“There’s nothing the matter with the instrument, it’s the body. The woman’s body is all wrong!”
We’ve discussed how vulnerable it can be to be under the bright lights of the dentist’s chair but how about the doctor, particularly a specialty doctor that’s job is to deal with our most private of parts. David Cronenberg is the master of turning our bodies into horrible things that seek to hurt us, perfecting the use of the term “body horror”. So, what happens when Cronenberg makes a movie about twin gynecologists that begin to lose their grip on reality, and did you know that this is actually based on true events?...

Despite what popular perception might be, a lot of horror fans watch scary movies to get away from life’s harsh realities. So in a way, basing a horror on something that actually happened defeats the point. But the fact is it’s all in the telling. We’ve been quite strict about not including things that were just loosely inspired by a real event, with the majority of the story a fiction. So no Psycho or Texas Chain Saw Massacre (both inspired by Ed Gein) and no The Exorcist (the book was inspired by a real boy) etc.
Without further ado, here are our favourite horrors based on real events.
Dead Ringers (1988)

Rachel Weisz has joined the cast for an adaptation of David Cronenberg’s film ‘Dead Ringers’ at Amazon.
Weisz, who also serves as an executive producer on the series, originally pitched the idea for the adaptation at Annapurna Television. ‘Normal People’ scribe is attached to write and executive produce the series.
“I am so lucky to have such brilliant partners in Annapurna and Amazon Studios, and I’m thrilled to be collaborating with the exceptionally talented Alice Birch,” Weisz said. “I can’t wait to go on this journey with all of them.”
The 1998 original film starred Jeremy Irons in a dual role as identical twin gynaecologists. The film followed Elliot (Jeremy Irons), a successful gynaecologist who works at the same practice as his identical twin, Beverly (also Irons). Elliot is attracted to many of his patients and has affairs with them. When he inevitably loses interest, he will give the woman over to Beverly,...

“Twins And Stirrups”
By Raymond Benson
Okay, David Cronenberg has made some creepy-ass movies in his career, but there may not be one as icky as the 1988 Dead Ringers.
Cronenberg’s horror films seem to always deal with the human body in some grotesque fashion, whether it be mutant babies being born outside of the womb (The Brood), heads exploding (Scanners), or a man turning into an insect (The Fly)… and Dead Ringers fits the bill. It is a movie guaranteed to give women nightmares, for it’s about insane gynecologists. Identical twins, in fact. Twin gynecologists with stirrups, strange probing devices, and killer looks. Let that sink in for a moment.
Dead Ringers is somewhat based on a true story about real twin gynecologists, Stewart and Cyril Marcus, who lived and practiced in New York City in the late 60s and early 70s.

When people accuse David Cronenberg’s work of being “cold” or “clinical,” I suspect the movie they’re really talking about is his 1988 psychological thriller, Dead Ringers. It is a movie about surgeons, so of course it’s clinical. It is photographed with special cameras and carefully choreographed movements that require precision. It is a film about two men who share an unspoken bond and who keep all of their emotions under wraps. Of course it feels cold. But it is also a movie in which a woman tears into the flesh connecting conjoined twins with her teeth. There’s no mistaking it for anything but a David Cronenberg movie.

Well, genre fans, November 15th is a rather quiet week on the home entertainment front, as there are only a few releases coming our way this Tuesday. The sixth season of Game of Thrones makes its way home this week, too, and Star Wars fans can finally enjoy The Force Awakens in 3D from the comfort of their couches with a brand new set that arrives on Tuesday.
Dead Ringers: Collector’s Edition (Scream Factory, Blu-ray)
Claire Niveau (Genevieve Bujold) is in love with handsome Beverly. Or does she love Elliot? It’s uncertain because brothers Beverly and Elliot Mantle are identical twins sharing the same medical practice, apartment and women: including unsuspecting Claire.

Special Mention: Dead Ringers
Directed by David Cronenberg
Written by David Cronenberg and Norman Snider
Canada, 1988
Genre: Thriller / Drama
Dead Ringers is one of David Cronenberg’s masterpieces, and Jeremy Irons gives the most highly accomplished performance of his entire career – times two. This is the story of Beverly and Elliot Mantle (both played by Irons), identical twins who, since birth, have been inseparable. Together, they work as gynecologists in their own clinic, and literally share everything between them, including the women they work and sleep with. Jealousy comes between the two when Beverly falls in love with a new patient and decides he no longer wants to share his lady friend with Elliot. The twins, who have always existed together as one, have trouble adapting and soon turn against one another. Unlike the director’s previous films, the biological horror in Dead Ringers is entirely conveyed through the psychological...

Every year, we here at Sound On Sight celebrate the month of October with 31 Days of Horror; and every year, I update the list of my favourite horror films ever made. Last year, I released a list that included 150 picks. This year, I’ll be upgrading the list, making minor alterations, changing the rankings, adding new entries, and possibly removing a few titles. I’ve also decided to publish each post backwards this time for one reason: the new additions appear lower on my list, whereas my top 50 haven’t changed much, except for maybe in ranking. Enjoy!

Here's a great short film directed by David Cronenberg in 1972 from a script written by Norman Snider. It's called Secret Weapons, and the movie tells an interesting story of the development of a psychological weapon.
The story takes place six years into a future American civil war, and a scientist has created a drug that enhances fighting skills, and it makes soldiers want to kill. The scientist come across a force that fascinates him... "mysterious agents who proclaim the existence of magic, and a motorcycle gang that may be the last hope for revolution." The big question is, will he give the drug to the theocratic government, or the rebels?
About a decade after making this Cronenberg and Snider reteamed to bring us the psychological thriller Dead Ringers. Wach Secret Weapons, and let us know what you think of this early Cronenberg film! ...

50: Thundercrack!

Written by George Kuchar
1975, USA
Thunderstruck! is by far the most obscure film you will find on this list. It is without a doubt one of the true landmarks of Underground cinema. With a screenplay by veteran underground film maker George Kuchar (story and characters by Mark Ellinger) and directed Curt McDowell (than student of Kuchar),
Thundercrack! is a work of a crazed genius.

Dead Ringers
Written by David Cronenberg and Norman Snider Directed by David Cronenberg
Canada/USA, 1988
Director David Cronenberg has no trouble shying away from perversity. Often referred to as the Canadian pioneer of the psycho-sexual “body horror” genre, Cronenberg utilizes visceral special effects such as in The Fly remake, Videodrome and Scanners, while giving us an unflinching look at sexual desires that cross the boarder of perverse and unethical as seen in both Crash and Dead Ringers. The ability Cronenberg has to make his audience squirm is heightened not only by the visual effects, but of his complex narrative structure, and is what makes his films so intriguing. Though a shift from body-horror genre films to modern thrillers such as A History of Violence and Eastern Promises, Cronenberg has shown his audience that his capabilities are many, and his talents are varied. Perhaps inevitably, and somewhat prematurely, Lady Gaga's life story is coming to a TV screen near you. Lifetime is developing "Fame Monster: The Lady Gaga Story," a biopic based on the life the often controversial, always fashionable singer formerly known as Stefani Germanotta. The telefilm is being written by Norman Snider ("Casino Jack") and will be based on the 2010 book "Poker Face: The Rise And Rise Of Lady Gaga," written by Maureen Callahan. Lady Gaga herself is not involved in the project. This will be the first biography of Gaga, although HBO recently aired a concert documentary which touched...

Whether you love her or hate her, Lady Gaga has been taking over the music industry since her debut album “The Fame”. And while she’s only been around for a few years, it seems that a biopic is already in the works. Hollywood News is hearing that a casting call has gone out for a biopic on the pop star for the Lifetime channel. Norman Snider, who’s known for writing TV movies, has written a script for a film called Fame Monster, the title of Gaga’s second album.
The film is said to chronicle Steffani Germanotta’s life as she goes from a Catholic school girl to Lady Gaga. The film has apparently yet to be green-lit, but casting is already underway.

Lifetime is developing Fame Monster: The Lady Gaga Story, a biopic of the famous pop star. The project, named after Gaga’s 2009 Ep, is being written by Norman Snider (Casino Jack) based on Maureen Callahan’s 2010 book Poker Face: The Rise And Rise Of Lady Gaga, with Ilene Kahn Power (Lifetime’s Who Is Clark Rockefeller?) executive producing. Lady Gaga is not involved. Fame Monster chronicles the life of Stefani Germanotta, who started her musical career as a rocker and later was transformed into pop mega star Lady Gaga. The project has been heating up at the cable network and could get a green light soon. Gaga shot to stardom with her debut studio album, The Fame, in 2008, and has been making headlines as much for her music as she has for her outrageous outfits.

HollywoodNews.com: Exclusive: I don’t know if she knows it, but Lady Gaga is getting a Lifetime movie biopic. A casting call has gone out for an actress to play Stefani Germanotta, aka Gaga, from Lifetime. Listed as the producer is Ilene Kahn Power. Norman Snider has written the script for the film called “Fame Monster.” It’s a Toronto production. I’m told it’s optioned from Maureen Callahan‘s book, “Poker Face.” It’s not a “go” movie apparently, but they’re casting away. I’m told it’s also a love letter to Gaga, and not a’ “slash and burn.” It’s going to be about she invented herself, I’m told, and not about her copyrighted later appearances and costumes.

Chicago – While Alex Gibney’s enraging 2010 documentary “Casino Jack and the United States of Money” brought cinematic immortality to the life of recently imprisoned lobbyist Jack Abramoff, George Hickenlooper’s narrative re-telling transforms the cinema-obsessed criminal into the larger-than-life movie hero of his dreams. I have a sneaking suspicion that Abramoff may love this picture.
Consider the memorable pre-title sequence. Abramoff brushes his teeth in the mirror of a public bathroom, while harboring a stare to rival that of Jake La Motta. It’s not long before he launches into an impassioned and defensive monologue, justifying his outrageous actions while voicing his contempt for the majority of humanity, resigned to living honest yet “mediocre” lives. Like him or not, he is who he is, though the levels of self-deception fueling his self-righteousness are dizzying to say the least.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0

Rating (out of 5): ***
Casino Jack's ace-in-the-hole is Kevin Spacey, once more playing the cynical, snappy type of character he made so memorable in American Beauty. He's clearly enjoying every manic moment here, throwing in the occasional celebrity impression besides, and the screenplay by Norman Snider does a nice job of feeding his frenzy. There isn't much room for others in this kind of one-man show -- such as Kelly Preston, stuck in the sidecar playing Spacey's wife -- but Jon Lovitz gets in some nice moments as a sleazy, small-time hood.

Hereafter (Warner Bros.) Clint Eastwood’s spiritual thriller follows a trio of characters whose seemingly disparate paths converge: Matt Damon as a blue collar Joe who tries to fight against his psychic powers that see “the other side,” Cecile de France as a journalist who somehow survives the tsunami that crushed Indonesia, and a London schoolboy (Frankie and George McLaren) who seeks answers after losing his twin brother. Like all of Eastwood’s films, the narrative construction is tight as a drum, with solid work by all involved. That said, “solid” would have to be the operative word to describe the proceedings here, as well as “unremarkable” and “uninvolving” on an emotional level. Perhaps we expect too much when we see Clint’s name on a film these days, but that’s the flip side of being one of the best. Blu-ray/DVD combo pack.

Chicago – The halls of the Capitol Building are paved with money. It takes a long time beyond civics class and history to realize that. Kevin Spacey illustrates that concept precisely playing “super lobbyist” and convicted larcenist Jack Abramoff in “Casino Jack”.

Jack Abramoff’s story is a typical eye glazer for the average news consumer, but his actions effect everyone all the time.It is his story as an arch conservative con man, spewing religion while at the same time robbing people blind. And it’s all legal because the guys he has in his pockets make the law.
Basically the story revolves around Abramoff and his partner Michael Scanlon (Barry Pepper), as they set up specific lobbying efforts on behalf of Native American casinos. They use these “retainers” from their clients to peddle influence with key people in Washington, including the new Speaker of the House, Tom Delay...

When you come across a newsworthy item that strikes your creative fancy and feeds the instinct to turn it into some sort of screenplay is that you are not the only supplicant sipping from this particular muse's font. Jack Abramoff himself would fully appreciate this, both as an unsuccessful Hollywood screenwriter/producer and as a functionally-intellectual piece of human shit. If an idea is good, someone else is probably going to have it, and so you're gonna have to be the first to the finish line with the finished product, or else you're going to be considered derivative and lesser than. A Bug's Life trumped Antz, Dante's Peak edged out Volcano, Capote outcapoted Infamous, Armageddon aerosmithed Deep Impact, Tombstone made Wyatt Earp its huckleberry -- the streets of Hollywood are paved with the corpses of lesser flicks that were released within months of similar tales. Alex Gibney, who has been...

The American dream is the simple idea that anyone can rise up and achieve success through hard work. Unfortunately, when placed in the wrong hands, even the simplest idea can become distorted and misused. Casino Jack tells the story of American lobbyist Jack Abramoff’s rise (and fall) from the political system. After defrauding a handful of American Indian tribes’ through their gaming businesses to then propel himself into further dealings in the casino business, the title of the film becomes clear.

Kevin Spacey has been nominated twice for an Oscar for American Beauty in 1999 and before that for his role as Roger 'Verbal' Kint in Bryan Singer's The Usual Suspects. Oh, and he also won the Oscar both of those times. However, it's now been over ten years since Spacey was nominated for an Oscar and as far as 2010 goes he's only got one opportunity, his role as Jack Abramoff in the recently deceased George Hickenlooper's Casino Jack, which finally hits theaters in New York and Los Angeles this coming Friday. Does he stand a chance at earning one of those precious five Best Actor slots? Today I've got an exclusive red band clip to help you decide.
Right now I have Spacey in the #12 slot in my Best Actor predictions and I'm willing to say two slots are currently up for grabs as Colin Firth (The King's Speech...

In his in-front-of-the-mirror monologue, Casino Jack's Jack Abramoff, played by Kevin Spacey, tells his imaginary listeners that he works out every day. In case you didn't believe him, in this "The Godfather impersonation" clip, we get to see Abramoff buffing it up (or at least trying to) while chatting with his wife, Pam (Kelly Preston). "Washington is Hollywood with ugly faces," Abramoff tells the wife when she reminds him that he's no longer making movies. Directed by George Hickenlooper (Factory Girl, The Man from Elysian Fields) and written by Norman Snider, Casino Jack also features Jon Lovitz, Barry Pepper, and Twilight's Rachelle Lefevre. The Casino Jack synopsis and information below is from the Casino Jack press release: Aided by his business partner Michael Scanlon (Barry Pepper), Jack parlays his clout over some of the world's most powerful men with the goal of creating a personal empire of wealth and influence.

"Mediocrity is where most people live … Mediocrity is in your schools, in your dreams. It's in your family," Kevin Spacey's Jack Abramoff tells an imaginary crowd of listeners (while looking at himself in the mirror) in George Hickenlooper's Casino Jack. Davis Guggenheim (he of Waiting for 'Superman') would surely agree on the bit about mediocrity in schools. This looking-at-himself-in-the-mirror monologue is clearly Kevin Spacey's Oscar bait bit. Best moment: When Spacey's Abramoff reveals he works out every day. Casino Jack was written by Norman Snider.

Fairly appropriate for Election Day, and sadly as we mourn the film's director, George Hickenlooper, we present you with the official poster for the political comedy 'Casino Jack.' The one-sheet features Kevin Spacey, who stars as corrupt lobbyist Jack Abramoff, front and center amidst a red-white-and-blue-themed design. Also showcased are co-stars Kelly Preston, Barry Pepper (as Mike Scalon, coupled with another glimpse at Spacey) and Jon Lovitz, who looks quite miserable in a neck brace. Hickenlooper, who died suddenly this past Saturday, gets proper recognition for what is unfortunately his final film. His name is very prominently and largely printed in two separate spots.
With 'Casino Jack' Hickenlooper dramatizes the true story of the Abramoff scandal in a way that's surprisingly balanced and fun, according to Scott Weinberg's review from the Toronto International Film Festival, where the movie premiered in September. You'll "have a...

About nine months ago I walked into a Sundance screening of a documentary called 'Casino Jack and the United States of Money', which was a very pointed indictment of the numerous crimes committed by "super lobbyist" Jack Abramoff and his crew of greedy cronies. Seeing as things like politics and finance hold next to no interest for me, I wondered if I'd find anything to appreciate in the documentary, but I sure as hell did. Director Alex Gibney was able to make Abramoff's numerous convoluted schemes seem more realistic and accessible than any newspaper story, and I found myself appreciating the director's angry yet colorful approach to this potentially dry material.
And I'm pretty darn glad that I went into that screening, not only because I highly enjoyed Gibney's film, but also because I was able to jump right into George Hickenlooper's 'Casino Jack' with...

If “Casino Jack” is to be believed, then disgraced Washington super-lobbyist Jack Abramoff does a rather mean Al Pacino impression. If only Kevin Spacey, who plays Abramoff like he’s auditioning for a Vegas lounge act, had gone completely over the top and broken out his Christopher Walken and Jack Lemmon, then this might have entered the pantheon of great nutso performances presided over by Nicolas Cage. Even Barry Pepper, who plays Abramoff’s palm-greasing sleazoid sidekick Mike Scanlon, gets in on the act with the worst Robert De Niro-as-Travis Bickle imitation ever filmed. It’s as though they were having so much fun during filming that no one stopped to consider that maybe a little drama might make the outrageousness easier to swallow.

Toronto -- In what is shaping up as one of the best acquisition title fields at the Toronto International Film Festival in years, CAA will be shopping George Hickenlooper's "Casino Jack," starring Kevin Spacey, in two weeks' time.
CAA earlier sold the U.S. rights to the true-life drama about convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff on behalf of Rollercoaster Entertainment to James Schramm's Metropolitan Inc., but that deal fell through a few weeks ago.
So the U.S. theatrical distribution rights are back on the table, and Rollercoaster's Gary Howsam says the film's producer, Hannibal Pictures, and CAA plan a full-court press in Toronto.
"We produced the film in Toronto. We hoped to have the world premiere here, and we got that," Howsam said.
Spacey will be in Toronto on the first weekend to do a press junket for the U.S. and foreign press.
