As The Voice completed its Season 24 Playoffs Tuesday evening, John Legend’s team members competed to remain in the contest after their coach cut his lineup in half. Did he make better selections than, say, Niall Horan (whose elimination of Alexa Wildish is sure to irritate me all the way through the finals) and Gwen Stefani (who kept Bias and Tanner Massey instead of Stee and Rudi)? Read on and find out!
Azán, “Adorn” — Grade: A | I’m giving John’s Super Save artist an “A” for her Miguel cover even though I kinda wasn’t crazy about it. She sang beautifully.

Joyce Wrice’s Overgrown resembles a fresh breath of air that we all needed to take in 2021. The Southern California singer’s debut album draws on the classic R&b of the late Nineties and early 2000s, showing the range that fans of the genre were accustomed to seeing from artists like Aaliyah, Brandy, and Mariah Carey, and combines that sound with modern songwriting and guest appearances from some of today’s rising artists. With the help of her A&r, Eddie Fourcell, and executive producer D’Mile, who is known...

We are thrilled that the Seashell made it to the Super 8 competing on April 21 episode of “The Masked Singer.” We’ve been a fan of hers since she made her debut as part of Group A on the season 5 premiere on March 10. Back then she rocked the house with her cover of “Listen to Your Heart” by Roxette. She returned in Week 3 and impressed with her version of “Confident” by Demi Lovato. And she secured her place in the quarter-final last week with her rendition of “Tell Me Something Good” by Rufus feat. Chaka Khan.
The judges are fans of the Seashell as well. But we don’t think they are right with any of their guesses. The Seashell is not Ashanti, Keke Palmer, Alicia Silverstone or Tamia.
We’ve rewatched all of the Seashell performances as well as her clues videos. Keep reading for “The Masked Singer” spoilers, including...

Last summer, you couldn’t walk a block in Brooklyn without hearing Pop Smoke’s “Welcome to the Party” or “Dior” blasting out of an apartment or passing car. Now, five months after the 20-year-old phenom was shot and killed during a home invasion—an incalculable loss for New York rap—he remains the toast of the city. Since late May, his songs have been repurposed as rallying cries at Black Lives Matter demonstrations, for reasons that have to do with both his story and his sound. He grew up...

When Mariah Carey sang about everlasting love on 1996’s “Always Be My Baby,” she probably couldn’t have envisioned its rebirth as “Project Baby,” a story of squalor and perseverance by 24-year-old Mobile, Alabama, rapper Rylo Rodriguez. “Catch a DUI, these bills driving us crazy,” he sings in place of Carey’s classic chorus. “But they don’t feel me, ’cause I’m just a project baby.”
“I was going through old beats from back in the day,” Rylo says over the phone. “Back in the day, you’d watch 106 & Park and shit,...

Mariah Carey. Tamia. Ruth B. Leon Bridges… And, now, Rylo Rodriguez.
For the last year, in a small but substantial corner of YouTube, a Mobile, Alabama rapper has furiously sought to place himself within a lineage of R&b and soul music, despite not possessing any of the technical vocal qualities — range, diction, consistently hitting notes — that tie this disparate group of singers together.
In the hands of Rodriguez, Carey’s “Always Be My Baby” is re-contextualized as a tale about poverty and violence titled “Project Baby.” The song, from the melody to its cadence,...

Queen Naija walks barefoot on the sand in her new acoustic performance video for “Butterflies.” The song appeared in July on the singer’s major-label debut Ep.
The sound of “Butterflies” evokes Tamia in the “Officially Missing You” era: Soft, precisely articulated guitar licks and direct expressions of affection — “I just wanna know you would catch me if I fall/ If you tell me, ‘yeah,’ boy, I might just risk it all.” Queen Naija really goes for it vocally, belting out key lines in a way she avoided on her breakout hit,...

Alina Baraz has released just two EPs of her feathery, crazily calm music — like R&B buried under a layer of permafrost — but hasn’t produced anything that could be considered a mainstream hit. And yet she has amassed over 1.2 billion streams, many more than artists who are multiple albums into major label careers. Her success is one of the clearest signs of the chasm that still separates the streaming-verse and the world of old-school commercial pop.
To hear her tell it, Baraz was a star before she was a singer.

The legendary arranger-writer-producer Quincy Jones has an extensive arsenal of go-to aphorisms. One concerns the difficult business of matching the right tune to the right singer. “The song is the power,” Jones told Rolling Stone last year. “A great song can make the worst singer in the world a star. And a bad song can’t be saved by the three greatest singers in the world.”
This is cruel but mostly true, even if you write your own songs, and it comes to mind when listening to the new Tamia album Passion Like Fire.

Grant Hill has just retired after playing 19 seasons in the NBA and he is wasting no time in getting into family activities. The AP reports that Saturday night (June 8), Hill was on hand to support his wife Tamia as she performed a concert in New York.
At the Highline Ballroom in Manhattan, Hill and fellow NBA-er Amar'e Stoudemire sat in the VIP section and cheered on Tamia as she performed an R&B set for a couple hundred people in the venue.
Tamia reportedly acknowledged Hill before singing "Still," saying, "We're celebrating almost 15 years of marriage."
The 38-year-old singer was up for two Grammys in 2013 for her fifth studio album, "Beautiful Surprise." They were her fifth and sixth Grammy nominations overall since her 1998 self-titled debut album.

Having a legendary producer like Quincy Jones for one's debut single is a rare opportunity for most aspiring artists. Luckily for Canadian-bred singer-songwriter Tamia, Jones crafted her 1995 hit "You Put a Move On My Heart," which became a top ten R&B hit and earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
Seventeen years later, Tamia aims to recapture that chart-topping success with her June release, Beautiful Surprise.
During a candid interview with The Huffington Post, Tamia revealed details behind the album, sustaining her marriage to Grant Hill, her thoughts on the "Basketball Wives" franchise, and her battle with multiple sclerosis.
What has been the response to your new single, "Beautiful Surprise"?
It's awesome! Today I just found out that it was the number one most-added at Urban A/C, so I'm excited. It feels good to sort of get back to music.

"Aw, man, it was a mission, something I had to do, something Jackson asked me to do himself," Pain said at Lil Wayne's welcome-home party in Miami. "So it was basically a mission carried out by Quincy Jones. I think it's gonna be cool, 'cause, you know, before Jackson passed away, he was gonna do a tribute album of himself. It was gonna be everybody remaking his songs, and he was gonna be featured on the songs.
