as some local nastiness produced in the fest’s own backyard.
The fest opens with Jack Perez’s Some Guy Who Kills People, a comedy thriller executive produced by John Landis and starring Kevin Corrigan as a loser who gets sadistic revenge on those he feels have wronged him.
While the opening night film is a big name affair, Auff is also celebrating local freaky film fare with films such as the film noir Sweet Love and Deadly, directed by Paul Clinco; and the horror comedy Dick Night, directed by Andy Viner.

The Fantasia Film Festival is officially over and we here at Sound On Sight will always remember it as the year of brilliant first time features with the likes of Bellflower, Absentia, Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark, You Are Here, Beyond The Black Rainbow, Attack The Block and Retreat, to name a few. The final audience numbers are yet to be confirmed, but Fantasia estimates it has welcomed more than 100,000 audience members in the past three and a half weeks. 150 international directors, actors and producers came to present their films and we had a great time meeting new faces and drinking the nights away with some of the filmmakers. I can’t stress how fun the festival is and highly I recommend our international readers who love genre cinema to one day travel here to Montreal, and check it out.

In the fifteen years of the Fantasia Film Festival, I can’t recall any filmmaker who has visited Montreal and remained for the entirety of the fest (three and half weeks) – until now. Swedish filmmaker Filip Tegstedt has graced us with his presence from day one and has quickly become one of the more familiar faces of the fest, a new member to the Fantasia family. He comes with his feature debut Marianne, making its World Premiere and winning praise from critics and audiences alike. It’s safe to say that he has charmed his way into everyone’s hearts, with his encyclopedic knowledge of film, good manners and drunken karaoke singing. I had the pleasure of meeting Filip at the start of the festival and was fortunate enough to interview the director about his physiological thriller. Marianne is a clever, a strong, thoughtful and well-written family drama that plays...

Although I reviewed the film a bit earlier, in the initial goings on at the Fantasia Film Festival, the Swedish horror-drama Marianne is getting its World Premiere today in Montreal at the J.A. de Sève Cinema. If you are in town, you should make some time on your schedule for it. Indeed, the debut film of Filip Tegstedt is both a discovery and a gem on the lengthy docket of Canada's largest genre film festival. Looking for something slightly different in the horror film world? There is no CGI, no gore, and no jumpscares on display here; just a good idea, and complex characters in a dramatically sound horror picture. Don't just trust me on this. Our own Scott Weinberg is also on board in loving this little...

A good portion of American indie horror flicks deal with an outside (generally malevolent) force that impacts a person or a family unit. Lately I'm noticing a proclivity in smaller foreign genre flicks to go the other way: how a mundane "everyday" tragedy is the impetus for the terrors at hand. That's a basic way of saying that the recent Swedish thriller Marianne is a dramatic piece, first and foremost, and a rather quietly engrossing one, too. But what's most interesting is how the flick turns from domestic tragedy to legitimate horror tale without cutting any corners, tipping its hand, or cheating its audience. First-time writer/director Filip Tegstedt is not interested in an external "monster"...

Fantasia also made the first announcement about the films that will be part of this 15th edition's line-up.
People can see the anthology film Theatre Bizarre. This coproduction between Canada, France, Germany, the UK, the USA reunites Richard Stanley (Hardware), Karim Hussain (La belle bête), Douglas Buck (Cutting Moments), Buddy Giovinazzo (Life Is Hot in Cracktown), David Gregory (Plague Town) and Tom Savini, as directors.
The festival will also hold the world premier of The Wicker Tree, from Robin Hardy. Moreover, a book launch is also expected because The Wicker Tree is based on the novel Cowboys for Christ, by Hardy.
As for a Canadian premiere, Ryoo Seung-wan's The Unjust will be screened. Besides, Ryoo will be invited by the festival's organizers to teach choreography for action films.

I was pretty excited after seeing the teaser trailer for Filip Tegstedt’s upcoming horror film Marianne and considering the amount of attention the trailer received, I wasn’t alone in my excitement.
The first teaser for the film, which stars Thomas Hedengran and Peter Stormare, was beautiful and creepy and this second teaser follows a very similar set-up, using images and music to build tension. The images here are even odder than the first but you definitely get the feeling that something is amiss.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? The Return of the Moonwalker Trailer Note: I can’t explicitly endorse getting high by way of huffing some rubber cement but, if you happen...

For his debut as writer/director, Filip Tegstedt chose to make a psychological horror movie because “there really haven’t been that many good Swedish horror films” and really, good horror films are generally hard to find anywhere never mind limiting that to Sweden.
So for his first, Tegstedt rounded up some familiar faces and set off to shoot Marianne, a small town psychological horror drama set in Östersund with roots in Swedish folklore which “tells of a man’s struggle to deal with his inner conflicts following the passing of his wife.”
I was already curious about this production and then I read that the film stars the formidable Peter Stormare (one of my favourites) and Thomas Hedengran. I didn’t need any additional information to add this to my watch list but it helps a great deal that the trailer is gorgeous and effective on creep factor.
Trailer after the break.
