- Best known as the creator of the TV series "Mr. Peepers" starring Wally Cox and for writing and directing the two films that made Hayley Mills a teenage star: Pollyanna (1960) and The Parent Trap (1961).
- Original drummer for the Firehouse Five Plus Two Dixieland jazz band with Ward Kimball on trombone and Frank Thomas on piano.
- Began his career ushering at the Warner Brothers movie theater on Hollywood Boulevard and later joined the Disney organisation as an office boy, earning $15 a week. By 1938, he had worked his way up the ladder to assistant animator under Ward Kimball which entailed a $5 per week pay rise. He rejoined Disney after wartime service as writer/director.
