In 1992, comic book writer and artist Todd McFarlane created a new superhero character called Spawn. Five years later, director Mark A.Z. Dippé and screenwriter Alan B. McElroy brought Spawn to the screen in a PG-13 rated movie that didn’t go over well with a lot of fans. There were rumblings of a sequel for years after that, but nothing ever happened. Back around 2005, McFarlane announced he was going to make sure a new Spawn movie was going to be made, even if he had to produce, direct, and finance it himself. For nearly twenty years, he has been slowly pushing that project forward… but there is some level of hope that we might finally see the new Spawn sometime in 2025, so we figured we should put together a list of Everything We Know About the Spawn Reboot.

For a guy that looks like a clear rip-off of Batman and Spider-Man, Spawn has some convoluted backstory. And in the decades since the character first appeared in the original launch of Image Comics, his mythos have only grown more overwrought, with each addition including ever more players in a war between Heaven and Hell.
It may not (yet) involve cyborg gorillas like Cy-Gor or any number of angels and demons who trouble the late Al Simmons, but the saga of a Spawn reboot on the big screen has similarly had a myriad of twists and turns. In 2019, Spawn creator and action figure magnate Todd McFarlane announced a deal with Blumhouse, masters of the B-movie hit. As previously reported here at Den of Geek, Blumhouse gave McFarlane the means to make the superhero movie of his dreams: a “dark, ugly two hours worth of movie” with “no joy.”

Jason Blum is bringing the “Blumhouse edge” to the upcoming “Spawn” film adaptation.
During a press line for Blumhouse at New York Comic Con 2023 (per Screen Rant), Blum teased the “Spawn” movie currently in development at his eponymous production company.
“It’s going to be edgy and original as compared to other superhero movies,” he said. “It’s gonna definitely feel like the Blumhouse version of a superhero movie.”
Blumhouse Productions is best known for producing horror movies such as “M3gan,” “Get Out” and the “Paranormal Activity,” “Insidious” and “The Purge” film franchises.
Back in 2017, original comic creator Todd McFarlane announced that a new movie based on his human-turned-Hellspawn was in the works at Blumhouse. McFarlane, who is on board to write and direct the film, is also producing with Blum.
“We just signed [Jason Blum] yesterday,” McFarlane said in a video announcement at the time during San Diego Comic-Con. “No more theoretical … It’s coming.

It has been more than a quarter-century since we last saw Todd McFarlane’s Spawn on the big screen. With Blumhouse Productions attached to resurrect the Image Universe favorite, its founder and figurehead Jason Blum is promising that his studio’s trademarks will be injected into Spawn’s veins. So long as we don’t get a bunch of dancing Spawns at the premiere, that sounds fine to us…
Blum – who launched Blumhouse Productions in 2000 and has made a clear impact on the horror genre – recently told Screen Rant, “I’m going to bring the Blumhouse edge. It’s been nearly 25 years since a proper adaptation of Todd McFarlane‘s Spawn appeared on the big screen. The HBO animated series was nearly perfect in every way. Though Spawn was canceled following a huge cliffhanger, it showcased a unique perspective on heroism. It wasn’t just a mindless animated showed where he’d take down the bad guy of the week. Rather it was a dark noir story that touched on themes of morality, depression, and betrayal throughout its three-season run. The animated series did an incredible job of fleshing out Al Simmons. Needless to say, he remains one of the...

Many fans of Spawn are eager to see Todd McFarlane’s much anticipated reboot eventually materialize, regardless of how long it takes. In some possibly surprising news, though, someone less enamored with the prospect of the movie is Michael Jai White, the star of the 1997 original.
While speaking to Cbr, White was asked what he thought of the ultimate viability of the project and McFarlane’s role in it, and had this to say:
“He’s been trying to get a new movie up and going for 23 years so I don’t know. [Laughs] The last time I saw him, he was telling me about his idea of Spawn being ethereal fog that you don’t see, like Jaws, and he strikes and you never see him and I’m like ‘Okay, good luck with that!’ Personally, I wish him well, that would be a major investment.”

Jamie Foxx is reteaming with Netflix after having recently starred in the streamer’s Project Power to headline another movie exclusive to the platform, this one a comedy in which he plays a vampire hunter.
Day Shift, as the film is titled, will see Oscar-winning actor and box office draw Foxx as its star. However, the director’s chair will be occupied by an untested talent in J.J. Perry, a second unit and stunt coordinator from major films such as Fast & Furious 9, The Fate of the Furious, Bloodshot and the John Wick franchise. Perry will work off a script by burgeoning screenwriter Tyler Tice that was revised by Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum). Pertinent to the former credit, Chad Stahelski, who directed the John Wick films, is serving as a producer here.

Comic book movies are going to remain Hollywood’s big thing for quite some time to come, and while most people look forward to new and unheard of material, others are looking back to right the mistakes made in adapting properties in the past. With that, there is a large audience for a reboot of Spawn, and few are more enthusiastic than Jamie Foxx, who is still eager to star in the eponymous role.
Foxx has been signed on for quite some time and is still just as committed to the film as he was at the start when he first boarded it, having this to say:
“I surprised Todd McFarlane. I said, ‘Bro, I know that one day you will do this movie, and I hope you will keep me in mind.’ What Black Panther did was let us know that it’s so necessary, and it’s the time,...

In the tangled tale of Todd McFarlane’s Spawn, there’s been one constant you can rely on: Jamie Foxx. The Oscar-winning actor is a fan of the character and signed on early for the lead role. His star power allowed McFarlane to argue that the film would be profitable: the key factor in securing that elusive green light. Sadly, however, Foxx’s presence hasn’t been enough to push the pic into active production and now, more than two years on from the actor signing on to play Al Simmons, there are rumors that he’s getting cold feet.
While McFarlane has claimed that the Oscar winner remains on board, sources close to Wgtc – the same ones who said Han was returning to the Fast & Furious franchise and that Transformers is being rebooted – say that they’re still trying to secure a backup in the event that Foxx walks.

To say that the upcoming Spawn reboot is something of a passion project for Todd McFarlane would be to deal in wild understatement.
After all, the comic book creator has been working on the film since as far back as 2007, when he promised to drag Al Simmons back onto the big screen no matter the cost – even if it meant financing the entire thing himself. Talk about dedication.
It’s that boundless energy that has kept the project going for all these years and according to McFarlane, his Spawn movie is now teetering on the verge of development. In fact, thank to the success of Joker, interest is high in the property and it should be getting off the ground sooner rather than later. But there are still a few hurdles left to clear before it’s really off to the races for the film.

Following an excruciatingly long wait, Spawn finally made his debut in Mortal Kombat 11 earlier this week.
Real name Al Simmons, Spawn, brought back from the dead by the demon Malebolgia, is made a reluctant servant of Hell in its everlasting war with Heaven, though events don’t exactly go according to plan for either party. During the course of his story, Spawn becomes something of an anti-hero, saving the downtrodden through unconventional means and, well, not always intentionally.
There is, of course, a well-known Marvel character with a similar moral compass to that of Todd McFarlane’s creation, and it appears as if NetherRealm is well aware of the fact. A number of alternate costumes for Spawn are available in Mortal Kombat 11, one of which bears more than just a passing resemblance to Deadpool himself. Fans have quickly spotted the similarities and, unsurprisingly, have taken to social media in order...

The 1990s have given us many Exxxtreme pop culture warriors responsible for chaos and countless deaths. Cable from X-Men. Azrael from Batman comics. Carnage. Duke Nukem. The Maxx. After decades of edgy designs and over-the-top gore, it’s time for these guys to finally cross paths.

To say that Blumhouse’s Spawn reboot has turned into something of a passion project for Todd McFarlane would be a pretty big understatement. I mean, he’s been attached to it ever since 2007, when he promised to drag Al Simmons back onto the big screen no matter the cost – even if it meant financing the project out of his own pocket.
And now, here we are in 2020 with still no movie. But McFarlane’s undying energy has kept Spawn on life support and the film is now on the verge of finally – finally! – getting off the ground and entering development. As fans of the antihero will know, though, it’s not only in cinemas that they’ll soon see the character, as he’ll also be showing up in Mortal Kombat 11 and ahead of this Sunday’s gameplay reveal, Todd McFarlane has now offered up a little tease on Twitter.

Last year’s Joker became the most profitable comic book movie ever made, and the first R-rated film to gross a billion dollars, against a budget of just under $63 million. The unsettling character study has also been nominated for more Academy Awards than any comic book movie ever, all of which is cause for celebration for former Marvel Comics creator and Image Comics co-founder Todd McFarlane.
Joker is the latest in a recent wave of highly successful R-rated adaptations of comic book properties, along with 2016’s Deadpool and its 2018 sequel, and 2017’s final Wolverine solo film Logan. McFarlane sees the popularity of this particular batch of pics as indicative of an appetite among moviegoers for darker, more mature stories centered on characters originating from comics. And thanks to the success of Joker, he’s now feeling pretty hopeful about Spawn, as you can see below.

"I need 20 million people to give me a dollar," Spawn creator Todd McFarlane says of financing the movie reboot.

Even though Mortal Kombat 11 hit store shelves nearly two months ago, the newest entry in the long-running series still has plenty of fresh content coming down the pipeline. Back in May, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and developer NetherRealm Studios announced that a handful of new fighters were in the works, including one which might be familiar for longtime comic book fans.
Right now, players can purchase the game’s aptly-named Kombat Pack, which grants access to over a dozen bonus skins for existing characters, a new gear set for Johnny Cage and, most importantly, four brand new fighters. Aside from a few Klassic Kombatants – Sindel, Nightwolf, and Shang Tsung, who was just made available today – the paid Dlc also unlocks Spawn.
Unfortunately, NetherRealm and Warner Bros. haven’t shown him off just yet, but a few days ago, the official Mortal Kombat 11 Twitter account posted a brief clip, which is sure to get fans excited.

Jughead: The Hunger vs. Vampironica #1: "In the world of Jughead The Hunger, there are no vampires, having been wiped out in their great war with the werewolves. In the Vampironica universe, the opposite is the case, as it was the vampires who were the victors. So what happens when these two eternal enemies are brought together again? Whatever it is, it can’t be good for poor ol’ Jug and Vampironica, you can count on that much."

On paper, Eddie Brock and Albert ‘Al’ Francis Simmons aren’t so different.
They both have their inner demons, and struggle to strike a balance between one life and the other. There’s another common denominator between Venom and Spawn, of course. His name? Todd McFarlane, and he’s still crossing his fingers in hope that the two anti-heroes will one day share the screen together.
It’s a long shot, of course; Sony currently holds screen rights to the sinister symbiote, and is unlikely to part with them anytime soon after last year’s standalone Venom movie soared past $850 million worldwide. Spawn, on the other hand, is about to receive a new lease of life courtesy of Blumhouse Productions and Todd McFarlane himself, with Jamie Foxx on board to play Al Simmons.
Still, McFarlane isn’t about to throw the towel in when it comes to a possible monster...

Just as there is no crying in baseball, there will be no laughs in the new Spawn movie...
Thanks to the bottomless Blumhouse checkbook, Todd McFarlane is finally going to get to make the Spawn movie of his dreams, and his dreams - as you might suspect - are about as far away from the McU as he can get.
Image Comics president McFarlane has been talking to Nerdist about the upcoming reboot, which has cast Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Renner as its leads. The movie is set to push the grim violence of Spawn as hard as it can this time around, taking the story of "back from the dead and pretty pissed off about it now" CIA agent-turned-nightmare demon Al Simmons to its natural state.

From the Oscar-winning Ray to Django Unchained to, er, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Jamie Foxx’s résumé is nothing if not eclectic.
This is an actor who jumps from one unique project to another, and wholly commits himself to the role at hand. His latest? A lead role in the Spawn reboot coming from Todd McFarlane, and it turns out Foxx didn’t take much convincing before he signed along the dotted line; as a matter of fact, he “jumped in with two feet.”
Via ComicBook.com, McFarlane recalled some of his early meetings with the Oscar-winner, during which time he outlined the tone and style of Spawn and what it means to play the part of Albert Francis Simmons.
I was fortunate enough, I went to my first ask, which was Jamie Foxx. I had talked to him before. I had talked to him at my office, coincidentally, years before,...

The cast of Blumhouse and Todd McFarlane’s Spawn movie has officially grown by one today.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, McU veteran Jeremy Renner (Avengers 4) is locked in to play Twitch, a morally-just police officer who ultimately becomes an unlikely ally to Jamie Foxx’s Al Simmons, the man imbued (cursed?) with demonic abilities after a cruel twist of fate leaves him to wander the Earth as a spawn of hell. And we mean that in every sense of the word.
For Renner, this casting announcement comes after a full week of rumors and intense speculation, though let it be known that the actor, who recently headlined zany comedy flick Tag, has secured another major comic book movie role for 2019. No prizes for guessing what the other one is…

Exclusive: Jeremy Renner has been set to star alongside Jamie Foxx in Spawn, the Blumhouse film that marks the directorial debut of Todd McFarlane from his scripted adaptation of his comic book creation. In late May, Foxx was set to play the title character, who started out in the comics as Al Simmons, a member of a CIA black ops team who is twice betrayed: after being set up by his cohorts to be murdered with his corpse set aflame, Simmons is then double crossed in Hell. He is convinced to become a Hellspawn warrior in exchange for being able to be reunited with his wife, only to find himself stuck in his demonic creature shell, and that his wife moved on and married his best friend. Spawn turns his rage on street scum and revenge. He realized long ago that he can’t battle the constant evil permeating the globe alone,...

Jeremy Renner may have been absent from the latest Avengers shockbuster, but the actor’s name is currently being linked to Todd McFarlane’s Spawn.
According to That Hashtag Show, Renner could be playing the lead role of Detective Twitch Williams. The character is described as “an honest detective” who will team up with Spawn as he seeks vengeance for the murder of his young daughter.

Of all the big-name tentpoles currently slated for fall 2018 – think Halloween, The Predator, Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 – Venom is practically in a league of its own when it comes to hype and jittery excitement. And we now have the data to prove it.
As reported by Screen Crush, Venom‘s official trailer (see here) has accumulated more than 64 million views on YouTube since it was released into the wild back in April. That’s higher than any other installment in the Spider-Man franchise – not even Homecoming (28 million) or The Amazing Spider-Man (37 million) come close to Sony’s record – and big enough to rival a number of true Hollywood titans, such as Star Wars: The Last Jedi (50 million), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (55 million), and Iron Man 3 (62 million).
The Force Awakens and Infinity War‘s respective trailers cracked 100 million views upon release, so it remains to be seen whether Venom can climb higher still.

You know how Marvel Studios deemed Avengers: Infinity War to be the most ambitious crossover, well, ever? Todd McFarlane recently dreamed up a movie crossover of his own. And we’ll give you a clue: it involves Spawn and Venom.
The seasoned comic book scribe is currently attached to develop Blumhouse’s live-action Spawn movie, and while it’s still early days, McFarlane spoke to ComicBook.com about blowing the cobwebs off a cult project that’d been sentenced to development hell years prior.
It’s a credit to Todd McFarlane and his team, then, that Al Simmons is alive and well – rumor has it Spawn will begin filming early next year ahead of a possible Halloween 2019 release – though the comic book scribe continues to dream big. His latest ‘what if’ scenario? A movie crossover involving Spawn and Venom:
Here’s a big “What If.” What if Sony distributes Spawn?...

Back in 1997, covert government assassin Al Simmons was introduced to the moviegoing masses as Spawn, a vengeful, supernatural hero hell-bent on bringing his former employer, Jason Wynn (Martin Sheen), down to size.
Helmed by Mark Dippe, the cult actioner proved to be a decidedly different spin on the superhero format, even if it failed to resonate with viewers. But Todd McFarlane’s long-gestating reboot offers Al Simmons another shot at the big time, and it seems the writer, director and all-around comic book veteran has his eye on some big name talent for Blumhouse’s Spawn movie.

Todd McFarlane is actually about to start shooting his long-awaited Spawn film. As you know, he's been talking about this film for years. I honestly never thought that it was going to happen, but... he proved me wrong! According to Omega Underground, the film will start shooting sometime in May, most likely in New York City.
We still have no idea who will star in the film, but MacFarlane has thrown out names like Jamie Foxx as Al Simmons and Leonardo DiCaprio as Twitch, but I seriously doubt that's going to happen. I am curious to see who he ends up casting, though.
MacFarlane previously explained that the movie would most center around Twitch and over the years he's loved comparing his story to Jaws.
"There's two big roles in the script. There's obviously sort of Spawn himself, although in a weird way it's not the biggest role, and then there's the cop.

Blumhouse’s gestating Spawn reboot won’t be quite two hours in length – but it also won’t be 90 minutes.
That’s the news from ComicBook.com, who caught up with seasoned scribe Todd McFarlane, the brains behind Albert Francis “Al” Simmons, to discuss cameos, casting and the possibility of an uncut version (spoilers: don’t hold your breath for the latter).
When pressed about an actual, tangible runtime, though, McFarlane admitted that it’s far too early to begin talking numbers. But if he had to guess, Spawn will likely fall somewhere between 90 minutes and two hours – or just under.
Technically, every story should have its own length; here’s how it works in Hollywood, as you know. They look at it that a page is a minute, right? So if you give them a 120-page script, they go ‘Okay, it’s a two-hour movie,’ and so historically Hollywood wants 120 pages.

Thanks to the one-two punch of Deadpool and Logan, 20th Century Fox has single-handedly altered the narrative of R-rated comic book movies – and in the space of 13 months, no less.
No longer are adult-oriented films pushed to the side in favor of more palatable, PG-13 products, as the studio has doubled down on its mature lineup through the likes of Deadpool 2, X-Force, X-23 and even The New Mutants. But there’s another R-rated feature simmering in the early stages of production, and it appears to be cut from a different cloth entirely.
Its name? Spawn, the long-brewing thriller that’s since found a home at Blumhouse Productions – arguably the perfect fit – and during a recent chat with Az Central, seasoned comic book scribe Todd McFarlane revealed that his “dark and heavy” feature is much, much different to the likes of Deadpool and Logan.
