Hoping for the big screen success that's greeted other members of the Judd Apatow comedy circuit such as Seth Rogen and Jason Segel, March brings Jay Baruchel's bid for stardom, "She's Out of My League." No telling if this saucy, yet sweet effort will score with audiences in the manner of "Knocked Up" or if it will be a "Drillbit Taylor" style bust.

Carrie Underwood will make her acting debut on "How I Met Your Mother" later this season.
The season 4 "American Idol" winner will guest-star on an episode of the CBS series, creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas said on a conference call with reporters Wednesday (Jan. 6). The episode will likely air in March.
Her character, named Tiffany, is a "gorgeous enigma" who catches Ted's (Josh Radnor) eye. "What makes her even more intriguing," the creators say, "is the fact that she's a pharmaceutical rep, or Pharma Girl, which according to Barney [Neil Patrick Harris] has replaced nurses and stewardesses to become the Official New Profession of Hot Chicks."
Despite all that, we're reasonably confident that she's not the character in the show's title. More likely for that role? Rachel Bilson, who guests in Monday's (Jan. 11) 100th episode of the series as a woman who'll play a pivotal role in Ted's future. Bays and Thomas »

He’s triumphed in the world of music as both a performer and a producer racking up three Grammy awards, has co-founded two successful clothing labels and even collaborated on designing furniture (?), but Pharrell Williams is moving into movie territory for his latest project. The N.E.R.D. frontman will write a number of songs and the orchestral score for new animated comedy, Despicable Me. The film, scheduled to hit Us cinemas in July and those in the UK in October, is a who’s who of screen comedy featuring the vocal talents of Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Will Arnett, Danny McBride, Jemaine Clement and most intriguingly, Julie Andrews and tells the tale of two competing super-villains (Carell and Segel). »

In taking the duty, Pharrell will be joined in the studio by Oscar-winning composers Hans Zimmer and Heitor Pereira. Of that matter, he said, "I love cartoons and animation, and I've never seen such incredible 3-D CGI. To score Despicable Me along with Hans and Heitor and write original songs for the film is a dream come true."
The title track of the film is composed by Pharrell along with MeOh!My. The snippet is featured at the end of the film's first teaser trailer, while the whole 4 minute version of the song has been in the web for a few months. In addition to that track, Pharrell »

Williams has won three Grammys (but really, who hasn’t?), will join Hans Zimmer and Heitor Pereira to create original music for the movie. Here’s what Williams had to say about joining the project.
“I love cartoons and animation, and I’ve never seen such incredible 3-D CGI. To score Despicable Me along with Hans and Heitor and write original songs for the film is a dream come true.”
It’s really great to see him so enthusiastic about getting to write some of the music and I think it will help distinguish Despicable Me from other animated films. Williams wrote the title track for the film and you can hear some of it at the end of the teaser trailer. You can check out »

Most of you have probably seen this already but we make a point of posting this video every year. Last year’s 2008 Cinescape video was self-titled but featured a wonderful look at the year in movies. Now Matt Shapiro’s annual montage has been met everywhere with lauded online reception. Shapiro had this to say about his fourth video in his series:
“So here we are, at the end of a momentous decade, and the personal significance this video holds with me – I made the first one around the time high school started, and I made this one as its approaching an end – makes me especially proud to present to you, for the fourth (but certainly not final) time, 2009: The Cinescape.”
Shapiro has a list of all the films he used in his video on his Youtube site. I have to say that his musical choice was outstanding this »

Much has been said, as this decade has drawn to a close, about the depths of stupidity and inanity that have been the driving force of today’s popular media. It’s true—the aughts have seen reality television become the medium of choice for mindless entertainment, and a platform where the only necessity for becoming a star is having no shame. However, secretly, I believe that we are actually living in one of the great eras of television. With the growing popularity of serial shows on cable networks that used to be film channels (HBO, AMC, etc) the bar has been raised for the level of writing, acting, and production values we demand as an audience. Intricate serials like Lost proved that a show didn’t have to be a procedural to be popular.
One of my favorite things about watching long-term scripted dramas is they have the time »
