"The goal for me, always, is try to make a movie that feels timeless, that people will watch years from now," said "Mrs. Doubtfire" director Chris Columbus in a recent interview with Ktvu.
The character of Mrs. Doubtfire actually has her roots in a real person -- not a recently-divorced father pulling a desperate gambit to see more of his kids, but the owner of a second hand clothing shop in Edinburgh. The shop was called Madame Doubtfire and, colloquially, so was its owner, though her name after remarrying was Annabella Coutts. She was something of a local legend, with one Edinburgh resident recalling that she had "about half a dozen cats" and that while her shop was an excellent resource for high-quality second hand goods,...

A group of screenwriters including Eli Roth, Graham Yost and Amy Chozick have issued an open letter decrying the Writers Guild of America’s silence on last week’s Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel.
In the letter, posted to the blog site Medium, the screenwriters mention the statements already issued by other Hollywood guilds, including SAG-AFTRA and the directors’ guild.
“When it comes to taking a stand, the Writers Guild of America has always led by example,” the statement said. “When employers sought to exploit our work, the Guild bravely spoke up. When the BLM movement took flight, the Guild rightfully spoke up. When the #MeToo reckoning came and Hollywood needed to change, again the Guild spoke up. But when terrorists invaded Israel to murder, rape, and kidnap Jews… the Guild stayed silent. It remains the only major Hollywood union to do so.”

The Brady organization against gun violence is calling on Hollywood writers, directors and producers to examine onscreen gun violence and depictions of gun safety, asking the creative community to sign a pledge that’s already garnered more than 200 signatures of such names as Judd Apatow, Shonda Rhimes, Damon Lindelof and Jimmy Kimmel and the writers of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The pledge, while noting that the “responsibility lies with lax gun laws supported by those politicians more afraid of losing power than saving lives,” acknowledges that “America’s storytellers” have the power to “effect change.”
“Cultural attitudes toward smoking, drunk driving, seatbelts and marriage equality have all evolved due in large part to movies’ and TV’s influence. It’s time to take on gun safety,” the Brady pledge states, and goes on to ask writers, directors and producers to, whenever possible, to:

While fans around the world mourned the loss of actor Ed Asner today at age 91, many in the Hollywood community praised a different side of the man.
Asner was remembered for his liberal crusading and kindness toward those whose credentials were far less than his own, all captured in online postings by the famous and not-so-famous. They uniformly recalled a man who was unafraid to take on difficult tasks and speak truth to power. Moreso, he got results from his actions.
A few of the early takes:
He had spunk. I like spunk. Rip, Ed Asner.

This is very sad news. Ed Asner was a radical until the end. I'll never forget when he spoke once to a labor conference in L.A. on plant closures and brought out 3 members of El Salvador's Farabundo Martí National Liberation to talk instead. Rip. https://t.co/WOovgPvkPM...

Aug. 11 marks seven years without Robin Williams and fans are paying tribute to the beloved actor and comedian through the acts of kindness and impressive body of work he left behind.
As posts memorializing Williams began to flood social media Wednesday, one tribute celebrated the man’s legacy of “joy and inspiration” from a considerably more intimate place of loss.
“Dad, seven years ago today you passed on,” Zak Williams tweeted along with a photo of his father. “The joy and inspiration you brought to the world carries on in your legacy and in your family, friends and fans you so loved. You lived to bring laughter and to help others. I will be celebrating your memory today. Love you forever.”

Exclusive: Sony Pictures Television is developing Invisible Women, a female-driven dark comedy based on Jeanne Ray’s novel Calling Invisible Women, with veteran screenwriter and showrunner Randi Mayem Singer (Mrs. Doubtfire) set to pen the pilot.
In Invisible Women, a woman “of a certain age” wakes up one day to find herself literally invisible and soon realizes she’s not alone.
“I love the idea of invisibility as a metaphor for when women are no longer ‘seen’ as we were in younger years,” said Singer. “The fun comes with making invisibility a superpower as well as an identity crisis.”
Singer partners on the project with Kay Cannon and Laverne McKinnon of K&l Productions and Alex Hertzberg, who will executive produce.
Singer is known for writing the Robin Williams blockbuster Mrs. Doubtfire. She created the dramedy series Jack & Jill, which aired for two seasons on the former WB network, and...

On Friday the White House confirmed that Donald Trump Jr., son of President Donald Trump, has tested positive for coronavirus. He’s one of several prominent Republicans — including Florida Senator Rick Scott, and Andrew Giuliani, son of Rudy, who confirmed they have been exposed to Covid-19 just today alone.
And of course he’s one of dozens of people in Donald Trump’s immediate orbit who have contracted the virus in the last several months, including Donald Trump himself, and Herman Cain, who died from it in July. This comes after months of efforts by the president and his associates to downplay the illness and turn efforts to prevent people dying of it into a political wedge issue.
In what is probably not a shock, once the news was public, people on social media definitely chose not to remain politely silent about their feelings regarding Don Jr.’s condition. Instead,...

When Lisa Jakub showed up to audition as the oldest daughter of Robin Williams and Sally Field in Mrs. Doubtfire, she was introduced to a matronly Scottish woman. Jakub thought she was talking to the mother of director Chris Columbus, who was in production on the movie that turned out to be an enduring classic comedy after opening Nov. 24, 1993.
“I remember being introduced to Chris Columbus’ mother and thinking I had to really make small talk and be charming because this was my boss’ mom,” said Jakub, who was 14 when she made the film. “I wanted to make a good impression. It wasn’t until later that I realized [it was Williams]. I totally fell for it.”
It didn’t take that long for Matthew Lawrence, then 12, to realize that something was going on. “I started to catch on because I was a working kid. But definitely for two or three minutes I was sitting next to Mrs. Doubtfire...

Legendary playwright Neil Simon died Sunday due to complications from pneumonia at age 91.
The “Odd Couple” and “Barefoot in the Park” writer had more than 30 plays mounted on Broadway, and also wrote numerous films, some original and other adaptations of his theater works. He won a Pulitzer Prize in 1991 for his play “Lost in Yonkers,” and received more Oscar and Tony nominations combined than any other writer.
Simon’s former wife and actress Marsha Mason posted a tribute to her ex-husband: “He was a great talent and man, husband and father. He shall be sorely missed . With his passing, his work and plays live on and will be enjoyed by many generations to come. I miss him deeply and always.”
“Neil Simon will always be one of my theatrical heroes and I am so proud to have played a small part in his unparalleled career and remarkable legacy,” said Nathan Lane in a statement.

When the news first broke about Reese Witherspoon becoming attached to a high concept Disney comedy called Wish List, we worried that it sounded as though she was falling back on formula rom-coms. We’re still a little cautious about the premise, but we’re heartened to see that Bridesmaids' Paul Feig is now in negotiations to direct it. Wish List would see Witherspoon as a woman who made a set of wishes when she was young. Now, as a driven career type with no real memory of what she asked for, she finds the wishes suddenly coming true and causing havoc in her life. But, we would hazard a guess, possibly also offering important life lessons. The script, which has been lurking around the studios since 2001 (when it was originally conceived with a male lead character), has been through the hands of Randi Mayem Singer, Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger.

Some of you may remember Disney's "Wish List" project. It was reported last August that Reese Witherspoon had signed on to star in the gig; a comedy about an overly imaginative little girl who makes ten wishes at a wishing well. None of the wishes come true because the coins never touch the bottom of the well, but 25 years later, they're dislodged, and now this ambitious career woman has to deal with the consequences of ten wishes made as a child that are coming to pass.
Sounds a bit like "Enchanted" meets "When In Rome," and it was originally going to be written by Randi Mayem Singer who wrote "The Tooth Fairy" (and ironically enough a project first developed for a male lead, a la "Big"), but apparently it's been penned by "Kung Fu Panda 2" screenwriters Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger. Reese Witherspoon, last seen opposite Twilight Saga lead Robert Pattinson in Fox's adaptation of Sara Gruen's period romance Water for Elephants, turned the Disney comedy Wish List upside-down when she agreed to play the lead, what was originally written as a male part. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney moved forward on fixing the situation by hiring Kung Fu Panda 2 screenwriters Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger to re-write Randi Mayem Singer’s original script about a young girl who drops a coin into a wishing well and makes ten wishes with no impact. Witherspoon signed on to play the little girl as a grown career woman who faces her childhood wishes coming true all at once because her coin dislodged after 25 years and finally lands at the bottom of the well.

Reese Witherspoon will be starring in upcoming Disney comedy, Wish List, as a career-driven woman whose childhood dreams are granted twenty-five years late, Deadline report.
Witherspoon’s career has been a mixture of serious and light-hearted roles, and she can play both very well, and Wish List looks set to be one of the latter.
The film will see,
“an overly imaginative little girl who makes ten wishes at a wishing well. They don’t come true because her coin never reached the bottom and eventually she loses her inner child and becomes a full grown and ambitious career woman. Some 25 years later, the coin is dislodged, falls to the bottom and she has to deal with the ramifications of 10 kid wishes coming true all at once.”

Reese Witherspoon's next project is a Disney fluff piece called Wish List, about a girl whose wishes do not come true because the coin she throws into the well never reaches its bottom. Twenty-five years later, Witherspoon enters as that girl's older self, a careerist who has lost the imagination of her childhood. The coin finally drops, and she is left to deal with the fallout from ten 25-year old wishes being fulfilled en masse. The script, by Randi Mayem Singer, who brought us The Tooth Fairy (cringe), but also Mrs. Doubtfire (a more respectable piece of candy), was originally written for a male star but is being reworked for Witherspoon. Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray, who most recently made Disney's Secretariat, will produce. -Having ...

[1] Way back in late 2010, we reported on the potential casting [2] of Bradley Cooper in the lead role for David O. Russell's The Silver Linings Playbook. At some point, however, Mark Wahlberg emerged as the star of the film, and Cooper was no longer associated with the project. Now, it's looking like we're back to square one, with Wahlberg out and Cooper back in. Wahlberg has dropped out of the film due to a scheduling conflict with a different project (possibly Broken City with Allen Huges), and Cooper is currently in talks to replace him. Also in talks for the movie is Robert De Niro, who met [3] with Russell earlier this summer regarding an unnamed part. Jennifer Lawrence is still set [4] to co-star as the main character's love interest. Based on a novel by Matthew Quick, the film follows a former high school teacher (that'd be Coopers part) who’s...

When Reese Witherspoon appeared in the critically acclaimed Election and earned a Golden Globe nomination that was a first memorable moment in her career; the second highlight was when Witherspoon starred in Sweet Home Alabama, which was her biggest commercial success to date; finally in 2005, Witherspoon won international critical praise for her portrayal of June Carter Cash in Walk the Line, which earned her an Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Screen Actors Guild Award for the Best Actress in a Leading Role.
Witherspoon was last seen in the romance drama Water for Elephants along Robert Pattinson, and will next hit theaters in This Means War with Chris Pine and Tom Hardy.
And that’s not all, of course because she has signed up to star in Wish List, a Disney-produced feature about a woman who made a wish on a coin thrown into a well as a little girl...

Alden Ehrenreich might want to thank Francis Ford Coppola for starting his career. Even though Steven Spielberg had a big hand in helping him get attention, this is a guy that went from basically being a complete unknown to the star of Coppola‘s Tetro, and he also has a role in the director’s upcoming Twixt. A part in an upcoming project that we’re anticipating quite a bit has just come his way, and it can only be taken as a good sign for him.
Variety says that the actor has joined the cast of Park Chan-wook‘s Stoker, where he’ll be playing “Whip Taylor, an alpha dog on the football team” that shows kindness toward the character played by Mia Wasikowska, who is picked on by his friends. That doesn’t seem to last long, because he “eventually forces himself on her.” The cast he’s...

Disney wished for Reese Witherspoon, and wishes always come true when it comes to Disney.
The "Water For Elephants" beauty will soon learn that you better be really careful what you wish for as she signs on to play the lead role in the studio's latest fantasia, "Wish List," according to Deadline.
"Wish List" tells the story of a young girl who wishes for ten wishes as she tosses a coin into a wishing well. The coin doesn't quite make it to the bottom, so the wishes don't come true, leaving the girl disappointed and unfulfilled.
However, 25 years later, the coin becomes dislodged and finally makes it to the bottom, and the grown-up girl -- now a successful career-minded businesswoman -- has to deal with ten childlike wishes suddenly coming true all at once.
Will she embrace her inner child and learn how to be "young" again? Hey, this is Disney we're talking about here!

You would think that, with an Oscar under her belt and some serious clout in Hollywood, Reese Witherspoon would be above becoming attached to a script that sounds like it channels the very highest heights of the high concept rom com. But nope, she’s happy to be associated with something like Disney’s new project Wish List.Currently being cranked out by Randi Mayem Singer (Tooth Fairy), Wish List finds an imaginative little girl making 10 wishes at a wishing well. Sadly for her, the coin gets lodged before it can hit the bottom and the young lass grows up to become a driven, career-focused businesswoman (Witherspoon) who has no time for wishes or dreams or family or whatever. Then the fun Really begins! The coin is somehow let loose and finally hits the bottom of the well, unleashing all of the wishes in one go to cause havoc in the woman’s life.
