In 2022, Nicholas Galitzine was on the main stage of “Coachella”, flanked by bandmates Jaiden Anthony, Raymond Cham Jr., Vik White, and Dakota Adan.
Surrounding them were 5,000 screaming fans, chanting at the top of their lungs, “August Moon! August Moon! August Moon!” For most of the guys, who are professional dancers, this was somewhat familiar, they’d performed for much bigger audiences, supporting stars like Beyoncé and Britney Spears, and dancing on national TV. But for Galitzine, this was all brand new.
Under the spotlight, the actor was playing the role of a world famous pop star — one fifth of a massively successful (fictional) boy band. So while the crowd was real, it helped that they weren’t actually in Indio, California for their set, but a couple thousand miles away on a chilly December morning in Atlanta, filming scenes for the Prime Video rom-com film, The Idea of You.

In the 1990s and 2000s, May (and specifically Memorial Day) typically marked the beginning of Summer Movie Season. Multiplexes nationwide were packed to the emergency exits with big names, big explosions and (presumably) big box office. The film industry has changed since then, obviously, and summer no longer packs the same high-octane punch that it once did. But in this evolution, release schedule space has opened up for a stellar month of Don’t-Miss Indies titles.

Cathy Schulman says getting into the movie business was a “bit of an accident.” It was a time before studying cinema was recognized as a fine art, so she was a playwrighting major at Yale. Then someone told her she would average about $1,500 for her plays. Concerned if she could support herself, she was advised to look into the movie business. “I said, ‘What’s that?’” Schulman, now the CEO and president of Welle Entertainment, recalls. “And the next thing you knew, I was in an interview, and I was hired to work on a set, and the rest is history.”
The movie was “Blue Steel,” and the-then 22-year-old Schulman was excited to see the film was being directed by a woman, Kathryn Bigelow. (She didn’t know it would be another 20 years before she worked with a female director.) From those humble beginnings, Schulman would go on to enormous...

Lava for Good co-founders Jason Flom and Jeff Kempler, along with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Gilbert King, will partner with Oscar-winning film and television producer Cathy Schulman’s Welle Entertainment and Primary Wave Music to develop and produce a multi-season scripted television series inspired by Lava for Good’s award-winning podcast Bone Valley. Veteran screenwriter and TV producer Dana Stevens will adapt.
Written and hosted by King along with producer and researcher Kelsey Decker, the show chronicles the chilling story of Leo Schofield, the Central Florida man who was wrongfully convicted and imprisoned for killing his wife, Michelle. Schofield has spent over three decades in prison — even after another incarcerated man, Jeremy Scott, confessed in detail to the crime. The attention that King and the podcast have brought to the case was cited in Schofield’s most recent parole hearing in May of 2023, which resulted in Schofield being transferred to the Everglades Re-Entry Center.

The canon of Ilana Glazer-led indies about childbearing expands. Following 2021’s “False Positive,” Glazer plays pregnant once again in “Babes,” this time from a film script she wrote with Josh Rabinowitz in Pamela Adlon’s feature directorial debut. The Neon comedy follows Eden (Glazer), who gets pregnant from a one-night stand and seeks help from Dawn (Michelle Buteau), a married mother of two. In other words, “Babes” lets the “Broad City” star do what she does best: lean heavily on the support of a best buddy.

In the trailer for Prime Video’s “The Idea of You,” Anne Hathaway portrays a 40-year-old single mom who gets to live out a teenage girl’s dream: embarking on a whirlwind romance with the 24-year-old lead singer of the world’s hottest boy band, played by Nicholas Galitzine. The R-rated film will stream globally on Prime Video starting May 2.
After the couple meet backstage at Coachella, they kindle a steamy relationship. As Hayes (Galitzine) plays Solène (Hathaway) a song on the piano, he grips her thigh. “I’m too old for you,” she insists, before he pulls her in for a kiss: “No you’re not.”
The couple is seen navigating paparazzi while embarking on romantic outings, causing Hathaway’s character to ask, “What about what people will say?” — to which Galitzine responds, “I don’t care what they say.” The trailer features the debut single from the film’s soundtrack,...

A petition by the Producers Union asking the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers to drop “producers” from their official name was delivered to AMPTP president Carol Lombardini on Tuesday.
As of noon, 2,353 producers, including Blumhouse founder Jason Blum, Women in Film president Cathy Schulman and “Fast and the Furious” producer Neil Moritz have signed the Change.org petition.
“The AMPTP primarily represents major studios, networks and streaming platforms, and the inclusion of ‘Producers’ in their name inaccurately implies that all producers are part of this organization. The ‘P’ in AMPTP stands for ‘producers’ but is left over from a long-gone era when all film producers were employed by the studios,” reads the petition, which was first posted to Change.org in July.

Exclusive, Updated with PGA statement: More than 2,300 film and TV producers on Tuesday are delivering a message to the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers: leave us out. The group delivered a petition to AMPTP President Carol Lombardini this morning demanding the dropping of the “P” from the acronym of the organization that just concluded a brutal negotiation with the WGA, and hopefully is in the final stages of a SAG-AFTRA deal after one of the longest strikes in Hollywood history.
Taking them out of a labor fight they were never part of is just the first step in what producers hope will lead to a redrawing of rules that leave them without health care, and being the last to be paid despite them being the early catalysts for film and TV projects.
The producers have amassed 2,338 signatures since June, when they first posted a petition on Change.

TriStar Pictures film “The Woman King” has been given official permission to release in cinemas in mainland China. It is expected to debut on April 14.
The Viola Davis-starring fantasy action film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September last year and went into U.S. and international commercial release shortly after.
The film has grossed $97.2 million worldwide, with $29.9 million coming from international markets and $67.3 million in North America.
While the China release is significantly later than the rest of the world, potentially opening the film to online piracy, the launch date was communicated by Chinese authorities with some five weeks of advanced notice. That is more than many Hollywood films have received in China and gives the local marketing teams a reasonable chance to promote the film’s theatrical launch.

To some, the awards season schedule can feel like an exhausting, soul-crushing experience. But for filmmaker Sarah Polley and Hildur Gudnadóttir, it’s simply the best.
“We’re going to all the events,” said Women Talking and Tár composer Gudnadóttir while standing next to pal Polley on the red carpet at the BAFTA Tea at Four Seasons Los Angeles in Beverly Hills on Saturday. “It’s actually really fun because we don’t see each other very often and it’s been a really great excuse to hang out with Sarah and just go to all the events with her. We’ve been pissing ourselves with laughter.”
Polley, on the circuit for her critically acclaimed Women Talking, called it “weirdly amazing” that others may complain about the demands and dizzying number of red carpets while she’s embracing the chaos. “We’re having the best time ever. We go to everything,...

With all the chatter about the 2022 movies that are already well on their way to Oscar night, it’s time to shine one last spotlight on Gina Prince-Bythewood’s historical epic “The Woman King.” Released last September, the movie stars Oscar winner Viola Davis in another unforgettable role as Nanisca, the general of the Agojie, an all-woman army protecting the African kingdom of Dahomey during the 1800s.
If that idea sounds familiar, that’s because the Agojie were the inspiration for “Black Panther” comic book writer Christopher Priest to create the Dora Milaje, Wakanda’s woman army that would play a huge role in both 2018’s “Black Panther” and 2022’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
Despite the similarities, “The Woman King” is a very different movie, based more on historical knowledge of the Agojie while telling an original story about Nanisca and the Agojie’s newest young recruit, Nawi, as played by Thuso Mbedu.

Campaigning for Oscar love this season are two movies with strong feminist themes, but Sarah Polley’s”Women Talking” and Gina Prince-Bythewood’s “The Woman King” hardly qualify as “women’s pictures.” (Remember those?) Women crafted these movies in hopes of finding a wider audience, with mixed results: Prince-Bythewood grossed 94 million worldwide, but Polley’s just-released film is off to a slow start.
Now they face another numbers game, at the Academy. Despite Herculean efforts to diversify and expand its ranks since 2015, the Academy voting pool is still 66 percent male and 81 percent white. That means the Steak Eaters, the rank-and-file males who vote for movies like “Unforgiven,” “Braveheart,” and “Gladiator” (as well as “Crash” over “Brokeback Mountain”) are not necessarily rallying to their sides.

Editors note: Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series debuts and celebrates the scripts of films that will be factors in this year’s movie awards race.
The battle to make the historical action film The Woman King started as early as 2015 when producer Cathy Schulman and actress-producer Maria Bello approached Viola Davis about starring in an all-Black female warrior tale. With Davis attached and Sony’s TriStar Pictures onboard, the team offered screenwriter Dana Stevens the chance of a lifetime she couldn’t refuse.
The Woman King, based on a real faction of Beninese female soldiers known as the Agoije, follows its leader Nanisca (Davis) and her fierce tribe of warriors as they defend the kingdom of Dahomey from a violent neighboring clan and Europeans capitalizing on the slave trade. The film also stars Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, John Boyega and Sheila Atim.

I was joined at today’s Contenders Film LA3C event by the key people behind the hit epic The Woman King, which was just named to the prestigious list of AFI’s Top 10 Movies of the Year. It also scored a rare A+ Cinemascore during its opening weekend in September, proving it has not only critical acclaim but also that from the audience. The funny thing is this story of a band of all-female African warriors defending their kingdom in the 1800s was turned down by every studio the filmmakers approached until they finally got a yes from Sony’s TriStar Pictures. It was a smart move for the studio as it clearly has an Oscar contender here.

Setting out with an assignment to interview five women directors who are also awards season contenders meant beginning with emails to everyone’s publicists. The very first response came with a bite: “Why just ‘female’ directors? She’s just a filmmaker.”
And then there were four.
Indeed, why aren’t they filmmakers first and foremost? It was a question to ponder throughout screenings and interview prep. In the same vein as the colorblind teachings of the ’80s and ’90s, which are now widely criticized for not taking a full-person experience into account, it seems that stripping the gender from these filmmakers also detracts from their art.
Gender (and race and so many other factors) certainly shape everyone in ways large and small, regardless of where one falls on the spectrum. The experiences of these filmmakers speaks directly to why and how they create art; it’s no different than if...

This interview with the cast of “The Woman King” first ran in the Guild & Critics Awards / Documentaries issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
By any reasonable calculation, “The Woman King” was a risky movie to make. Set in 19th-century Africa, starring a huge cast of mainly Black women actors — many of them not widely known — it faced big questions about whether the movie would find its audience.
Incredibly, it did. Willed into existence by a team that included director Gina Prince-Bythewood and producers Viola Davis, Julius Tennon, Mario Bello and Cathy Schulman, the release from Sony’s TriStar Pictures has made more than 90 million at the global box office since its September release. Critics have also embraced the film (as have audiences: It has a 99 audience score on Rotten Tomatoes), with the L.A. Times’ Justin Chang identifying the movie’s hat trick of taking “an old-fashioned template to deliver...

It’s rare for sequels to make a big splash on the awards circuit; only two have ever won best picture — “The Godfather: Part II” and “Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.” But director Rian Johnson’s star-studded feature “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” is proving to be an exception, with the filmmaker taking home the Visionary Award for his work on the upcoming whodunnit movie at this year’s 12th annual Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards.
“I’m very lucky that I have the family around me that I’ve worked with for years and years,” Johnson said during his acceptance speech, crediting his co-collaborators with helping him to achieve his cinematic vision. “My producer Ram Bergman — we’ve been working together since my first film ‘Brick,’ my cinematographer Steve Yedlin — we met freshman year in the dorms at USC, my composer Nathan Johnson — he’s my cousin,...

ReFrame, the coalition founded by Women in Film and Sundance Institute, has joined forces with Teal Media to launch ReFrame ReSource, a new research hub with advocacy resources, best practices and research not proprietary to any single company or studio.
Andria Wilson Mirza, director of ReFrame said, “Many respondents identified that their employers were making commitments to diversity, equity and inclusion, but they lacked the tools, resources or training to make the realities of the commitment. This gave us a clear call to action for the next phase of ReFrame’s work.”
Developed with Teal Media, ReFrame ReSource is an open-source and iterative online resource. The hub builds upon a research-based action plan to deliver culture change resources directly to those within the industry.
The site will launch with more than 100 individual tools that align with key choice points in a film or television project’s life cycle. It will...
