This must be what it was like the first time someone decided to combine peanut butter and chocolate. Sure, it might not make the most obvious sense that indie weirdos Deerhoof and Michael Shannon go together, but now, we can't imagine them apart. The band has just dropped their latest album La Isla Bonita, and of course, the "Boardwalk Empire" star features in the video for "Exit Only." Because there would just be no other way. The concept for the video, directed by Vice Cooler, is pretty simple: Michael Shannon interrogates Michael Shannon with some destructive, mind-control like fury. There’s no question when it comes the originality and overall infectious aura of cool that springs from a band like Deerhoof. They’re the filet of the music menu. During October, the release month of their latest album “Offend Maggie,” Deerhoof played to a packed house at the Metro in Chicago. Writer Nelson Carvajal sits down with Deerhoof and talks about their improvisational background, quest for continual creativity and those awful “indie” references.
