- Noted painter and photographer. Worked briefly as art director for the Brooklyn Eagle, before beginning his career as a photojournalist for Collier's magazine in the 1940s. His pictures were often on the cover of Life and Look during the 1950s and '60s.
- Became famous for his iconic photos of Marlon Brando in a ripped shirt for A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), and Marilyn Monroe with her billowing skirts above a subway grate, for The Seven Year Itch (1955).
