[This story contains spoilers from the season two finale of The Gilded Age.]
In HBO’s period drama The Gilded Age, the character of Peggy Scott (Denée Benton) offers a solitary glimpse into the life of the Black upper class in New York City in the 1880s. Yet in season two, that contextual lens is expanded when the secretary and aspiring journalist, just one generation removed from slavery, ventures to the South and witnesses both the progressive educational strides made by and for African Americans at the dawn of the establishment of historically Black colleges and universities, as well as the social prejudices that threaten their existence.
“Peggy gets to explore so many different textures of the Black world this season, from going to Tuskegee, to meeting Sarah Garnet and seeing the community organizing that was happening during that time, and getting to see a Black social gathering for the fireworks at the Brooklyn Bridge, which was one of the first in the series,...

When The Gilded Age returns to HBO for Season 2, it’ll do so with one less player in the game.
Thomas Cocquerel, who played Marian’s ex-fiancé Tom Raikes, will not return for the period drama’s sophomore outing, our sister site Deadline reports. So if you were hoping for some juicy drama between the exes next season, you’ll have to save it for your fan-fiction.

Anyone who's anyone has been to Newport.
On The Gilded Age Season 1 Episode 8, there is much fun to be had by the seaside, but events in New York are more serious than ever.
For a few characters, major secrets have at last been revealed.
Mr. Adams came to play.
John Adams's initial hopes for himself and Oscar contrast sharply with the situation of Mr. McAllister. He is strongly hinted at to be gay but is married to a woman.
Mrs. McAllister lives in Newport while her husband cavorts in New York. Do they have a spoken (or unspoken) arrangement?
No one seems to suspect Oscar and John just yet, but Oscar is right -- older and unmarried, their "friendship" will start to appear more suspicious. Mr. McAllister is married, and people still talk!
What can I say? I like to win.

Absolutely scandalous!
On The Gilded Age Season 1 Episode 4, much of what transpires is deeply uncomfortable, which only highlights the inequity of this dazzling world.
Too many assumptions are made that may spell ruin for some characters -- or at the very least, humiliation and embarrassment.
Peggy Scott is such a fascinating character, and we learned so much about her here -- still no hint as to her great secret shame yet, but it clearly can't be that bad if her parents want her back home with them.
Mr. Arthur Scott: Dorothy, our responsibility is to raise a child with a sense of right and wrong. I cannot put that aside to play happy families.
Mrs. Dorothy Scott: No. And it’s not a game we are very well equipped for, is it?

There’s New York, and then there’s new New York — and, as the latest trailer for The Gilded Age makes abundantly clear, one is far more highly regarded than the other.
“New York is a collection of villages. The old have been in charge since before the revolution… ’til the new people invaded,” Christine Baranski’s Agnes van Rhijn explains to her niece Marian (played by Louisa Jacobson) at the start of the preview, which HBO released Monday.
