Because the Casting Society of America shifted the date of its Artios Awards, this year’s nominees include films released theatrically from July 1, 2013 to Dec. 31, 2014, paving the way for last year’s Best Picture winner to nuzzle its way into contention along with 2014 hopefuls like "Birdman," "Boyhood," and "Selma." With categories ranging from Big Budget Drama to Low Budget Comedy, nearly every film that one expects to make the cut made the cut. And then some. The Csa’s nominees put "Guardians of the Galaxy" side by side with "Wolf of Wall Street," "Whiplash" with "Inside Llewyn Davis," and Disney’s "Planes" with "Frozen." If you were dreaming of a re-evaluation of "We’re the Millers," your time is now. 2015’s bicoastal Artios Awards will be hosted by Patton Oswalt (Los Angeles) and Michael Urie (New York City). The evening will also honor two-time Academy Award®-nominee Richard Linklater ("Boyhood...

The Casting Society of America has super-sized its Artios Awards feature film nominations this year, honoring 42 different films and putting some of 2014’s top contenders in categories where they’ll compete against 2013’s awards movies.
For its 30th annual ceremony, the awards for casting directors have moved from their usual fall slot to a late-January date that placed them in the middle of awards season. For casting director Beth Sepko, Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood” was a project unlike any other she’d done in the past. Knowing she needed actors for years at a time made the task particularly challenging. “There were times I would get an email saying, ‘We’re going to do this next fall’ or I’d get an email saying, ‘Hey, next month we’re going to shoot a segment,’ ” Sepko told Backstage earlier this month. “And Rick [Linklater] would give me a call and say, ‘I need a teacher, I need a boyfriend, a new neighborhood kid.’ ” Taking over after the film was initially cast by Anne Walker-McBay, Sepko worked tirelessly to create a troupe of supporting characters. But it wasn’t just Ellar Coltrane, Ethan Hawke, and Patricia Arquette who gathered together year after year to film the 12-years-in-the-making movie. As any actor knows, there’s no part too small,...

The director of Boyhood will collect the Casting Society Of America’s Career Achievement Award at the 30th Annual Artios Awards on January 22.
The Artios Career Achievement Award recognises “an individual’s contributions to the entertainment industry and inclusion of the casting director in the overall creative process.”
Linklater has directed 17 films and worked with casting director Beth Sepko for more than a decade on Boyhood.
“Richard is a filmmaker whose work is both current and timeless,” said Csa president Richard Hicks. “With Boyhood, he worked with casting director Beth Sepko to make casting choices, which sustained the film’s emotional truth over the 12 years it took to shoot.
“It demonstrates the power of making the artistically authentic choice and highlights how much can be achieved with quality casting. His career is full of such work. It’s a special year for the Artios, our 30th, and it required an extraordinary honouree. We are thrilled...

Keeping a cast together for a dozen years deserves a little recognition, according to the Casting Society of America. The group is set to present “Boyhood” director Richard Linklater with their Career Achievement Award at the 30th Annual Artios Awards in January. The award “recognizes an individual’s contributions to the entertainment industry and inclusion of the casting director in the overall creative process.” CBS Entertainment Chairwoman Nina Tassler was the last person to be honored by the Csa with the award. During the production of “Boyhood,” Linklater spent a decade working with casting director Beth Sepko, who helped discover newcomer Ellar Coltrane, who plays the son of Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette. Lorelei Linklater plays Coltrane’s sister Samantha. The length of the shoot "demonstrates the power of making the artistically authentic choice and highlights how much can be achieved with quality casting. His career is full of such work,...

When you make movies about people, an eye for casting becomes an auteurist stamp. Richard Linklater knows his characters so well — their personalities, their movements, their sounds — that by the time he inserts actors into each part, the choices feel like absolutes. Take the "Before" series. It’s a war crime to fantasy cast alternatives for Celine and Jesse. Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke are too perfect. Just try. Nope. Not the same movie. Can’t do it. Impossible. In a testament to Linklater’s knack for spotting talent, the Casting Society of America will present two-time Academy Award-nominee with their Career Achievement Award at the 30th Annual Artios Awards. “Richard is a filmmaker whose work is both current and timeless. One of the made-in-Austin films having its premiere at this year's Austin Film Festival is Dear Sidewalk, a romantic comedy about a mail carrier (Joseph Mazzello, Jurassic Park, Justified) who falls for an older divorcee (Michelle Forbes, True Blood, The Killing). Also featured in the cast is one Ashley Spillers, who has acted in many buzzworthy local films of late (The Bounceback, Pit Stop, Loves Her Gun) and even appears in the viral short Hell No.
The former Austinite also stars in the horror-comedy Saturday Morning Massacre (aka Saturday Morning Mystery if you are buying it at Wal-Mart), which screens at the Housecore Horror Film Festival on, appropriately enough, Saturday morning.
Before Austin Film Festival started up, Spillers took part in this email interview for us.

It's a good day for funny people, especially if your name is Tina Fey or Seth MacFarlane.
Fey's series, 30 Rock, was handed 22 Emmy nominations this morning, which stands as a record for a comedy series. She and Alec Baldwin were also nominated for acting awards. Plus, for the first time some of the other actors on NBC's laffer were recognized. Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer and Tracy Morgan all picked up supporting nominations.
MacFarlane's Family Guy was also nominated for best comedy series, the first time an animated show has cracked that category since The Flintstones in 1961. Two years ago MacFarlane decided to pull his show from contention in the animated series category to have it considered for best comedy.
Mad Men, the drama about the advertising world in the sixties, picked up 16 nominations in the drama categories, including a best actor nod for Jon Hamm. Hamm is also nominated as...

Recently, Drew Barrymore directed and starred in a feature called Whip It!, set in Austin, Texas, and based on a novel by a former Austinite, Shauna Cross. The film was shot in...Ann Arbor, Mich. Say what? Why would a town with a rich film culture and at least two major favorite-son film directors — Robert Rodriguez and Richard Linklater — miss out on hosting a project that's such an obvious fit? As usual, it's a money thing. Michigan — along with such states as New Mexico, Massachusetts, and Louisiana — currently offers producers hefty incentive packages to shoot on its soil. As Gary Bond, director of the Austin Film Commission, points out, the 8.25 percent sales-tax exemption and other incentives that Texas offers to filmmakers don't add up to the same breaks available elsewhere. Nevertheless, last January, Austin was named the No. 1 American movie city by MovieMaker magazine, beating out such incentives-rich locales as Albuquerque,...
