There are many things that make Steven Spielberg's 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial' -- thirty years old this year -- a magical masterpiece: a sensitive script, fantastic special effects (it's often easy to forget the title star is a mechanical puppet), John Williams' uplifting score. But one of the most over-looked aspects is the cast.
Eschewing big name stars and established child actors, Spielberg discovered a raft of talent, young and old, that do much to make 'E.T.' such an emotional experience. Here are their 'E.T.' stories and what happened next....
E.T. is 30 years old - hard to believe, but true
Henry Thomas (Elliott Taylor)
That was then: "I used to think 'If I mess this up, what's going to happen?'" recalls Henry Thomas about his days as the lead in 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial'. "'Are they going fire me? I'm nine years old.

Like most horror freaks of a certain age (and younger), I grew up on a steady diet of Stephen King horror novels. (Yes, also Clive Barker and Robert McCammon, but we're getting off-base here.) But then in 1987 I grabbed his latest book, which was a fantasy story that Mr. King wrote for his daughter, Tabitha. It was (and still is) called The Eyes of the Dragon, and it's a book I've re-read at least three times over the years. According to Entertainment Weekly's Inside TV, the adaptation will be penned by Michael Taylor and Jeff Vintar (I, Robot, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within). Mr. Taylor has written for just about every science-fiction TV series out there, plus he does have some experience with Kingly adaptations: he produced and wrote several episodes of the...

Stephen King’s Eyes Of The Dragon is coming to SyFy in the near future, as either a TV series or TV movie, according to Shock Till You Drop. With the success of Game Of Thrones and the return of Middle-Earth on the horizon, fantasy is back in the limelight. Written in 1987, the book has all the staples of fantasy lore you need: kings, towers, murder and presumably, dragons. Most King fans have been waiting for news on Roland and the tower for a long time, but unfortunately, this is a different story. Stephen King likes his towers and characters named Roland. Michael Taylor and Jeff Vintar (writer for I, Robot) are tasked with the adaptation that should have a killer logo, if they model it after the above book cover.

Los Angeles — B doesn't just stand for broadcasting at ABC.
The network uses the letter as an abbreviation for "bitch" in the title of its new Wednesday night sitcom "Don't Trust the B---- in Apt. 23." ABC's prime-time soap "Gcb" is based on the book "Good Christian Bitches," although it says the B actually stands for "belles."
Both shows, which are about women and aimed at female audiences, may have started out with the complete B-word in their titles, but the network abbreviated it before introducing the shows to advertisers.
Paul Lee, president of the ABC Entertainment Group, said in January that "on broadcast television, as it turns out, that isn't a word you want to use in the title."
Broadcast standards allow the word on TV, and its use has tripled in the last decade, but these are the first American shows to tease with B's in their titles.
Is it just coincidence?...

Monsanto, the agriculture biotech company maligned in such docs as Food, Inc. and King Corn, found renewed opposition this month with the launch of an online petition gone viral called “Tell Obama to Cease Fda Ties to Monsanto.” The petition protests the president’s 2009 appointment of the company’s former VP, Michael Taylor, to the position of senior advisor to the Fda. That this years-late call to action has inspired more than 380,000 signatures attests to the toxicity of this particular marriage between government and a multinational corporation.
If you’ll remember, Monsanto is the company that brought us Ddt and Agent Orange, both of which were banned at some point for their harmful effects on people and the environment. As the world’s largest producer of genetically modified (Gm) crops, the company has achieved its position through a means of strong-arm tactics, ambitious mergers, and, as the petition points out,...

Fireflies in the Garden
Directed by: Dennis Lee
Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe, Emily Watson, Julia Roberts
Running Time: 1 hr 29 mins
Rating: R
Due Out: February 7, 2012
Plot: A tragic accident befalls the Taylor family in a time that is meant for celebration. This leads to old demons with Michael (Reynolds) and his father (Dafoe).
Who’S It For? Do you like family drama? I’m not talking about the kind where you look back years later and laugh about it. I’m talking about family drama that thrashes you around for years leaving you feeling weighed down.
Movie:
Coming home is hard for some people and Michael Taylor (Reynolds) fits that bill easy enough. Coming home to a sudden tragedy is near impossible. Surrounded by really good, intense family drama is the feeling of “near impossible,” but that doesn’t stop Fireflies in the Garden being a solid film.
It deserves better.

HollywoodNews.com: There is a vibrant tradition in American cinema of films that tackle compelling social issues. Seminal films, including “To Kill a Mockingbird,” “In the Heat of the Night,” “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” and “Norma Rae” remind everyone that the smallest acts of courage can inspire social change. This tradition continues with the recent film “The Help,” which examines the relationships between black maids and their white employers in 1960s Mississippi. The film reminds audiences that popular culture has the power to affect change and illuminate the plight of those without a voice.
About “The Help”: Based on one of the most talked about books in years and a #1 New York Times best-selling phenomenon, “The Help” stars Emma Stone (“Easy A”) as Skeeter, Academy Award®–nominated Viola Davis (“Doubt”) as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny—three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s,...

On a surface level, Fireflies in the Garden looks like a film that could easily be ignored amongst the myriad of options that filmgoers have to choose from. Cheesy tagline, a poster reminiscent of a Lifetime Channel movie, and Ryan Reynolds with a beard, which means he'll be serious and not that funny. As life should have taught us all by now, you never judge a book by its cover and Fireflies in the Garden is a good example why. Illustrating the sad and unfortunate way that life has a tendency of being when it shows a family what's really important, this film examines how one family deals with the pain of a sudden loss -- the loss of the one piece of the family that didn't deserve to leave in the first place.

Though he’ll eventually grow up to resemble a certain Sexiest Man Alive, young Michael Taylor (Cayden Boyd) is still a timid, bespectacled kid in this scene from Fireflies in the Garden, the Julia Roberts/Ryan Reynolds drama (out Oct. 14) about a novelist poised to publish his seemingly perfect family’s dirty laundry. Reynolds is the grown-up writer, who still has unresolved issues with his domineering father (Willem Dafoe), and Roberts plays his gentle mother. In this flashback scene, Michael bonds with his young Aunt Jane (Hayden Panettiere) over sports cards, specifically a certain dreamy Chicago Cubs second basemen. Take a look.

Adelaide-based Rising Sun Pictures has confirmed it will deliver VFX for the Warner Bros. blockbuster Green Lantern.
“The sustained strength of the Australian dollar is not helping attract lucrative, longer term contracts to our shores. Rising Sun is pleased to have brought a fraction of the Green Lantern spend back to Australia,” said CEO Michael Taylor.
According to Taylor, a sliding rebate scale locked in with the dollar exchange rate (to a maximum of 30 percent) would help re-position Australia internationaly. Toronto -- Peace Arch Entertainment has put its Toronto studio complex Dufferin Gate Productions up for sale.
The 72,000 square foot facility, with five production offices, 16,000 square feet in studio space and three post production suites, was purchased in 2007, and now returns to the open market with a $3.95 million asking price.
Peace Arch president of TV Michael Taylor said the sale comes as the Toronto-based company continues to draw back from volume movie production to focus more on TV production and movie distribution in Canada, the U.S. and other foreign markets.
During the 1990s, Dufferin Gate was filled with TV movie shoots for Showtime Networks, as well as movie and TV work for Paramount, Columbia/Tristar and Granada Television.
In recent years, Dufferin Gate has mostly hosted local Canadian shoots, including CBC's "Little Mosque on the Prairies."
