Warner Archive: 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark'

31 August 2009 2:58 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

From out of the blue Warner Bros. sent over three titles from their recently launched Warner Archive collection, a program the studio began back in March of 2009 allowing consumers to purchase and/or watch on demand several previously unreleased movies on DVD for the first time. I have not heard anything recently on the program's successes, but I know when it first launched it was a huge hit and the studio was actually surprised by the demand. Considering I have a limited knowledge when it comes to unreleased titles my excitement wasn't all that severe outside of an interest in purchasing Francis Ford Coppola's 1968 debut The Rain People (how about sending that one over Warner?). However, when films arrive unexpectedly I can't help but get look their way as my curiosity in the lesser seen films continues to rise in hopes of finding hidden gems outside the realms of the classics. »

Guy Pearce Admits Being ‘Afraid Of The Dark’

30 June 2009 10:18 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Guy Pearce has joined Katie Holmes in the upcoming remake of Don't Be Afraid of the Dark.  The movie starts production next month in Australia per The Hollywood Reporter, and is being produced by Guillermo del Toro who also co-wrote the script along with Matthew Robbins (Dragonslayer, Mimic). The original film involved a young couple who move into their dream house but soon discover it's actually a nightmare abode!  Or something.  Kim Darby, who played the wife, discovers strange, little creatures living in the basement, but when she tries to tell people about them everyone thinks she's just having women troubles.  Everyone, including her husband, doubts her claims and she's left to deal with the demonic little bastards on her own.  It doesn't end well... and it's actually pretty goddamn creepy for a TV movie. Per THR, the remake is shaking up the story a bit by adding a child into the mix.  Bailee Madison »

Pearce Going to 'Dark' Side

30 June 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- Chalk one more independent production up for Guy Pearce. Soon to be seen in his second collaboration with John Hillcoat's The Road and currently can be seen in Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker, the actor is currently in final negotiations to play the annoyed author/father who is fed up with his daughter's distractions in Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. Sounds like an author and parent we know from Kubrick's The Shining. The Hollywood Reporter reports that the actor might be joining the project while the daughter role has been filled out by a young, but already veteran actress in Bailee Madison. Scripted by Guillermo Del Toro and Matthew Robbins, this is based on a remake of the 1973 ABC TV movie. This centers on a young girl, sent to live with her father and his new girlfriend (played by Katie Holmes), who discovers sinister creatures that live underneath the stairs. »

Get Ready for Radu Mihaileanu's 'The Concert' in the Fall

22 June 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- They might be in a tight spot right now, but at the end of the rainbow The Weinstein Co. have Rob Marshall's Nine, John Hillcoat's The Road (Dimension) and Andrew Jarecki's All Good Things. Sight unseen, I imagine they're all Oscar bait potential and have the ingredients to be profitable, but there is one title that might see the financially troubled unit regain some of that glitter from the old Miramax days (where they grabbed a film with subtitles and made American audiences fall for them. E.g: Pelle the Conqueror, Cinema Paradiso, Mediterraneo, Koyla.) Radu Mihaileanu's The Concert was a packaged and sold Wild Bunch item that the Weinsteins pre-emptively picked up at last year's Cannes, and now currently in post-production, the film is probably setting its sights on a double preem at Venice and Tiff in the fall. Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, Katie Holmes

I don't know if I like the idea of Katie Holmes in a thriller, as I can't remember a single time when she's shown convincing distress. Well, maybe a couple seconds in Go, but that's it. Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, however, does have a lot going for it, so maybe this is her breakout moment.
