- Canadian-Jewish novelist and essayist, the son of a scrap yard dealer. Worked briefly at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in 1952, before moving to London in 1954, where he published seven of his ten novels. He also worked as a journalist. Most of his novels deal with the conflict between Jew and Gentile.
- He was awarded the C.C. (Companion of the Order of Canada) on December 15, 2000 for his services to Canadian Literature.
