Les Amazones d’Afrique began in 2017 as a sisterly supergroup of singers from the West African region of Mali. Founded by Mamani Keïta, Mariam Doumbia (of Amadou and Mariam), and Oumou Sangare, and convened by French music-industry veteran Valerie Malot, the collective came together through a shared musical vision, as well as the goal of championing gender equality and bringing attention to the pressing issue of violence against women.

Maimouna Doucouré, a French director of Senegalese origins who grew up in a social housing project in Paris and started her career with a screenwriting contest, isn’t one to buckle under any type of pressure or challenge.
She certainly didn’t dwell on the misguided backlash to her film “Cuties.” The controversy was provoked by Netflix’s promotional material for her Sundance prizewinning feature debut, which aimed to shed light the sexualization of children. In her sophomore outing, “Hawa,” Doucouré embarked on another challenging project, a modern-day fable boasting a cast entirely made up of non-professionals, including the celebrated Malian singer-songwriter Oumou Sangaré, astronaut Thomas Pesquet and popular singer Yseult.
As with “Cuties,” which earned Fathia Youssouf a Cesar award for best promising actress, the Amazon original film “Hawa” is headlined by Sania Halifa, a newcomer who delivers a robust performance. Halifa, a teenager with albinism, plays the title role,...

A bold celebration of taking up space in places you’re told you don’t belong, “Hawa” is a crowd-pleasing fable with a fluffy heart, fierce spirit and disarming sense of humor. These qualities also define the titular heroine of Maïmouna Doucouré’s lovely sophomore feature, co-written by Doucouré, Alain-Michel Blanc, Zangro and David Elkaim. Hawa is both sensitive and fearless while she roams the streets of Paris on a life-defining quest with her dependable scooter and unapologetic blonde afro, seeing the world through her idiosyncratic coke-bottle glasses as she earns the help and goodwill of a parade of strangers.
Don’t be alarmed by the crowded group of writers here — despite the many cooks in the kitchen, “Hawa,” under the baton of Doucouré, is as coherently envisioned and tightly structured as movies come. You might recall the gifted Doucouré’s name and recognize her style from her debut “Cuties,...

Amazon Prime in France has unveiled its upcoming slate of director-driven Originals, including ‘Hawa,’ a new movie by “Cuties” director Maimouna Doucouré, Nicolas Bedos’ TV debut “Alphonse” and Franck Gastambide’s “”Medellín.”

She sets off to get adopted by someone she admires more than anything, one of the most powerful woman in the world. “Hawa” is produced by Bien ou Bien Productions.

When looking at Grammy nominations for 2022, you might notice that there are a few cover songs nominated. As per Grammy rules, a cover can only be submitted in a performance category or in an arrangement category; they’re not eligible for songwriting since they were written in a previous eligibility period, or sometimes before the Grammys were even created. This year I think three covers seem to be in a good position to win: Jason Isbell’s “All I Do is Drive,” Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga’s “I Get a Kick Out of You,” and Chris Cornell’s “Nothing Compares 2 U.” But just how common is it for covers to prevail?
Country is one of the fields with the most covers winning. A few of the most recent wins have included “Gentle On My Mind” by The Band Perry (originally performed by John Hartford), “Wagon Wheel” by Darius Rucker...

All the Grammys have been handed out, and in a night of upsets, a few unexpected artists walked away with some glittery statuettes for the mantle. Jazz bassist and singer Esperanza Spalding snagged the Best New Artist trophy, besting chart-toppers like Justin Bieber and Drake, and indie darlings Arcade Fire won the coveted Album of the Year trophy, beating out pop supernovas like Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, heavily nominated Mc Eminem and country stars Lady Antebellum.
Lady Antebellum have plenty more to celebrate, however, having picked up no less than five awards, including both Song of the Year and Record of the Year. John Legend and the Roots' joint project Wake Up! as well as Jay-z scored three awards (none were televised), while 10-time and six-time...

I have to admit, every year I tune into the Grammys I mentally prepare myself for disappointment. Yet I still watch, hoping that the granddaddy of music awards shows will exceed my admittedly low expectations.
I'm happy to say that this year they've done it (for the most part).
Gimmicky performances, undeserving nominees and baffling winners - the usual Grammy mainstays - were all on display last night, yet for every bad egg (seriously Gaga?) there was a nice surprise that put a smile on my face.
The show began with a tribute to 18-time Grammy award winner, and Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. Jennifer Hudson, Martina McBride, Yolanda Adams, Christina Aguilera and Florence and the Machine's Florence Welch honored the ailed diva by singing a string of her hits.
Sadly, five powerful singers wailing away at once proved to be too much. It quickly turned into an oversinging competition,...

The Grammy Awards were handed out last night in L.A. -- and, in a surprise victory, Arcade Fire took home the coveted Album of the Year trophy. The band beat out favorites like Eminem and Lady Antebellum for the big award -- but it's not like those two went home empty handed. Lady Antebellum left with five trophies while Eminem nabbed two. Another shocking win last night was in the Best New Artist category, where Esperanza Spalding beat out more popular names like Justin Bieber and Florence and the Machine . There were plenty of awards to go around -- as Rihanna , Lady Gaga , Alicia Keys and Jay-z , John Legend and Miranda Lambert all grabbed a trophy or two as well. Pink moves on from empowering single "Raise You Glass" to another "loud and proud" track "F**kin' Perfect". The mom-to-be has recently filmed a music video for the second single in Los Angeles. She is pictured wearing a sun-colored halter dress and high heels despite her pregnancy.
Having Pink pleading her fans to be comfortable in their own skin, "F**kin' Perfect" is one of the new singles taken from her new compilation "Greatest Hits... It’s that time of the year already! The 53rd annual Grammy nominations (for 2011) were announced last night and it’s safe to say that Eminem made a clean sweep popping up in 10 categories. Love the Way you Lie is up for Song and Record of the Tear while Recovery has received nominations for Album and Rap Album of the Year. Just for a quick memory jog, remember who was a big winner at last year’s Grammys? Beyonce! Other big nominees this year include Bruno Mars with seven nominations, and Jay-z, Lady Gaga and Lady Antebellum with six each. John Legend and B.o.B follow closely with five. Katy Perry, who’s performing for VH1 Divas Salute the Troops (Sunday, Dec. 5, at 9/8c), scored four nominations, including one for Album of the Year for Teenage Dream.
