When people accuse David Cronenberg’s work of being “cold” or “clinical,” I suspect the movie they’re really talking about is his 1988 psychological thriller, Dead Ringers. It is a movie about surgeons, so of course it’s clinical. It is photographed with special cameras and carefully choreographed movements that require precision. It is a film about two men who share an unspoken bond and who keep all of their emotions under wraps. Of course it feels cold. But it is also a movie in which a woman tears into the flesh connecting conjoined twins with her teeth. There’s no mistaking it for anything but a David Cronenberg movie.
Jeremy Irons plays Beverly and Elliot Mantle, twin gynecologists who run their own highly successful and experimental clinic. Despite their deep connection, the brothers are different: Elliot is suave and confident, while Beverly is shy and frightened. When they meet...

The sixth season of Game of Thrones makes its way home this week, too, and Star Wars fans can finally enjoy The Force Awakens in 3D from the comfort of their couches with a brand new set that arrives on Tuesday.
Dead Ringers: Collector’s Edition (Scream Factory, Blu-ray)
Claire Niveau (Genevieve Bujold) is in love with handsome Beverly. Or does she love Elliot? It’s uncertain because brothers Beverly and Elliot Mantle are identical twins sharing the same medical practice, apartment and women: including unsuspecting Claire.

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

"Better Call Saul's" stone-faced hitman Mike Ehrmantraut may be keenly aware of everything going on around him, but the actor who plays him prefers to remain blissfully ignorant -- at least on Emmy day. I make it a point not to know when they're gonna announce awards, right? And that way I'm not stressed out, because I'm human. And I didn't, I didn't realize today was the day. Legendary costume designer Albert Wolsky was tasked with outfitting Alejandro González Iñárritu's latest film, "Birdman." But perhaps the film's most stand-out piece of wardrobe ended up landing in a different industry realm: special effects. Mike Elizalde is the owner of Spectral Motion, a creature and prosthetic makeup design studio in Glendale, CA that has plenty of experience in the superhero realm. The company was behind distinct looks in films like "X-Men: The Last Stand" and "Fantastic Four," and Elizalde himself picked up a Best Makeup Oscar nomination for his work on Guillermo del Toro's "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" in 2008. It was that connection to del Toro, in fact, that got him the gig on "Birdman" as his team was tasked with creating the Birdman costume actor Benjamin Kanes wears as a young Riggan Thompson in the film. National Association of Broadcasters CEO Gordon Smith offered a healthy plate of red meat to his constituents today as he urged officials to ensure that TV and radio have the same kinds of regulatory protections often provided for broadband and other media. “On one hand, government can treat us as if we are dinosaurs and does what it can to encourage TV stations to go out of business,” he told broadcasters at the kickoff of the annual Nab Show in Las Vegas. “On the other hand, the FCC says we are so important and powerful that two TV stations can’t share advertising in the same market, while it’s Ok for multiple cable, satellite and telecommunications operators to do so. The FCC is hearing both views this week following Chairman Tom Wheeler‘s recent proposal to restrict local TV joint service arrangements. National Association of Broadcasters CEO Gordon Smith came out swinging with a charge that the regulators are making it hard for broadcasters to promote localism and diversity — objectives called for in the Communications Act — according to notes publicly filed today of his visit yesterday with Commissioner Mignon Clyburn. He says that Wheeler lacks solid evidence and “makes sweeping generalizations” that are “arbitrary and capricious” about the problems that arise when a station handles ad sales, programming, or retransmission consent negotiations for a rival in the same market. These collaborations “greatly foster localism and diversity,” Smith says. He says that Wheeler’s proposals “use a sledgehammer where a scalpel, if anything, is far more appropriate.” Smith also called it “manifestly unfair” to bar TV stations from collaborating when it...

The Gop commissioner made the announcement at today’s open meeting, but didn’t say what he’ll do after he departs. The development is consistent with the widespread belief that his departure, after seven years on the commission, is a precursor to an announcement that Chairman Julius Genachowski also will move on. Once McDowell is out, the thinking goes, Genachowski’s departure would still leave the Democrats retaining the majority with two seats (Mignon Clyburn and Jessica Rosenworcel) vs. one (Ajit Pai). McDowell often opposed Genachowski’s initiatives including ones to establish net neutrality regulations, and favored moves to relax ownership rules on broadcasters. Oregon, where I’m from, will never run out of spectrum.” The Nab will cooperate with the FCC as it enters what Smith says is “uncharted territory.” But the trade group will try to ensure that stations aren’t coerced to participate in the auction. “That remains the focus of our concern.” Since the FCC action follows congressional legislation, the process likely will proceed no mater who wins the presidential election in November.

National Association of Broadcasters president and CEO Gordon Smith told the industry crowd at the Nab Show in Las Vegas today to beware of broadcasters’ wireless rivals while touting the lobbying group’s legislative victories over the past year. Smith, giving the State of the Industry address this morning, warned that telecommunications companies who have been grabbing spectrum for mobile TV services will be seeking more. “They want us out of this game,” he said in his prepared remarks. “We can’t let down our guard.” In another major part of Smith’s keynote, he cited Nab’s efforts to help knock down the Performance Rights Act and shape spectrum laws that benefited broadcasters, calling the wins “game-changers” that “elevated the stature of Nab in Washington.” Said Smith: “We averted a spectrum grab from misguided friends who would have you believe that broadcasting is yesterday’s technology.” Smith also said...

Who’d have thought that TV broadcasters would be so bent out of shape by a proposal to let Web users see political ad sales information that stations already provide on paper to people who visit a station? But they are, and they’re leaving little to chance as the FCC heads toward an April 27 meeting where commissioners are due to vote on a measure that would require stations to feed their info to an FCC database. Nab chief Gordon Smith met yesterday with FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski saying that stations shouldn’t be required to change. Among his reasons: Broadcasters fear that they’ll lose bargaining leverage with advertisers. If buyers can go online and see how much a station charged for specific political ads, the thinking goes, then they’d know how low a station’s willing to go. Federal law enables candidates to pay the lowest rates...

Washington, DC — Gordon H. Smith, President and CEO of the National Association of Broadcasters, has agreed to a five-year contract extension that keeps him at the helm of Nab through 2016, Nab Joint Board Chairman Paul Karpowicz announced today. Smith, 59, joined Nab in November 2009 and oversees the advocacy efforts of thousands of local radio and television stations across America. He is a former two-term United States Senator from Oregon (1996-2008) and was a successful entrepreneur before launching his career in politics. “Nab membership is happy to have Gordon Smith navigating our interests in Washington, and we’re delighted that he’s agreed to this contract extension,” said Karpowicz, president of Meredith Corporation’s Local Media Group. “Faced with two potential game-changing issues – the Performance Rights Act for radio and the spectrum bill for television — Gordon demonstrated uncommon grace, savvy and determination in preserving a bright future for broadcasting.” “I’m thrilled...

Widespread adoption of NBCU Screen It would obviously save a lot of money on manufacturing and postage. "Apples and oranges" was my off-the-cuff reply to a critic I admire as we rose from our seats following a screening of Werner Herzog's Cave of Forgotten Dreams. He'd just muttered something to the effect of "sure beats Pina" and, while comparisons will be nearly impossible to resist — two giants of the New German Cinema have each made their first films in 3D, both of them documentaries, and, on that day in February, the Berlinale had just screened them back to back — I'm sticking with my initial verdict: apples and oranges.
Now Wim Wenders's Pina is playing in the UK and a few European countries, while Places, strange and quiet, an exhibition of nearly 40 large-scale photographs taken between 1983 and the present, is on view at Haunch of Venison in London through May 14 — the cover of the current issue of Sight & Sound, by the way, reads "The Third Coming...

The Nab Show is under way in Las Vegas, where Nab President and CEO Gordon Smith looks to broadcasting's future in his state of the industry keynote address, "Spectrum Should Not Be Used For Speculation," below. He's on the warpath against wireless companies such as At & T persuading the FCC to take more TV spectrum away from broadcasters. "We are in full battle mode to protect broadcasters from being forced to give up spectrum involuntarily," he says. I saw a cartoon in The New Yorker a while back. This man is standing at a lectern to give a speech and he's saying, "I know so much I don't know where to begin." Well, I don't know that much, but I know more than I ...
