Following a phenomenon cannot be easy.
When Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick, the creators of Blair Witch, found themselves on the receiving end of a tsunami of plaudits they wisely chose to avoid cashing in and side stepped Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows, and all but disappeared from the film industry for many years. Perhaps the bar had been set too high and they feared chasing the Hollywood lightning again, but the rumours that a third Blair Witch film is on the cards seems to bring their decade long hiatus from the woods to an end.
Not so Oren Peli, whose Paranormal Activity has won him enormous praise, as The Hollywood Reporter have tonight reported that his follow up, Area 51, has not only completed shooting but Paramount have leapt at the chance to distribute the film.
As previously reported Peli plans to use the found footage device to »

Is there a remake of The Blair Witch Project currently in the works? According to a strange casting call that recently went out across the web, there most certainly is. However, all signs would seem to indicate that this project is not connected to Artisan Entertainment, the production company that owns the rights to the Blair Witch franchise. A director named Stacy Hopkins is setting up shop in Glasgow, Scotland, and the casting call looks something like this: Dennis Hither, Michael Adams and Donald Walker, experienced filmmakers, set out to shoot a documentary about a local legend, the Blair Witch. We seek amateur/semi professional actors/actresses to play the roles of three experienced film makers, and females to play Michael’s girl friend. There are 4 roles available, with Dennis Hither being the lead role. We require mostly Canadian and U.S actors/actresses, all others should also apply. The »

There's a casting call, a shooting schedule... But is The Blair Witch Remake a proper revisit of one of the greatest horror films ever made (yes, it is) or just a low-key side project? Original directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez have recently been talking up the possibility of a third Blair Witch movie - to patch the holes opened up by the disappointing sequel Book Of Shadows. But a casting notice seen by Slashfilm suggests that The Blair Witch Remake is more likely to be a first-time feature cheekily trading off the Myrick &...

We ran across an interesting film heading into production in Glasgow, Scotland that will be directed by Stacy Hopkins. While I'm pretty damn sure it's Not an actual remake, shooting will begin soon on The Blair Witch Remake, a film about three experienced filmmakers who set out to shoot a documentary about a local legend. While it sounds like an actual remake to Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez's groundbreaking 1999 film, I'm not exactly sure how it could be. I'm guessing it's more of a faux remake and a play on the original film. More details as they come in. »

After the incredible success of the ultra-low budget Paranormal Activity sparked sequel rumors, the co-creator of the original "shakycam" success, The Blair Witch Project, Eduardo Sánchez, emerged to talk about the possibility of making another Blair Witch.
Sánchez and co-creator Daniel Myrick declined to work on Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 because they "didn't want to be seen as one-trick ponies, but Sánchez admits to being "jealous" of Paranormal Activity and its creator, Oren Peli.
I'm happy for the guy ... but at the same time, there's the feeling that, man, I could have done this. It would have been different and might not have been as good. But I know how to make these films. To me it's like, man, maybe I should go back and kind of milk this one more time.
And, apparently, Sánchez and Myrick do plan to reunite on another Blair Witch movie, though it »

The Blair Witch Project co-director Eduardo Sánchez has admitted that he is jealous of Paranormal Activity's success. Speaking to The Star, Sánchez explained that the record-breaking box office performance of Oren Peli's low-budget supernatural film is part of the reason why he and Daniel Myrick are plotting to make Blair Witch 3. "I wouldn't be completely honest with you if I said I wasn't jealous of Paranormal Activity," he said. "I'm happy for the guy... but at the same time, there's the feeling that, man, I could have done this. "It would have been different and might not have been as good. (more) »

Perhaps the least surprising news to hit the news radar for a while, The Hollywood Reporter has a story on the inevitability of a sequel to Oren Peli’s scarefest Paranormal Activity, and quotes Viacom CEO Phillipe Dauman’s summation of the film as ‘one of those surprise hits that comes along only rarely‘.
This was, of course, in the middle of his Scrooge McDuck-esque jumping and rolling about in the piles of coin the Halloween hit has pulled in for Paramount.
So, while this is no surprise what does the future hold for the latest Hollywood horror franchise? It will be impossible to recreate the impact the original had, with the home movie documentary already a mainstream style, and chances are the next dose of Paranormal Activity will have only the slightest thread to Peli’s film.
It would be folly indeed to recreate a Book of Shadows style follow up, »

Looking to literally re-capitalize on a filmmaking style they re-invented back in 1999, The Blair Witch Project writer-directors, Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, are this close to returning to the big screen with another Blair Witch installment – one that could potentially reunite the original film's stars, Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams. Speaking to the Toronto Star, Sanchez says that the new film would forget Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows ever happened (thank god), and it would pick up right where the original left off. He adds, "We're at the step where we're about to pitch to Lionsgate, which owns the movie rights now. It's pretty much up to them. They can completely squash it or greenlight it." Considering the smash success of Paranormal...

When filmmakers Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez wrote and directed The Blair Witch Project, which debuted in theaters ten years ago this past summer, they ushered in a sub-genre of filmmaking that was part reliant on the power of suggestion, part pre-reality TV, and part old-fashioned exploitation fright film.
Certainly, Blair Witch was a phenomenon in 1999, coming right at the end of perhaps the most pioneering decade in American independent filmmaking, due at least somewhat to inventive Internet marketing, as the web had just recently blossomed at that time. In essence, the filmmakers took three unknown actors and went into the woods on the East Coast with a camcorder and digital audio tape deck and a rough outline of the various events. Due to their inexpensive basic production, ostensibly, much video footage was shot on location, with a coherent movie being cobbled together subsequently in post. But, inarguably, the sum »

Given the buzz the micro budget Paranormal Activity has been generating it seems entirely logical that the decade old Blair Witch Project might manifest itself once again.
The Toronto Star met up with one of the directors of the 1999 film which ushered in ten years of handheld/webcam based horror films, with Cloverfield and the aforementioned Paranormal Activity two recent examples, and asked Eduardo Sánchez about his plans for the future.
Turning down the unfairly derided Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows, Sanchez and Daniel Myrick recently took a trip back to the location of the original film to gather inspiration for their next project.
The interview is a great read, and Sanchez is controlled about the direction the Blair Witch sequel (i.e. ignoring Book of Shadows completely) may take.

Big shock there, right? A decade after the release of "The Blair Witch Project," we have director Oren Peli's found-footage supernatural thriller "Paranormal Activity" setting Hollywood ablaze with an record setting box office performance in comparison to its miniscule, sub-$15,000 budget. So it's no wonder that the "Blair Witch" creators, in many ways the progenitors of this sort of phenomenon, are looking to bring it back home to their original success story.
We heard back in August from co-directors Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick that "Blair Witch 3" talk was happening, but Sanchez spoke to The Star last week a little more about how those talks are shaping up so far (via Latino Review).
"We're at the step where we're about to pitch to Lionsgate, which owns the movie rights now," Sanchez explained. "It's pretty much up to them. They can completely squash it or greenlight it."

No great surprise this, but with zero-budget word-of-mouth horror phenomenon Paranormal Activity cleaning up at the box office, the creator of a certain other zero-budget word-of-mouth horror phenomenon from a decade ago, is talking a revisit. Anyone for Blair Witch 3?"I wouldn't be completely honest if I said I wasn't jealous of Paranormal Activity," Eduardo Sanchez, co-creator of The Blair Witch Project (along with Daniel Myrick) tells the Toronto Star. "There's the feeling that, I could have done this... I know how to make these films. To me it's like, man, maybe I should go back and kind of milk this one more time."The original Blair Witch, as any fule kno, took Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, Michael C Williams and a camcorder, dumped them in the woods to improvise, and scared the crap out of them for a week. The resulting film, presented as the found footage of a group of missing hikers, »

Thanks to the success of Paranormal Activity, Blair Witch Project creators Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick have begun planning a third installment in the franchise that launched their careers.
Apparently the plan is to pick up where the original left off, ignoring Blair Witch 2 entirely (smart move). While speaking to Toronto's The Star, the scribes admitted that they have already worked up a treatment for a new story, which would involve the original cast in smaller roles.
"We're at the step where we're about to pitch to Lionsgate, which owns the movie rights now," said Sanchez. "It's pretty much up to them. They can completely squash it or greenlight it."

The recent success of Paranormal Activity and the fact that it cost next to nothing versus a sh*tload of profits was sure to draw parallels to its Blair Witch predecessor, and now that studios know the formula still lures wallets in, they're probably keen to take that one out of the mothballs. Or at least one guy truly hopes so. Question is do we as well? Talking to Toronto's The Star recently, co-writer/director Eduardo Sanchez revealed he and partner Daniel Myrick are just about »

Between the success of Paranormal Activity and the buzz about a potential sequel, it.s no wonder that The Blair Witch Project writer/director Eduardo Sánchez is itching to get in on the action. A couple times this year, the subject of a proper Blair Witch Project sequel has been mentioned, and creators Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez have even chimed in on it. Now, with the success of Paranormal Activity, a Blair Witch 3 - which would positively ignore that Book of Shadows even exists - looks closer to becoming a reality than ever.
Speaking to The Toronto Star, Sánchez says, "We're at the step where we're about to pitch to Lionsgate, which owns the movie rights now. It's pretty much up to them. They can completely squash it or greenlight it." If it's the same Lionsgate I think it is, I'd say there's a slim chance this would get squashed.
According to the writer-director, the film would pick up where the first one left off, whatever that means. I don't want to give anything away, but...some key characters didn't make it. Sánchez »

It seems that the success of the box office phenomenon Paranormal Activity has kickstarted the efforts the pioneering indie filmmakers a decade before them. The Toronto Star recently spoke with The Blair Witch Project co-director Eduardo Sanchez, who revealed that he and co-director Daniel Myrick are readying The Blair Witch Project 3. Here's an excerpt from the article.
They're now at the point where they're ready to do a Blair Witch 3, once again sharing writing and directing. They'd pick up from where the original left off, pretending Blair Witch 2 never happened. The duo recently went on a drive through their original Blair Witch haunts, about a half hour from Sánchez's Maryland home, looking for inspiration.
They've worked up a treatment for a new story, which would involve original cast members Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, albeit in smaller roles.
