Peacock will not be ordering a third season of Rutherford Falls, its comedy series co-created/executive produced by Sierra Teller Ornelas, Ed Helms and Mike Schur. The cancellation of the show, starring Helms and Jana Schmieding, comes two and a half months after the Season 2 premiere June 16. In a statement following the decision, Ornelas indicated that the series will explore finding a new home on another platform.
The critically acclaimed series, hailed for its Native representation both in front of and behind the camera, landed at Peacock in turnaround having been originally developed at Apple TV+. The Scene 2 Seen podcast is back!!
Sorry ya’ll. I had to go on a brief hiatus for July. With San Diego Comic-Con, Emmy nominations and my travel schedule, I took the time to sit down brainstorm some fresh ideas to add to the podcast.
I am excited to be publishing one episode a day between today and Friday of this week. Trust me it will be worth it as there are some awesome guests, beginning with today’s episode featuring Plains Cree actor Michael Greyeyes.
Greyeyes is from the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation from Canada has been in the acting business for over 30 years. He feels like he’s just now found his footing with his role on Peacock comedy series Rutherford Falls, which premiered its second season June 16.

Photo: ‘Rutherford Falls’ Mastery of the Craft When first tuning into the delightful and subtle comedy series ‘Rutherford Falls’ on Peacock, it strikes you as something you’ve seen before where a sense of deja vu takes you over and you just instantly slide into the characters and the concept of the show. It’s a rare and very impressive feat to accomplish, but given that the show is co-created by one of the most prolific TV writers of all time, Michael Schur, it comes as no surprise. Set in the fictional world, but could literally be anywhere in the northeast town of ‘Rutherford Falls’, the show follows Ed Helms in the titular role of Nathan Rutherford, an obnoxiously proud descendent of the small town’s founder Lawrence Rutherford. Way back in colonial times, Lawrence Rutherford brokered a truce with the local Native American tribe, the Minishonkan, and Helms has...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Season 2 of Rutherford Falls.] Rutherford Falls is back and electing a new mayor, but not without a few laughs along the way. On the ballot is Jesse Leigh‘s Bobbie Yang. As the assistant to Nathan Rutherford (Ed Helms), Bobbie’s loyalties were proven in Season 1, but in Season 2, they’re taking charge of their own future by running for office which has been left vacant by Deidre (Dana L. Wilson). With the support of Nathan and Terry Thomas (Michael Greyes), Bobbie works on connecting with the community around them in unique ways, like through creative makeup tutorials. The effort pays off by the time Season 2 comes to its conclusion and we’re catching up with Leigh who is opening up about non-binary and LGBTQ+ representation through Bobbie’s story, the creative collaboration with creators Sierra Teller Ornelas, Helms, and Mike Schur, along with much more. After a first season spent reckoning with the past, with an inconveniently located statue of a dead white colonialist as the jumping-off point, Peacock’s Rutherford Falls is ready to look forward.
As characters like Reagan (Jana Schmieding) and Terry (Michael Greyeyes) start dreaming big for the town in general and for its Minishonka community more specifically, the storylines become defined less by conflict than cooperation, yielding a series that feels sweeter, more relaxed, less bogged down by the gravity of the past — but also one that seems to render its own white-guy co-lead less necessary than ever.
Initially, though, it looks like business as usual. Basically as soon as Nathan Rutherford (Ed Helms) returns to town in the second season premiere, he seems to fall back into his old habit of making everything about him. “I am a Nathan that knows I...

Hannah Einbinder and Jana Schmieding landed plum roles in two of this year’s most buzzed-about comedy series: “Hacks” and “Rutherford Falls.” For each this marks a first foray into acting after years of toiling as a stand-up comic. And each is paired with a veteran performer in their acclaimed new shows. Einbinder spars with Emmy darling Jean Smart while Schmieding is stealing scenes from Ed Helms. A version of this story about Jana Schmieding first appeared in the Comedy & Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
For years, Jana Schmieding was pretty sure of one thing: She wasn’t cut out for television. A Lakota Sioux comedian, writer and podcaster, she’d grown up in Oregon rarely seeing anybody like her on TV — and even when she tried pitching pilots about the community she’d come from, she got nowhere.
“I saw people on TV sometimes who looked like my ancestors,” she said. “Most of the time, indigenous folks on television or in film are relegated to what we call ‘feathers and leather.’ We’re trapped in the past, and there are very few contemporary (Native) television characters. I had to find people like me in characters like Darlene from ‘Roseanne,’ because she was the daughter of an overbearing mom.”

“We really wanted to reflect the lives of the native writers on the show,” reveals Sierra Teller Ornelas about “Rutherford Falls.” For our recent webchat, she continues, “We had five native writers including myself. I am viscerally averse to the word ‘authentic’ because I think it should only be for food. But, I wanted it to feel like it actually feels in the room in tandem with it being super funny.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Ornelas is the showrunner for “Rutherford Falls,” which she co-created with Ed Helms and Michael Schur. The Peacock comedy series is about a town of the same name and the friendship of Reagan Wells (Jana Schmieding) and Nathan Rutherford (Helms). The town descends into conflict when plans are made to take down the statue honoring an ancestor of Nathan’s. The controversy prompts the local Minishonka tribe to pursue litigation against Nathan about land rights claims.

“At its core, comedy is a commentary on the culture of power,” reflects “Rutherford Falls” actor and writer Jana Schmieding. For our recent webchat she continues, “Native people have been using comedy to explore our pain and our trauma as long as we’ve existed. We had indigenous comedy culture and clown culture before colonialism really took a lot of those cultural touchstones from us. This feels like a really exciting opportunity for us to rebuild and reshape what native comedy could look like. These experiences that these native characters are having on ‘Rutherford Falls’ are understandable. We’re hitting those broader social issues that affect indigenous people. But doing it with a wink and a smile that tells people it’s safe to talk about this.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

“Rutherford Falls” is a story about who tells our stories, who is allowed to make history, and who ends up relegated to the sidelines. That narrative also extends to the creation of the new Peacock series. “Rutherford Falls” is the brainchild of Mike Schur, Ed Helms, and Sierra Teller Ornelas, and for Ornelas especially, it was a chance to create a space for Native storytellers.
Ornelas needed a break after producing the long-running sitcom, “Superstore,” but, more importantly, she wanted to branch out on her own. “I’d worked for almost 10 years, at that time, on other people’s shows,” Ornelas told IndieWire. “I really wanted to do a Native anthology that was my idea that I was developing.” Her manager directed her to Schur, who was developing a series that had Native themes within it.

And, of course, her cultural center
(Warning: This post contains spoilers through the Season 1 finale of Peacock’s “Rutherford Falls.”)
The last few minutes of the 10th and final episode of Peacock’s “Rutherford Falls” Season 1 take viewers through a real roller coaster of closure and uncertainty, as best friends Reagan Wells (Jana Schmieding) and Nathan Rutherford (Ed Helms) finally make up. Nathan, whose brain is basically broken after finding out he’s not a Rutherford, but a D’Angelo, apologizes to Reagan for only thinking of himself and his desires to uphold his legacy over hers to uphold her Native community’s. And she tells him she is far from fully “getting it” as he thinks she does, and that no one is ever fully in the right over someone else.

When Ross Riege was in initial conversations for “Rutherford Falls” with fellow cinematographer and now director Lawrence Sher (Dp on Todd Phillips’ “Joker”), one of the ideas was how to explore the quirkiness of a small town.
The new Peacock sitcom, which premiered April 22, stars Ed Helms as Nathan Rutherford, a descendant of the town’s founder, who is on a mission to stop the removal of the burg’s emblematic statue. Not only is the statue the cause of numerous car accidents, but it has a problematic history.
The Coen brothers’ “Fargo” served as the main visual reference for the way the filmmakers portrayed the community and those within it. “It was this classic thing of what character the town plays, as well as what the characters play,” explains Riege.
The Dp describes Nathan as someone who is lovable and has the best of intentions, “but he doesn’t realize his history.

The story of a small town honoring its dead white ancestors with a statue that, later on, causes problems has been news fodder for the last few years. But the premise of the new Peacock series “Rutherford Falls,” is: What if that was funny? And while there certainly is entertainment to be mined from the series, it’s not in regard to its central protagonist.
“Rutherford Falls” is about the town of the same name, and its biggest cheerleader Nathan Rutherford (Ed Helms). Nathan runs the town’s historical museum, where he documents the exploits of his ancestors that includes harmless pursuits like exterminating a rampant possum population and making a peaceful treaty with the local Native tribe, the Minneshonka.
But when the massive statues of Nathan’s ancestor, dubbed “Big Larry,” causes traffic jams because it is in the middle of the road, it’s an opportunity for Nathan...

“The Good Place” creator Mike Schur brought his comedy talents back to your TV on Thursday with the premiere of his new Peacock comedy “Rutherford Falls.” Co-created by Schur, Ed Helms and Sierra Teller Ornelas, the show follows Nathan Rutherford (played by Helms) and his lifelong best friend Reagan Wells (Jana Schmieding), whose relationship is challenged in the first episode when the people of their upstate New York town, Rutherford Falls, demand a statue of Nathan’s ancestor, Lawrence “Big Larry” Rutherford, be moved from its hazardous location in the middle of a road. Reagan, a member of the Minishonka Nation who inhabited the area before Nathan’s family arrived, agrees it’s time for Big Larry to go.

The most memorable moment of “Rutherford Falls” — featuring two characters sitting opposite each other and just talking with startling honesty — deviates sharply from the show’s established norm. Otherwise, the new comedy from Ed Helms, Sierra Teller Ornelas and uber-producer Michael Schur focuses on hapless heir Nathan Rutherford (Helms) trying to preserve his family legacy while his childhood best friend Reagan works to do the same for her tribe — which, to say the least, has a complicated relationship to the Rutherfords who first “settled” the town years ago. In the first four episodes screened for critics, as the increasingly complicated plot takes over.
In the fourth episode, when “Rutherford Falls” gets laser-focused on making a specific point, and even deadly serious about it, it makes for a genuinely jarring scene — but also, in the absence of another distinct center, a welcome one.

When Sierra Teller Ornelas was in pre-production on her new Peacock comedy “Rutherford Falls,” she found inspiration in a quote she read from showrunner Prentice Penny describing his movie “Uncorked” as “This is Black people on a Tuesday.”
The film, which follows a young man on his quest to become a master sommelier, did not take place at a major life event such as a wedding, nor did it result in tragedy; it told a slice of life story. And that was what Teller Ornelas wanted to do with “Rutherford Falls,” a show that centers on the relationships between members of a Native American reservation and the residents of the neighboring titular town.
“We were very fortunate to show Native people as complex people who have multiple points of view,” she tells Variety. “For us to be mundane, to not be trauma porn people, to just be human beings that...

The seed of Peacock’s new sitcom Rutherford Falls — set in a Northeastern town next door to a Native American reservation — emerged from conversations between Ed Helms and Michael Schur, but its spiritual origins may well have come from the comedy hitmaker’s Parks and Recreation, too. Like that earlier series, Rutherford Falls is a formally familiar show with a big, searching heart, that asks unexpectedly tough questions about how best to serve a community and foster a sense of belonging among its members. This review contains no spoilers and is based on the first four episodes of Rutherford Falls.
Rutherford Falls, the new Peacock comedy from Ed Helms, Sierra Teller Ornelas, and co-creator Michael Schur, owes a lot to Schur’s previous series, Parks and Recreation. Not only does Rutherford Falls have its mind on civics, community, and bureaucracy, it also aims to have a lived-in quality, with a focus on world-building. In the four episodes screened for critics, Rutherford Falls makes a concerted effort to give every member of the Northeast community a name and a voice, much like the citizens of Pawnee.
Another quality that the fictional Rutherford Falls and Pawnee have in common is their complicated histories with native communities. However, whereas Leslie Knope shrugged and resigned herself to the fact that that the murals in city hall showcased horrific treatment of the Wamapo tribe, the characters of Rutherford Falls are taking a long,...

Change is coming to “Rutherford Falls,” and Ed Helms is Not happy about that.
In the new Peacock comedy from Helms, Mike Schur and Sierra Teller Ornelas, Nathan Rutherford (Helms) is the proud descendant of his small town’s founder. But the centrally located — and we do mean centrally — statue of “Big Larry” Rutherford has become problematic.
Not for the reasons we’re used to hearing about in the real world these days — or at least, not initially — but in a much more practical way.
You see, the statue of Lawrence Rutherford was placed in the middle of the road (or more likely the road was built around Big Larry) downtown, and cars seem to be very attracted to it lately. We can’t have that.

One of the central themes of Peacock’s upcoming Michael Schur-Ed Helms comedy “Rutherford Falls” is an examination of the role that historical statues play in our understanding of history, a particularly timely storyline given the renewed debates surrounding Confederate monuments.
“I would say the existence of Confederate and historical statues and their controversies going way back fed into these ideas that we were bouncing around,” Helms said during a Television Critics Association press tour on Monday. “But there wasn’t a specific series of events in recent history that triggered it.”
“Rutherford Falls,” co-created by Helms, Schur and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” alum Sierra Teller Ornelas, centers on a fictional small town in upstate New York and the Native American reservation it borders. The series begins when the town is turned upside down when local legend and town namesake, Nathan Rutherford (Helms) fights the moving of a historical statue.
