Robin Wright and Demian Bichir on making ‘Land’: ‘We need each other to get through difficult times’
If you end up shooting a movie in the wilds of Canada, it’s always good to have a bear whisperer on set. Robin Wright, who stars and makes her feature directorial debut with the intimate drama “Land,” had such an expert on location 24/7. “We had our set bear,” she recalled during a recent Variety Zoom conversation with the publication’s Jenelle Riley and Wright’s co-star Demian Bichir.
“He showed up every day. He got a hamburger on the craft service table and he decided to come back to McDonald’s drive-through every day. When we would wrap, we would go to our trailers and he would come with us. We would barbecue our food and then he was like ‘Hey, when you are all done, give me a call. I’ll come over and I’m going to lock you and producer [Allyn Stewart] into your trailers because...

“Land,” which premiered at Sundance, tells the story of a broken woman who discovers hope, resilience and human kindness, all in the remote Wyoming mountains. So how did the film’s leading lady come to helm this tale shot through with tragedy and compassion?
Robin Wright, who has directed episodes of “House of Cards” on which she also starred, says she fell in love with “Land” because she wanted to make a film about “the beauty of humanity and how we do need each other and we do need to be connected.”
The film came together after pitching sessions at Cannes a couple years ago, when Focus Features — “the last group of people that came in on our three-day marathon pitch,” she says — grasped her vision.
In the film, Wright stars as a woman who has suffered an unspeakable tragedy, sells everything and moves to a remote cabin in the...

When you have to shoot a film in 29 days, across four seasons, and with the occasional surprise blizzard at 8,000 feet, it’s easier to do it yourself. Robin Wright reached that conclusion with her directorial debut, “Land,” in which she originally had no intention to star. It turned out that the list of actresses who could carry the film, secure the financing, skin game, and make themselves available across many months dwindled to a list of one: Her.
“It was gutsy,” said producer Allyn Stewart (“Sully”). “It wasn’t playing that romantic comedy. It was a taxing, intense, character.”
Wright, of course, is familiar with intense characters after six seasons as the formidable Claire Underwood in “House of Cards.” She also directed herself in 10 of those episodes. “I wasn’t looking to get some sleep, evidently,” she said. “It was so much fun to direct that show, learning while I was doing it.

Robin Wright on Her Feature-Directing Debut and ‘Flying the Nest’ After ‘House of Cards’ (Exclusive)
Robin Wright cut her directing teeth on “House of Cards,” which she describes as “an opportunity to have film school lessons on set each day.” But now, she tells Variety, “I’m flying the nest.”
The actress was looking for her first feature to helm since the final year of the landmark Netflix series. She will head into the wilderness for “Land,” a drama about life off the grid that she said caught her eye and her heart. Production starts this summer in British Columbia, where it will span all four seasons of the year.
Wright was won over by the screenplay from Jesse Chatham and Golden Globe nominee Liz Hannah, but was not supposed to be in front of the camera. “Acting in it wasn’t the initial plan,” she said. “It was due to other people not being available and the clock was ticking. We were losing time.

Washington — Edward Zwick’s new movie, “Trial By Fire,” which will screen in D.C. next week before its May 17 release, is coming out amid a potential shift in the politics surrounding the death penalty.
California Governor Gavin Newsom put a moratorium on the state’s death penalty in March, suspending executions for the more than 700 people on death row. Lawmakers in New Hampshire and Washington state have introduced bills repealing capital punishment.
“Trial by Fire” is the true story of the relationship between a Texas death row inmate, Cameron Todd Willingham (Jack O’Connell), and Elizabeth Gilbert (Laura Dern), who helps lead the effort to try to secure his freedom. Willingham was convicted of the arson-related triple homicide of his children in 1992 and then executed in 2004, despite appeals to then Gov. Rick Perry that investigators used flawed methods to determine that it was a case of arson. Those doubts...

Exclusive: Among the high-profile awards-hopeful premieres at this year’s Telluride Film Festival, from The Old Man and the Gun to The Front Runner to First Man — all coming here for many reasons, including to get a boost in the Oscar race — one new movie from an Oscar-winning producer-director has something more basic in mind: getting a distributor.
That is the case for Ed Zwick and his powerful, humane and important drama Trial By Fire, which stars Jack O’Connell as a Texas man facing the death penalty for the arson killing of his three young daughters, and Laura Dern as a determined woman trying to save his life after lawyers botched his case and put him on Death Row. Tom Hanks is in negotiations to portray airline pilot Captain Chesley 'Sully' Sullenberger in Clint Eastwood's film about 2009's 'Miracle on the Hudson' incident at Warner Bros. Pictures.
Sullenberger and his crew had just taken off from Laguardia Airport when both engines were knocked out by a flock of geese. With no time to return to reach an airport, he made the decision to attempt a water landing on the Hudson - it worked with all 155 people on board surviving.

Eastwood aims to begin shooting in September, but Hanks is currently in the midst of shooting Ron Howard's "Inferno" and has press commitments for Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies," both of which Eastwood's film will have to work around.

After American Sniper became a stunning box office success for Warner Bros. early this year, the studio has set its director Clint Eastwood for another biopic. The prolific filmmaker will helm an untitled film that tells the true story of Captain Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger, the American pilot who heroically landed a filled plane in the Hudson River after it malfunctioned mid-flight.
Sullenberger became a national hero back in 2009 when he pulled off a tricky emergency landing in the Hudson River off Manhattan when his aircraft, climbing out of Laguardia Airport, struck a flock of Canadian geese, disabling both engines. All passengers and crew members survived the landing.
Producer Frank Marshall acquired the rights to Sullenberger and Jeffrey Zaslow’s book back in 2010 and has been developing the project ever since. Allyn Stewart is also attached to produce.
