Interview and feature by Mark Jurinko.
I recently had the opportunity to interview Los Angeles-based practical FX and make-up artist Shaun Smith and Chinese production designer Daniel Fu Dong about the upcoming Hong Kong action/fantasy film The Monkey King 2, which is directed by Soi Cheang. The movie is filled with a plethora of elaborate makeup designs, and Famous Monsters wanted to speak with a few of the gentlemen responsible for bringing these characters to life.
Famous Monsters. Daniel, can you tell us about how you came to start working on this project?
Daniel Fu Dong. I also worked on The Monkey King 1 as production designer. Soi, the director, and myself have a mutual vision for the continuity of the project. We are also both willing to create another vision that is way more grounded compared to Mk 1. As you know, in Mk 1, there are a lot of flying immortals...

Awards season may have come and gone, but sci-fi fans still have something to look forward to with today's announcement of the Saturn Award nominees.
The awards, presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, recognize excellence in these genres, which are often underrepresented at other awards shows.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, this year's big movie contenders are "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2," "Hugo," tied with 10 nominations each.
A number of the movies scoring big have been commercial successes but have not received awards show love, including J.J. Abrams' $260-million grossing monster hit "Super 8," which nabbed eight nominations, and "Captain America: The First Avenger," which earned nearly $400 million worldwide, coming in with six.
One of the most surprising cross-genre hits is Woody Allen's romantic comedy "Midnight in Paris," which took home the award for Best Original Screenplay at Sunday's Oscars, in...

You might first have noticed Max Greenfield back when he played the adorable Officer Leo on Veronica Mars. If you missed that, then AfterElton readers at least remember him as gay frat boy Calvin's first onscreen kiss on Greek, or more recently as Max's brief boyfriend on Happy Endings.
Greenfield can currently be seen (often shirtless!) in the Fox sitcom New Girl alongside Zooey Deschanel. We caught up with the much in demand actor at last month's TCA conference, and he was charming as he could be. Along with details on his new sitcom, he assured us his mother is a regular AfterElton reader (Hi Jo!), and he bluntly critiqued the gay kissing skills of both Happy Endings' Adam Pally and Greek's Paul James.
If you weren't a fan of Greenfield before reading this interview, you probably will be after.

First, the raw numbers: this is director and writer Gareth Edwards’ first feature, the movie cost a purported $15,000, internationally speaking the film has grossed over 1.5 million dollars, this is the one film you need to see this fall.
One of the spectacular aspects of a movie that is labeled sci-fi even though we only really glimpse the science of the fiction at the very beginning and then near the end which, really, is the crowning achievement of this little film that could, is that this movie exists at all. Stephen Lang nabbed an MTV Movie Awards nomination for Best Fight this year for his robotic-suit-assisted throwdown with Sam Worthington's big blue alien in "Avatar." Lang used machine guns, his huge metallic limbs, and even a massive slashing blade in the battle. But as the actor tells it to MTV News, that skirmish is nothing compared to what we'll see in "Conan."
"The look we created in this film, I've never been prouder than the creation of this role," he told us of his character, a merciless warlord named Khalar Singh.
A slew of photos of Conan himself, played by Jason Momoa, have already hit the web. But Lang's character has remained under wraps. Recently, though, the 58-year-old revealed Khalar's weapon of choice, as well as his overall look.

Boyband Connected may have wowed the judges and audience on tonight’s Britain’s Got Talent, but the youngsters have since admitted that they were incredibly nervous because they had never performed in public together before.
Earlier today we revealed that band member Harry Mondryk has previously auditioned for all three series of Bgt, but never made it past the final 150. While at stage school, he and his brother Max joined forces with Conor, Matt and Miles just five months ago and ‘Connected’ never performed publicly before their audition for the ITV show.

Singer Shaun Smith has claimed that many acts struggle to deal with the short-lived fame of Britain's Got Talent. The 18-year-old, who reached the final of last year's competition, claimed that appearing on a talent reality show often meant your career went "in reverse". "The normal career path is, 'I did Butlins, I did this, did that and then ended up in Wembley'. But on a reality TV show, your first gig is at Wembley Stadium and your last gig is at the pub up the road," he told Digital Spy. "Some people will struggle to deal with that, but luckily I've got a real good friendship group who have been the same with me throughout the whole thing. It is a brilliant opportunity, but I can understand why some people struggle to come to terms with it." Smith also insisted that he was not jealous of fellow finalists from...

Suddenly one third of the country knew who I was," he told Digital Spy. "Well, they don't anymore - I'm the forgotten one! Britain’s Got Talent hopeful Maxxie Oliver has admitted that he wanted to go commando during his Lady Gaga themed audition but thought it may upset some of ITV’s more prudish viewers.
Dressed in just a thong, a jacket and a red padded bra, Maxxie told the judges:
“When I dress up as Lady Gaga I feel beautiful and I just feel like her. I feel I am Lady Gaga not Maxxie.”
He then went on to perform a whole medley of Gaga songs but failed to impress head judge Simon Cowell.
Today he told The Sun that he wanted to go without pants for his audition. He revealed:
“Well, she doesn’t wear pants… but I couldn’t do that because it’s a family show.”
Talking about his obsession with all things Gaga he added: “I started being Lady Gaga a year ago when she came out with Just Dance.

Shaun Smith has signed on as a creature designer on “Conan” and Scott Wheeler will head up the makeup department. In addition to their time on “300”, Smith created makeup FX for “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” and “The Forbidden Kingdom” while Wheeler has worked extensively on two “Star Trek” movies, “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” and Joss Whedon’s upcoming film “The Cabin in the Woods.”

The world was fixated on the final "Britain's Got Talent" Saturday (May 30), mainly to see how the unlikely overnight sensation Susan Boyle, who has been battered by the media in the wake of last week's shaky performance on the show would fare. She did not disappoint her fans, who, judging by the amount of traffic clogging the show's Web site, were flocking to their computers to see her performance — but ultimately came in second, losing out to dance troupe Diversity. The 10-member British troupe will receive 100,000 pounds ($160,000) and will perform at the Royal Variety Performance before the Queen.
After singing performances from contestants Shaheen Jafargholi (who was told by judge Simon Cowell, "You have a great chance of winning this whole thing"), 2 Grand,...

Writer/producer Shawn Smith sent along the news that his perverted-puppet shocker Black Devil Doll will have its West Coast premiere Friday, April 17 at midnight at La’s New Beverly Cinema (7165 West Beverly Boulevard). And if you attend, you might be part of the DVD!
“We will be filming at this screening for a DVD extra, so be there!” Smith says; the disc is currently scheduled for release later this spring or summer. He goes on to note that the showing is the same weekend as our West Coast Weekend of Horrors, and just a short cab ride away from the La Convention Center, where our shindig will take place.
Directed by Jonathan Lewis from a script by Shawn and Mitch Mayes, Black Devil Doll is the saga of a ventriloquist’s dummy that becomes possessed by the spirit of an executed African-American militant and becomes a bloodthirsty, bad-ass murdering mofo.
