Daphne Rubin-Vega was born on November 18, 1968 in Panama City, Panama. She is an actress and producer, known for Wild Things (1998), In the Heights (2021) and Sex and the City (2008). She has been married to Tommy Costanzo since September 2002. They have one child.
The costumes that she wore in the Original Broadway Company of RENT
were from her own closet. The clothes inspired a line of RENT-related
clothes in Bloomingdales (1996). Still lives in the New York apartment
that she has been in since before the RENT phenomenon.
Was a member of the pop trio "Pajama Party" before heading to Broadway
to star in "Rent". They scored a number one club hit with the song "Yo
No Se".
She and Fredi Walker (Joanne) were the only two original Broadway cast
members who did not reprise their roles in the movie version of "Rent."
Daphne did not reprise her role due to pregnancy and the role of Mimi
was played on film by Rosario Dawson. Fredi refused the movie role
because she thought she had aged beyond what the audience would
believe; the role of Joanne in the movie was played by Tracie
Thoms.
Was born in Panama.
Has a son, Luca Ariel Constanzo, born on December 5, 2004.
We didn't want to go to Broadway to become Broadway stars; we went to kick the motherf***in' doors of Broadway open, because it's old-school and it's stodgy. We were invited there, and that was cool.
