The same year that he laid the groundwork for a horror revolution with Black Christmas, Bob Clark released Deathdream (also known as Dead of Night). The 1974 horror film is understandably overshadowed by his influential proto-slasher, but it was on Deathdream that the filmmaker honed his skills that would fuel his masterpiece of the genre: a brooding atmosphere, a calculated pace, a subtle score by Carl Zittrer that’s inseparable from the organic sound design, and even the use of a rocking chair to achieve unease.
Deathdream found Clark re-teaming with writer Alan Ormsby and several other cast and crew members from his 1972 film, Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things. While it suffers from minor pacing issues, Deathdream is significantly more well rounded. Jack McGowan’s cinematography is often flat (albeit an improvement over his work on Dead Things), but the budget – still limited but some five times larger than the...

Midway through Bob Clark’s Deathdream (originally titled Dead of Night), Andy Brooks (Richard Backus) dons a pair of black leather gloves and sunglasses for an upcoming date. Andy displays a suave and calm demeanor that should be familiar to fans of Jean-Pierre Melville’s 1967 film Le Samouraï, which features Alain Delon as the ne plus ultra of psychotic cool; his haircut even recalls that of Steve McQueen in 1968’s Bullitt. However, Andy’s garb has a tactile purpose, concealing as it does his deteriorating skin, which will turn to dust without a replenishing supply of blood. Because of this, Clark’s genre film goes in the opposite direction of peddling cool, as Deathdream shows how a pair of designer shades can only momentarily shield the irreparable physical and psychological scars of war.
That Deathdream is a vehement anti-war statement can only be ascertained gradually, as Andy’s parents, Charles...

While it may not be a Friday, Tuesday the 13th does have a bit of a nice ring to it, too, which makes it a perfect day to add some great genre Blu-rays and DVDs to your home entertainment collections. Scream Factory is doing the (dark) lord’s work yet again this week with their Collector’s Edition of Vice Squad (which I cannot wait to check out) as well as their stunning Steelbooks for both Galaxy of Terror and Forbidden World.
For those of you who enjoy “talkies” (a phrase we coined in our house for our favorite dialogue-heavy films), Radioland Murders arrives on Blu for the first time ever this week, and the third season of Riverdale hits both formats on Tuesday as well.
Other notable releases for August 13th include Avengers: Endgame, The Velocipastor (ahead of its Blu-ray release on September 17th), A Dark Place, Devil Music,...

Out on August 13 in North America from Scream Factory comes Gary Sherman's 1982 film Vice Squad. Filmed on the streets of Los Angeles, Sherman directs Season Hubley as Princess, a prostitute who wants a better life for herself and her daughter. However, there's a sicko on the loose (like any day or night in L.A.), and Gary Swanson, plays Tom Walsh, a cop that wants to nab Ramrod, a vicious pimp, for his crimes against women. Walsh ropes in Princess as bait, and we're off to the races. Of course, there are twists and turns, and perversions of justice, so Ramrod's released...

"Are there any side effects I should know about?" Screen Media Films has debuted an official trailer for a sci-fi horror thriller titled Retina, from filmmaker Carlos Ferrer (Scallop Pond). The film is about a woman who participates in a medical study, but starts to experience nightmares and unusual side effects. One early review calls it a "low-budget but polished little thriller that invokes the spirit of 70s paranoia thrillers like The Parallax View or The Conversation and 90s indie equivalents like Darren Aronofsky’s Pi." Retina stars Lindsay Goranson as April, with Gary Swanson, Ian Temple, Ron Haxton, and Jamie Fedorko. The footage doesn't look that impressive and the poster is way more explosive than the trailer. Take a look. Here's the official trailer (+ two posters) for Carlos Ferrer's Retina, direct from YouTube: A young woman (Lindsay Goranson) participates in a medical study. After a series of nightmares and unusual side effects,...

January 19th has some really unique home entertainment releases that should make fans of cult cinema happier than Jason Voorhees on the first day of summer camp. Scream Factory is debuting William Friedkin’s The Guardian on Blu-ray this week and one of my personal favorites from my childhood, The Ice Pirates, is also getting an HD overhaul, courtesy of the Warner Archive Collection.
Vinegar Syndrome is also keeping themselves busy with a duo of cult classic releases, Nightmare Weekend and Luther the Geek, and for those of you sci-fi TV fans, season one of 12 Monkeys as well as the final season of Continuum arrive on Blu and DVD this Tuesday as well.
The Guardian (Scream Factory, Blu-ray)
William Friedkin, the Academy Award winning director of The Exorcist, delivers a new kind of fairy tale for adults. A handsome young couple finds the perfect live-in babysitter to look after their newborn child.

“Make a move, and make my day!”
If you think that line was said by Clint Eastwood in one of his Dirty Harry films, you’d be mistaken. It was uttered in 1982, the year before Sudden Impact, in director Gary Sherman’s sensationally sleazy Vice Squad, a sordid but exciting look at life on the seedy strip of Hollywood and Sunset Boulevard when the sun goes down. The guys at Destroy The Brain.com usually feature horror fare at their monthly Late Night Grindhouse midnight series, but this weekend’s offering is indeed Vice Squad, a crime film more in line with a pair of Linda Blair movies (Chained Heat and Savage Streets) they showed last year (appropriate since Vice Squad star Wings Hauser dated Linda Blair for several years).
It may be hard out there for a pimp but the opening of Vice Squad where Ramrod, the sadistic pimp played by Hauser,...
