Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the best TV show — former or current — that handles mental illness well?
Joyce Eng (@joyceeng61), TVGuide.com
“Bojack Horseman,” especially Season 4, is almost peerless when it comes to a raw, honest portrayal of mental health. His depression and anxiety aren’t deployed as plot devices like we’ve seen plenty of times elsewhere; they’re just part of him and none of it is rubbed in your face. He’s allowed to be, break down, self-destruct, and the show never offers quick fixes or easy answers. “Stupid Piece of Sh*t” is a brutal depiction, even if you don’t suffer from depression or anxiety,...

Forget congratulatory flowers or chocolates. After winning her Oscar for Best Actress earlier this year, Emma Stone received an unexpected gift from Jimmy Kimmel.
“He sent underwear for , like rubber underwear, so he’s wearing tighty-whities,” Stone, 28, explains in the latest issue of People. “Jimmy said, ‘I’d like to bring some decency into your home.'”
When asked where she keeps her award, Stone says she allows one very important person to look after it.
“My mom holds on to it,” she says.

Even in a project as mammoth as “The Defiant Ones,” director Allen Hughes still points to one installment of the four-part series as an especially daunting task: the feature-length third episode, premiering Tuesday night on HBO.
What began as a one-off project quickly grew to, in Hughes’ mind, a potential five part series. Hughes explained as part of a recent interview with IndieWire that a fateful conversation with HBO VP of Programming Nina Rosenstein. (Hughes describes her as “my godmother at HBO.”)
“At one point, I was like ‘Nina, I’m telling you, it’s five.’ I was fighting Jimmy and Dre on that, as well. Nina said, ‘It’s four.’ I said, ‘But, mathematically, that’s gonna make my job–‘ She goes, ‘Yeah, but that’s what it is. It’s four.’ I took that as a challenge. I said fuck it. That’s why Part 3 is like ‘Apocalypse Now.

While doing press in January for the third season of “Playing House,” co-creators, writers, stars and real-life best friends Jessica St. Clair and Lennon Parham hinted that they shared a major bonding experience that they had written into the show. But they decided to keep mum about it until early May, when St. Clair revealed in a post on the StandUp2Cancer website that she had underwent treatment for breast cancer, with her best friend by her side every step of the way.

The duo had worried that introducing such a serious storyline into the show wouldn’t feel organic or that it would overpower the comedy, but that fear was unfounded. “Playing House” is funnier, more in tune with its beating heart of comedy than ever, because of how the battle with cancer brought the two friends closer together.
Making the series after that was an exercise in gratitude, and the show exudes positivity, hope and joy through every line and scene. If anything, “Playing House” balances out its humor and multiple storylines so well that it’s actually easy to forget that the cancer plot is coming until it happens. And then bam — right there amidst the laughter — a feeling of being blindsided and stunned. And then come the tears.
This is what sets “Playing House” and a few other powerful comedies apart from the pack — their ability to bring genuine pathos and character growth into a genre that usually favors cautious inertia. The series is fearless: It’s unafraid to change, to evolve, to grow up.
When the show began, Maggie (Parham) left her cheating husband just before she’s about to have their baby. Her best friend Emma (St. Clair) leaves behind her job overseas to move in with Maggie to help raise the baby together. But this season, it’s Maggie who’s supportive of Emma through the hard times. In between single motherhood and cancer, the friends are consistently there for each other through all the changes: reentering the world of dating (with a hot new British doctor played by Ben Willbond), turning 40, having a healthy relationship with exes, career changes, and raising children. Aging isn’t a cause for mourning or denial, but is celebrated and yes, mocked mercilessly.

Early on in Season 3, when Emma is considering sleeping with an ex she knew in high school, the following exchange takes place:

What’s beautiful about their relationship is that Maggie doesn’t even hesitate to answer in the most earnest and detailed manner possible. Oh yes, “Playing House” is crass, inappropriate, silly, but most of all vital. This season might be about embracing all the ups and downs of age 40, but it doesn’t act its age. Emma and Maggie’s lust for life and sharing is infectious, so much so that a new character introduced in the first episode gets visibly verklempt after hearing about the extent of the women’s friendship. Nobody is immune to the power of their triumphant and gleeful bond.
As strong as their friendship is though, it is not exclusive. Characters on the show get swept up in their wake, only to be embraced as extended family. And while some of the scenes featuring these characters without the benefit of the Bff presence or chemistry falter a bit, that too is part of the growing and learning process. This season we see more of exes Mark (Keegan-Michael Key), Bruce (Brad Morris), Zach (Zach Woods) and even Tina, aka “Bird Bones” (Lindsay Sloane), among a slew of others who are game to ditch their dignity for laughs. And in a way, we the audience are invited into that circle of friends as well.
St. Clair and Parham deciding to incorporate their partnered cancer battle into the show isn’t just brave or smart; it’s generous. And that’s true of how the show has operated from the beginning. Sure, their friendship is a pleasure to watch and even aspirational in its strength, but sharing it in all of its imperfect glory — warts, tumors and all — is the ultimate in honest communication, trust and building a community. We’ve been invited into the house to play, and it’s exactly where we want to be.
Grade: B+

With the Season 3 finale fast approaching, this week’s Better Call Saul had big consequences for Jimmy and Kim, as their career paths veered sharply in opposite directions. (“Veered” being the operative word.)

The “Bob’s Burgers Music Album” is coming your way May 12, and it’s loaded up with more goodies than a Poutine on the Ritz Burger.
This is not the time to be modern and go the digital route for your music. Hell, even buying the CDs isn’t old-school enough. Instead, if you buy the the “Bob’s Burgers Music Album” deluxe limited-edition gift box, that comes with three LPs (in “condiment-colored” vinyl?!), a Bob’s Buskers seven-inch white vinyl LP, a hardbound lyric book (for those times you need to know more than just “Butts, Butts, Butts”), a sheet music collection, three original posters and a lot more. What is “more” you ask? Take a look at the unboxing video below featuring Teddy’s hairy arms and mumbly narration to see everything:
Of course, the two-cd album is still chockfull of “Bob’s Burgers” audio goodness, which amounts to 107 songs.

When “The Young Pope” debuted overseas, America kept quiet. Premiering at the Venice Film Festival in September 2016 and then on Italian TV in late October, Jude Law devotees and Paolo Sorrentino aficionados were aware, but little spirit — holy or otherwise — survived the trip across the pond. Even when HBO announced the premiere date and sent out a trailer in early December, it took another month for the series to catch fire and send white smoke billowing from the internet’s chimney.

I’ve often thought that more filmmakers should sit and properly watch the first half of Alien. Ridley Scott’s masterpiece is rightly lauded for its tension, for its outstanding production design, and for its ability to genuinely creep under your skin. But one of the key reasons, for me, that it feels so special is that it does so much quality foundation work with its characters. That an extraordinary situation is made to feel ordinary, by a bunch of people moaning and grumbling about everyday things, rather than talking in philosophic soliloquies, as too many modern characters seem to do.

In a photo posted on Jimmy's Twitter page and the talk show's Instagram page, the little girl is seen sitting in Jimmy's chair at his desk while her dad sits in one of the guests' chairs. "I've been replaced. #TakeYourKidToWorkDay," the former host tweeted. Jane looks right at home, wearing an adorable printed top and staring at the stage as she sits in her leather chair with her dad's notes placed in front of her on the glossy wooden desk, set against a...

Sometimes life can get a little hectic if we don't take the time to relax. Take a break with this calming video of a Seal floating away into Enya oblivion. The Vine has over 9 million views as it's literally the most mesmerizing thing to watch that many times in a row. Don't even play like you haven't already brought the loop total up an extra million. Stare into the seal's eyes as you melt away to the soothing sounds of spa music. We're unsure any song other than "Only Time" could convey the powerful emotion in this video. The Vine was uploaded by user Jimmy Glansberg, who may or may not have just saved you from another dreadful work week. Let this Internet gold guide you down the path of...

Ray guns! Space armadas! Storm troopers! Toei's manga became a pricey 3-D animated motion capture epic just three years ago, but was denied a release stateside. Working across a wide range of musical mediums, Ivor Novello Award-winning and BAFTA-nominated composer Daniel Pemberton has embraced everything from large scale orchestral and choral works to innovative electronic sound design, live salsa bands to post-rock guitar line-ups.
From The Counselor, The Awakening and the upcoming Steve Jobs film, to name a few, Pemberton has delivered another eclectic score – this time Guy Ritchie’s latest movie The Man From U.N.C.L.E., in theatres Friday, August 14.
Fans of the TV show are familiar with the theme music from composer Jerry Goldsmith, with additional music for the various seasons provided by Morton Stevens, Walter Scharf, Lalo Schifrin, Gerald Fried, Robert Drasnin and Nelson Riddle.
Now comes the film version and a 5-star, international score that exudes the 1960’s as if it was pulled from a time vault. You’re right into the film from the first musical note and drum beat.

A review of tonight's "Better Call Saul" coming up just as soon as I use double ply... There is a truth inherent to the prequel business: you can't change or prevent what your audience knows is coming for these characters. Sometimes, prequels use this to their advantage, whether great ones (where the young Vito scenes in "Godfather Part II" only enhance our feelings for the Brando version of the character), or less-great ones (where whatever emotional power the "Star Wars" prequels have comes from the knowledge of what's going to become of Anakin). Sometimes, though, having to stick to pre-established facts about your characters' future can be a drag, as we're seeing a lot this season on "Gotham."(*) (*) Another good example of prequelitis: "Comanche Moon," the last "Lonesome Dove" novel to be published, but set before the events of the first, has our heroes chasing after a bad guy the...

Solid ground doesn’t exist in the cinema of Jaume Collet-Serra and Liam Neeson. Theirs is an action cinema of distress where the mental instability of each protagonist blurs the boundaries of seemingly tight spatial parameters. Conflict unfolds violently and manipulatively within manmade (and psychological) bubbles, as vast as the multiple boroughs of New York City or as small as the cramped fuselage of a passenger jet. There is no escape, only the desperate and unflinching pursuit of truth, moral direction, and family safety. The bad guys often win, but the good guys always gain closure.Angular compositions and desperate tracking shots populate 2011’s Unknown, 2014’s Non-Stop, and 2015’s Run All Night. Images overlap, tip, ascend and dive to visualize the world as one big box of quick sand. The camera propels through space like a boomerang, challenging logic and defying gravity with reckless abandon. Every step forward brings us...

Slippin' Jimmy slides even further down that slippery moral slope in this week's entertaining episode of Better Call Saul...
This review contains spoilers.
1.4 Hero
“You’re the kind of lawyer guilty people hire,” Betsy Kettleman tells Jimmy McGill, matter-of-factly. It’s one of comparatively few instances in another very good episode of Better Call Saul where someone straightforwardly tells someone else the truth. Mostly, from the Kettlemans burbling about “human slavery” to Jimmy trying way too hard to convince his brother that nothing dodgy is afoot, it’s wall-to-wall bullshitting, with people lying to themselves and to each other left, right and centre.
What’s more, Jimmy knows that it’s true. You can see it in his eyes, and in what it spurs him on to do. His blustering and attempts to take umbrage at the very idea of someone offering him a bribe are half-hearted at best, but...

If you're in a bind, then you'd better call Saul. But if Jimmy McGill is in trouble -- he's calling Nacho.
After only three episodes, we at ETonline are wildly obsessed with AMC's Breaking Bad prequel, Better Call Saul, starring the incomparable Bob Odenkirk, and the best part is that this addicting drama is only just beginning.
Michael Mando -- best known to Orphan Black fans as Vic, Sarah's drug-dealing ex -- is leaving the world of clones behind, and fully embracing his badass side as Nacho Varga, the right-hand-man to one of the most iconic villains in Breaking Bad history: Tuco Salamanca (Raymond Cruz).
"To understand what makes a man like that tick is very interesting," Mando told ETonline of stepping into his new on-screen alter ego. "Someone who is that intelligent, and patient, and dangerous is very interesting. I always find myself asking what is his objective and how does one become like that?"

With its clipped montages set to rock music, its stark Mojave Desert landscapes and its sizzling close-ups, few shows on television have ever looked as bold or beautiful as Breaking Bad. Better Call Saul has called upon Arthur Albert, who photographed two of that series’ final episodes, to do prime cinematography duties here. It also helps that the show’s first two hours are helmed by two of Breaking Bad’s most esteemed directors, creator Vince Gilligan and, with tonight’s episode, producer Michelle MacLaren.
The former series’ sharp visual sense returns in style during the second premiere hour, “Mijo.” The deep staging in sequences with Tuco and his grandmother, the harsh natural lighting of sandy desert patches during a similarly heated conversation between Tuco and Jimmy, and that sleek courtroom montage near the episode’s climax are nods to its predecessor’s look and feel. The familiar style makes sense,...

Better Call Saul, Season 1, Episode 1: “Uno”
Written by Vince Gilligan & Peter Gould
Directed by Vince Gilligan
Airs Mondays at 10Pm Est on AMC
Right from the opening moments of Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan’s highly anticipated prequel to his aforementioned AMC hit, brows will furrow and heads will be scratched.
Utilizing the cold open format that became a trademark of Breaking Bad, Gilligan places us into an immediately confusing and unfamiliar situation, with Saul Goodman working a low-level job at a Cinnabon. Nothing is made clear initially about this particular fact, and it isn’t until we see his paranoia concerning a somewhat intimidating customer that we draw the conclusion that this scene might even take place after Breaking Bad. Shot in black and white and almost completely dialogue free, this sequence ends with Saul sitting alone in his living room and re-living his glory...

Film ‘Jupiter Ascending’ rises to absurd and hilarious heights
That sound you’re hearing is a massive sigh of relief from David Lynch. He no longer holds the dubious distinction of producing the most expensive B-movie in the history of Hollywood. That honor now belongs to The Wachowskis, whose Jupiter Ascending has officially displacedDune at the top (or bottom) of the heap. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, however. Jupiter Ascending not only looks spectacular, it’s a laugh riot. Ridiculous dialogue, hammy performances, and enough mythology to baffle Zeus make this disaster a must-see for all lovers of cheese… read the full article.

CBS still hasn't chosen which actress will play Supergirl/Kara Danvers in their new television series based on the DC Comics' character, nor have they cast anyone in any role. So, it is not surprising that audition videos for the show would appear online and five of them have. Check them out below, but be warned that some of the dialogue might actually be from the show, thus there could be... spoilers! Take for example the first three videos, they feature actors reading for the part of photographer Jimmy Olsen. In them, Jimmy is recounting the heroics of Superman saving a family from a burning building to Kara, who wanted to know if Jimmy was scared of Superman's superpowers when he first observed them. Based on the scene, Kara will be working alongside Jimmy. The next video is of a young actress auditioning for Kara/Supergirl She is reading the same dialogue.

2014’s been a strong year for new comedies: Benched, Playing House, Selfie and Enlisted all established themselves as must-watch shows early on, though only Benched appears it will remain on the air until its season finale (and Playing House was finally renewed last week by USA!). However, all of these well-received comedies pale in comparison to one particular show: You’re the Worst, which debuted alongside Married this summer as part of FX’s new foray into rom-com – and quickly became one of the best comedies on television, new or old. Starring Chris Greerre and Aya Cash as Jimmy and Gretchen, You’re the Worst is a show that eschews traditional cliches and tropes at every angle. The stars sleep together in the first five minutes, first of all – and from there, the show steps back and watches two messy characters try to make sense of their damaged emotions, pushing...

A couple of weeks ago we speculated who Scoot McNairy would be playing in his mystery role in the Zack Snyder film Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice. With green socks spotted on his person in a candid photo from the set, a lot of possibilities cropped up that dealt with robotic or prosthetic legs. It was even widely rumored that McNairy would be playing The Flash and that the socks were so the animators could give him extremely fast feet. According to a gigantic rumor we found online, we were way off. Newcomers The Devil's Eyes spoke with an unnamed extra who ventured to give them a supposed scoop on who Scoot McNairy is playing in Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice. Four new scripted shows debut tonight: two dramas on USA ("Rush" at 9, "Satisfaction" at 10), two comedies on FX ("Married" at 10, "You're the Worst" at 10:30). I loved none of them, but found enough interesting ideas, and enough overlap between several of them, to consider some kind of combined review. I could, for instance, have doubled up "Rush" and "Satisfaction" and mused for a bit about the state of the USA brand as it moves further away from the "blue skies" formula of "Burn Notice" and other shows, and how "Rush" feels like an attempt to do a darker version of one of those blue skies shows (it's "Royal Pains" meets "Ray Donovan"), while "Satisfaction" is a wild swing in a completely different direction. Or I could have written about the very different approaches that "Satisfaction" and "Married" take to the idea of marriages curdling from over-familiarity and a lack of sex.

It is a dish best served cold, so they say. It is also, at least as far as cinema is concerned, less straight-forward than you might think. Someone might be on a mission and it might seem to be revenge-like, but if it turns into a rescue, does that disqualify it?
What if there is a revenge element to an otherwise-themed film? Take Taken, if you will. He wants his daughter back and is prepared to use a particular set of skills to do so, but he clearly wants some measure of revenge on the kidnappers as well. What are we to do? We could debate such questions endlessly.
With this week’s release of In The Blood , Haywire’s Gina Carano is going to have at those she holds responsible for her husband’s disappearance. So, instead of nit-picking, let’s visit some of the best revenge missions that...

Gary Numan - Electric Friend (Tom Eames, Entertainment Reporter)
A film about the godfather of electro pop and industrial paranoia is crying out to be made, and maybe a TV film would be the best platform. Electric Friend would chart the story of a shy, socially awkward youth who would often get into trouble at school, turning to the...

Our TV week is bookended by sitcom goodbyes. It began with the series finale of How I Met Your Mother; it concludes with the capper to Raising Hope, tapping out tonight with back-to-back episodes, including one cheekily entitled “How I Met Your Mullet.” Created by Greg Garcia, who also gave us My Name Is Earl, the four-season-running Raising Hope was a sweet-and-salty sitcom about the daffy-dumb Chance clan — Virginia, the responsible materfamilias (Martha Plimpton); Burt, the air-headed dad (Garret Dillahunt); Jimmy, the teen-son-turned-teen-father (Lucas Neff); and Maw-Maw, the cracked and coarse grandma (Cloris Leachman) — collectively raising the titular babe, and was always a big-hearted,...

He escaped and made it home, only to discover he’d have to find a way to survive this plague alone. Little did he know his father, his only parent, was among the infected. Slow-moving and non-thinking, the “lamebrains” swarmed his apartment complex, hunting survivors to feed their insatiable hunger for living flesh. Now he must apply his Porcupine...
