Whether a result of suicide, drunken stupidity, or sheer dumb luck, train drivers the world over kill people. You’d like to believe it’s a rarity, but the truth is most likely the opposite. What then is life like for those who’ve chosen this profession? They’re constantly on alert, blaring their horns and hitting the brakes in the hopes they can stop in time. But even the best have blood on their hands. Even the most cautious must deal with the nightmares of accidents out of their control. The weight of this reality isn’t to be dismissed. And as Milos Radovic’s Train Driver’s Diary shows, it can drive people towards insanity. A sense of humor is therefore crucial. They could voluntarily become the next fatality without one.

In Zrinko Ogresta's "On the Other Side," Vesna (Ksenija Marinković), a middle-aged nurse in Zagreb, Croatia, finds her tranquil life interrupted when her husband, Žarko (Lazar Ristovski), reappears following a prison sentence for crimes committed in wartime during the early 1990s. Indeed, this enigmatic trailer raises more questions about the characters'—and the region's—past than it answers. "Why," Vesna asks at one point, "are you doing this to me?" Read More: "Berlin's Panorama Section to Feature Chantal Akerman, Rebecca Miller, More" Using history as a lens through which to view the present is nothing new to Ogresta, who also works as a professor of film directing at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb—he received a European Film Award nomination in 1991 for Best Young Director for his first feature, "Fragments: Chronicle of a Vanishing," about a family torn apart by World War II and the Communist...

Sweet, Silly November: Donaldson’s Espionage Thriller is Overbaked
Starting out with a standard template of flourishes one can find in any number of garden variety spy thrillers, Roger Donaldson’s The November Man gets a lot of credit for being unexpectedly agile and energetic, generating mild tension as appropriate and even utilizing cast members more effectively than most B grade members of its species. But like a semi-talented juggler that takes on one ball too many, Donaldson’s film of furiously committed and concurrent clusters end up smashing into each other to concoct a rather silly and sallow end product. What’s unfortunate is that there are a couple likeable elements to the feature that make it entertaining to sit through, and one only has to compare this to Donaldson’s last film, the wretched Nicolas Cage headlined Seeking Justice, to be thankful for at least that.
