This post contains major spoilers for "X."
A bloody deconstruction of the slasher genre, Ti West's "X" features an ensemble cast that isn't afraid of getting its hands dirty, in more ways than one. The film revolves around a group of filmmakers looking to make an adult film in the middle of nowhere, as one normally does. A subversive narrative gives thematic weight to it all, but "X" has just as much fun with the gory bits of the genre. While Maxine Minx (Mia Goth) is the central driving force of "X," Jenna Ortega especially impresses as Lorraine, an initially shy Christian girl that slowly but surely sheds her conservative shell. That is, until she dies, of course.
After nearly every other crew member of the porn production met their untimely deaths, the remaining survivors, Lorraine and Maxine, were left trying to escape the killer's home. Regretting her involvement in the entire ordeal,...

Name a bigger surprise success story in 2022 in the horror genre than Ti West's "X" — it won't be easy. This A24 slasher was released way back in March and was a critical and box office success. "X" currently holds a 94 approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed 14 million on a budget of just 1 million, according to Box Office Mojo. Even before its success, there was a clear level of faith in this project. So much so that writer-director Ti West wrote a prequel titled "Pearl" and shot it back-to-back with "X." Moreover, the film was an original slasher film with an all-star cast that included Kid Cudi, 2022's Scream Queen Jenna Ortega, and last but not least, Mia Goth.
Those who have seen "X" probably are aware that there was a double dose of Goth since she had two roles in the film. The first was as...

Ti West’s X delivered gnarly kills and unforgettable characters, both villains and protagonists alike. At the forefront of it all is actress Mia Goth, who plays not one, but two lead roles in the ’70s set slasher. Goth’s Maxine is the aspiring actress looking for fame, but Goth’s unrecognizable portrayal of Pearl is less obvious. The aged […]

Spoiler Warning: The following article contains spoilers on two character deaths. Ti West delivered no shortage of memorable, gnarly deaths in his slasher, X. Each one different than the last, and most of them gruesome and bloody. The filmmaker previously shared with Bloody Disgusting that the first kill, that of aspiring director Rj (Owen Campbell), “was meant to say, […]

Books about the art design of mainstream movies can be lavish tomes filled with conceptual drawings and paintings, but the better ones devote a decent amount of space on their pages to the artists that thought up these fantastic worlds. This approach was done for Titan Books most recent coffee table release, Elysium: The Art of the Film, which details the creation of director Neill Blomkamp's dystopic world of 2154. At 176 pages, Titan's Elysium tome covers the art design from the film in a good way that won't leave you regretting your purchasing decision, if you crave to know more about the influences and reasoning that went into the Elysium universe.
Former Empire editor Mark Salisbury wrote the text that accompanies the artwork on the pages, and it's well chosen so that you get a decent background on the decisions that Blomkamp and his head creative team made for...
