German-Jewish artist Charlotte Salomon, who was murdered in Auschwitz at age 26, and her autobiographical masterwork “Life? or Theatre?,” which was created in a two-year burst in the early 1940s, are the subjects of “Charlotte,” a unique animated biopic drama that marks a career turning point for Toronto producer Julia Rosenberg.
Rosenberg first encountered “Life? or Theatre?” — which comprises hundreds of gouache paintings, a 32,000-word journey-of-an-artist tale filled with dark family secrets and numerous text overlays and music cues — as a bat mitzvah gift. She soon developed “a very possessive personal relationship” with the book. “It’s the book I would buy and give when I fell in love,” she said.
After a decade racking up producer credits on notable Canadian dramatic and documentary features, Rosenberg decided one morning in 2012 that an animated film should be made of Salomon’s life, and set about harnessing her passion and wide network to make it so.

Snorri Thórisson, CEO of Reykjavík-based production outfit Pegasus Pictures (Icelandic line producer of Game Of Thrones), has revealed details of the company’s latest feature projects.
One of the most ambitious projects the company is hatching is The Falcons.
The feature will tell the remarkable story of the Winnipeg Falcons, the ice hockey team made up almost entirely of Icelandic immigrants that won Canada’s first ever gold medal at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp. These immigrants had been treated as outsiders but became national heroes.
The Canadian partner is Julia Rosenberg and Thórisson is putting The Falcons together as an Iceland-Canada co-production using the treaty between the countries.
The film is based on the book When Falcons Fly by David Square, which Thórisson has now re-optioned. An earlier attempt by Thórisson to make the film foundered but the Pegasus boss is confident the film will go ahead this time round. The feature...

Randy Quaid and Jay Baruchel will star in the indie dramedy Real Time.
Randall Cole will direct from a screenplay he wrote. Julia Rosenberg, Paula Devonshire and Ari Lantos are producing.
The film centers on a hit man (Quaid) who gives an old acquaintance (Baruchel), a compulsive gambler, one hour to live.
Real Time is being financed by Serendipity Point Films, Telefilm Canada and Corus Entertainment and produced by January Films, Devonshire Prods. and APB Pictures. Maple Pictures will distribute the film in Canada, and Serendipity Point Films will handle worldwide sales.
Cole is a graduate of Norman Jewison's Canadian Film Center, where he made his first feature, 19 Months. Real Time will be shot outside Toronto.
Quaid's credits include The Ice Harvest and Brokeback Mountain and the upcoming Goya's Ghosts and Gary the Tennis Coach. He is repped by IFA Talent and attorney Matt Galsor.
Baruchel, who recently signed on to co-star in the Ben Stiller-helmed Tropic Thunder, next will appear in Judd Apatow's summer comedy Knocked Up. He is handled by CAA, Thruline Entertainment and attorney Jamie Feldman.

TORONTO -- Canadian production executive Julia Rosenberg said Tuesday that she is creating her own shingle, January Films, through a housekeeping deal with Robert Lantos' Serendipidity Point Films. Rosenberg, who worked in development for three years at producer Alliance Communications Corp. before moving with Lantos to form Serendipidity Point Films in 1998, said she will develop her own projects through the new production company. At the same time, Rosenberg said she will continue helping develop the Serendipidity Point film slate. Recent international co-productions from that production house include the Annette Bening starrer Being Julia and The Statement, which stars Michael Caine.
