Rachel McAdams and Abby Ryder Fortson have been cast in “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” an adaptation of Judy Blume’s beloved coming-of-age book.
Fortson will play Margaret Simon, a sixth-grade girl who is going through puberty and searches the universe for any answers she can find. McAdams is portraying Margaret’s mother, Barbara.
The movie, set up at Lionsgate, will be written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig. It’s expected to begin production in April.
“Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” was first published in 1970 and remains hugely popular among young, budding readers. Blume has long been opposed to screen adaptations of her seminal work, a notable list that includes “Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing,” “Blubber,” “Forever” and “Tiger Eyes.” However, the upcoming version of “Are You There God?” — especially the casting — comes with Blume’s blessing.
“Abby is funny and tender, strong yet vulnerable.

In November 2016, the creative team behind “The Simpsons” began work on a special hour-long episode. It was a hip-hop parody of “The Great Gatsby” — laden with references to the Fox soap “Empire” — that would succeed or fail based on the music.
The problem, in the view of executive producer James Brooks, was the show’s 75-year-old composer. Alf Clausen had scored more than 500 episodes in 27 years on the show, penning such immortal work as “We Put the Spring in Springfield.” But the producers knew that hip-hop was well outside his comfort zone.
“Brooks questioned whether Clausen was the right person to prepare rap music and questioned his work more generally,” said Richard Sakai, a producer on the show, in a court declaration filed on Tuesday.
In a few months, Clausen would be ousted from the show. Last year, he filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against Fox and Brooks’ company, Gracie Films,...

Exclusive: In what will likely end in the first huge book to movie sale of the new year, producer James L. Brooks and writer/director Kelly Fremon Craig this week are in the mix with studios on a movie adaptation of the seminal Judy Blume book Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.
Deadline revealed last October that Blume, who turned down overtures for 50 years to adapt her most famous book adapted into a film, finally had a change of heart and granted rights Brooks, Craig and Gracie Films. They collaborated on The Edge Of Seventeen, the 2016 coming of age film that starred Hailee Steinfeld and which Craig wrote and directed. And which Blume loved.
Brooks is producing with Julie Ansell, Richard Sakai and Amy Brooks. Craig and Blume will also be producers. Back then, Brooks told Deadline that studios already had begun knocking, but that they would wait until they had the screenplay.

Alf Clausen, the longtime composer for The Simpsons who was fired from the show in 2017, filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against Fox and the show, claiming he was dismissed because of his age, Variety reports.
Clausen joined The Simpsons during its second season and worked on the show for 27 years. When he was let go in 2017, he said he received a call from Simpsons producer Richard Sakai, who said the show was seeking “a different kind of music.”
In his new lawsuit, filed Monday, Clausen countered, saying, “This reason was pretextual and false.
