If curating the Best Action Movies of All Time felt borderline impossible, then ranking just the top entries from this century is Mission Barely Manageable.
Most franchise IP blockbusters released to big box office hauls in recent years could qualify as “action movies” in one way or another. That’s particularly true when it comes to the omnipresent cultural phenomenon we call superhero films. It can be tempting to write off the entire action genre when all you see is the over-pixelated epics about super-somethings stopping intergalactic injustice that make up an increasingly large chunk of modern Hollywood. However, the action movies that depend less on fetishized source material have yielded some of the most personal higher-budget workaround. When done well, action movies can tell great character-driven stories through movement. Action — acted or animated — is simply drama made dynamic.
That principle is what separates so many of the movies on...

In the 30+ years since Cliffhanger arrived, a lot has changed, including star Sylvester Stallone now being in his 70s and the action genre transforming significantly. But Cliffhanger director Renny Harlin has another worry entirely for the upcoming sequel: technology, expressing concern that it may rely too much on CGI.
Speaking with ComingSoon.net, Harlin said that while he isn’t attached to Cliffhanger 2, he is still holding out hope for the production’s success, further saying he isn’t confident that the studio will maintain the “real” quality of the 1993 original. “Now, of course, it’s a long time later, so I have no idea what kind of a story they are planning to tell or what Sly’s role in it is. But I wish them the best of luck. I hope they don’t try to replace what we did with a lot of CG. Because I...

Director Renny Harlin on why the original plans for Cliffhanger 2 never happened, as the sequel finally moves forward.
The original Cliffanger was directed by Renny Harlin and released in 1993. Starring Sylvester Stallone, the film is fondly remembered as a classic of 90s action cinema, not least for its memorable set pieces which, being of early 90s vintage, were largely practical in execution.
Although Stallone is of course returning for the long-belated sequel, Harlin isn’t involved in the follow-up, which will be helmed by Plane director Jean-Francois Richet. Cliffhanger sparked a career revival for Stallone, but Harlin worries that a key facet of the film’s production won’t stay true to that early 90s style of production.
“I hope they don’t try to replace what we did with a lot of CG. Because I think the audience will be able to tell that we did everything for real,...

Sylvester Stallone will return to the top of the mountain in 2024 for Cliffhanger 2. More on the sequel here:
Earlier this year, before the Hollywood strikes sent the world of film production into a chaotic tailspin, we heard that Sylvester Stallone would be making a follow-up to his 1993 hit, Cliffhanger.
The film still ranks as one of Stallone’s best action movies and is remembered fondly. Greenland’s Ric Roman Waugh signed on to direct, the talk was of a Top Gun: Maverick-style legacy sequel – and it all sounded pretty interesting.
Fast forward to a post-strike world, and the project is thankfully still alive – although a few changes have taken place.
Waugh is no longer on the project and has, as reported by Screen Daily, been replaced by Plane director, Jean-Francois Richet. The project is truly international given that it’s a British/German co-production with an American movie star headlining,...

Sylvester Stallone’s Gabe Walker is again taking to the mountains in Cliffhanger 2. A few months ago, it was announced that Greenland director Ric Roman Waugh was set to direct the Stallone sequel, but now that the movie is set to go into production in the summer of 2024, it will have a new director. Jean-Francois Richet, who made the two-part crime classic Mesrine starring Vincent Cassel, will now be at the helm of the sequel, which Screen Daily reveals finds Stallone’s character running a mountain lodge in the Dolomites, where he and a client are taken hostage. The sequel is set to center around Gabe’s daughter, who uses the climbing skills she learned from her father to save the day. Of course, this isn’t the first time a Cliffhanger sequel has been plotted. A few years back, director Ana Lily Amirpour was set to direct a...

This Hijack review contains no spoilers.
Who remembers the last time we got a gripping airplane thriller with an intense script and a charismatic lead actor? Well, hopefully, many of you since Jean-Francois Richet’s B flick, Plane, starring Gerard Butler, has only come out at the beginning of the year, and it was a surprisingly enjoyable ride. Apple TV+’s latest 7-part miniseries, Hijack, aims to ride a similar, if more high-level, wave, and for the most part, it does it with utter confidence thanks to its sharp writing and a surly Idris Elba as its lead.
The hook for Hijack to attract viewers is a plot that unfolds in real-time (each episode covering about an hour of a 7-hour flight from Dubai to London) featuring an accomplished, mostly British cast, including regulars like Neil Maskell, Max Beesley, and Ben Miles. Of course, the main appeal of George Kay...

Gerard Butler was destined for stardom around the time he was the lead in 300 but the fates have not been kind, so he continues to get work, reminding us of his skills. Unfortunately, the quality of the vehicles he appears in varies wildly and thankfully the most recent, Plane, is better than most.
A large part of the credit goes to the always-likable Mike Colter, regardless of the part he plays. Here, he’s a fugitive from justice, being extradited by Butler when their airplane crashes. In a hostile Pacific environment, they are on the run, chased by Datu Junmar (Evan Dane Taylor), and the rescue team led by Scarsdale (Tony Goldwyn), former Special Ops, who knows a thing or two.
Were it just the two of them, the black and white men on the run and opposite sides of the law would loudly echo The Defiant Ones, but with other passengers in the mix,...

The Plane cinematic universe isn’t coming in for a landing any time soon, with Mike Colter set to reprise his role as former French Legionnaire Louis Gaspare in the just-announced sequel, Ship.
The Jean-François Richet-directed Plane starred Gerard Butler as commercial pilot Brodie Torrance, who makes an emergency landing in the Phillippines and must depend on one of his passengers, the suspected murderer Gaspare, to survive. In the sequel, as The Hollywood Reporter notes, Gaspare will attempt to escape the Philippines aboard a cargo ship, only to discover that his chosen vessel is being used for human trafficking. Violent justice follows.
“It’s funny, because part of me is always like, ‘Hey, keep changing it up. Find something different. Don’t do the same thing twice,’” Colter said in an interview with Consequence last month before the sequel had been announced. “But then [Plane] is the first time where I went,...

After “Plane” took off at theaters this January, a followup film is already hitting the high seas. “Ship,” a sequel to the Gerard Butler thriller, is set to begin production later this year, Variety reports.
As the title suggests, “Ship” will be set on a boat, and focuses on Mike Colter’s character from the original “Plane,” fugitive and homicide suspect Louis Gaspare. It’s unclear if Butler, who led “Plane” as commercial pilot Brodie Torrance, will return to the project, either in a supporting role or a cameo appearance, but original director Jean-François Richet will be back as an executive producer.

Gerard Butler has carved out a nice little corner of the action market for himself. The only franchise he’s actively tied to is the “Fallen” series, however the actor continues to churn out films for the lost art of the self-contained, mid-budget action romps that still get some theater releases. His latest effort, the aptly titled Plane, has entertained audiences once they got past the laughably generic title. According to Deadline, there is now a sequel being planned for Plane, titled Ship.
Plane director, Jean-François Richet, is set to return for the sequel. It is reported that the story this time around will center on Mike Colter’s character, with Gerard Butler possibly only appearing in a cameo. In Plane, Mike Colter played a former French Legionnaire named Louis Gaspare. He was a prisoner accused of murder who was taken to transport on the fateful commercial flight with Gerard Butler’s pilot character.

Ladies and gentlemen, we've got a new franchise as this year's action flick "Plane" is getting a sequel, and it's going to move the action from the air to the sea. Granted, most of the first movie took place on an island inhabited by terrorists, but that's not the point. The follow-up will be titled "Ship" meaning yes, it will be taking place on a big ship and will, once again, put Mike Colter in an unenviable situation. Cinema, it would seem, is alive and very well.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Colter, of "Luke Cage" fame, has officially boarded the sequel and will reprise his role as Louis Gaspare. Unfortunately, it looks like Gerard Butler won't be teaming up with him this time around, as his character Brodie Torrance is a pilot and not a man of the sea. A sequel to “Plane” is officially taking flight — or rather, setting sail.
Mike Colter, who played accused murderer Louis Gaspare in the original film, will headline the new, nautical movie, which is aptly titled “Ship.” Producers MadRiver Pictures, Di Bonaventura Pictures and G-base Productions are returning for the sequel, with director Jean-François Richet also back as an executive producer.
The follow-up will focus on Colter’s character, who escaped extradition to Toronto when Trailblazer Flight 119 went down in the Philippines, and formed an unlikely partnership with Gerard Butler’s Captain Brodie Torrance to rescue the plane’s passengers and crew from pirates.
“Ship” will pick up where Gaspare’s storyline left off in “Plane” — with the legionnaire disappearing into the jungles of Jolo Island. It’s not yet clear whether Butler will return for the next film.

Mike Colter has jumped on board Ship, the sequel to the original Lionsgate thriller The Plane.
The followup, set on a cargo ship, will focus on Colter’s character from Plane, accused murderer and former French Legionnaire Louis Gaspare. The sequel will see Gaspare hop aboard a cargo ship in East Asia to escape the Philippines, only to discover the vessel is being used as a ferry for a human trafficking ring. That has Gaspare joining with the second mate/navigator to take down the ship’s corrupt captain, keep its innocent passengers safe and liberate its captives.

Gerard Butler, the man that lives his film life (lately above all) this time around saves some passengers from the dangers in the jungle and their hostile inhabitants
About the Movie
This man who seems to be wearing blockbuster on his t-shirt, knows what he is doing and, although he tried his luck (with Katherine Heigl in The Ugly Truth) in romance, seems to fare better in living in danger and saving lives with his rough yet effective style.
Plane (2023)
Butler is not the kind of guy to be delivering kicks, his style is more about adapting to a situation and thanks to his kindness and his luck, saving the world like that because he can.

Plane isn’t stupid enough. The title of this Gerard Butler action thriller, which should only be said with the monosyllabic matter-of-factness of a toddler at an airport, is so boneheaded that it craves chaotic genius in return. But Plane is stifled by just how ordinary it is, and how closely it hews to the standard tropes of action films with longer, more descriptive – yet less ridiculous – titles.
Here, Butler is parachuted into the exact kind of cheap, vaguely racist action flick that dominated the Eighties and Nineties. He plays Brodie Torrance, a commercial pilot heading up a New Year’s Eve flight from Singapore to Tokyo. It’s a budget airline. There are only 14 passengers onboard – plus, of course, a convicted criminal named Louis Gaspare (Mike Colter), who’s being transferred between prisons. The plane is caught up in a violent storm that Brodie is ordered to fly through.

The year 2023 boasts interesting, highly-anticipated movies, from action flicks to historical dramas. One of the newest films to hit theaters is Plane, starring Gerard Butler as a strong-willed commercial pilot. With the actor’s history of playing the tough, determined “everyman,” fans have been lining up to see his latest project. Interestingly, Plane is a movie that has been a few years in the making. With a release date that has changed at least once, many fans are curious about the process of getting the flick to the big screen and which stars are featured in the film.

Plane isn’t just another action thriller. The movie –- which stars Gerard Butler and Mike Colter –- centers on an emergency landing that leaves a pilot (Butler) and his passengers stranded on an island and on a mission of survival. But in a recent interview, Colter confirmed he believes his fandom of a certain controversial TV series is the key that would help him survive a deserted island.

Pilot Brodie Torrance saves passengers from a lightning strike by making a risky landing on a war-torn island — only to find that surviving the landing was just the beginning. When dangerous rebels take most of the passengers hostage, the only person Torrance can count on for help is Louis Gaspare, an accused murderer who was being transported by the FBI.
With the release of M3gan, Sick, The Old Way, and now Plane, it seems that we may be finally leaving behind the “January movie,” if you know what I mean. It’s notorious that Hollywood usually tends to dump the worst movies possible in the month of January to essentially bury them. This piece contains massive spoilers for "Plane."
With a title as unique and original as "Plane," did you really expect something entirely cookie-cutter out of this new film? While definitely populated with standard action tropes, there were a few off-the-wall moments that were worth the price of admission. Perhaps the craziest and most unexpected of these moments came near the film's conclusion, where Pilot Brodie Torrance (Gerard Butler) decides to end the reign of terror caused by militia commander Dele (Yoson An) once and for all.
How exactly does he do this? Well, it's simple: Brodie commandeers a plane right into Dele on a runway. Literally. He pulverizes this man with a whole-ass airplane. I mean, were you expecting anything less?
As it turns out, that show-stopping conclusion came straight from Butler, and he's pretty damn proud of it. He made the revelation in an interview with Uproxx, with the...

Nowadays it’s rare to see a multiplex movie with so little affect. And arriving in the second week of January as one of the few dumping-ground action programmers we thankfully still get, the bluntly titled Plane can be––and this is not a backhanded compliment necessarily––described as a VOD action movie that somehow escaped to theaters. Directed by French action craftsman Jean-François Richet, the kind of cineaste who probably grew up on Charles Bronson movies exported to Europe as opposed to Jean-Luc Godard at the cinematheque, the film can bring to mind both Clint Eastwood and even the late John Flynn in its formal simplicity.
Though the film’s chief attraction will be its star Gerard Butler, who seems to almost be veering into Keanu Reeves / Nicolas Cage “begrudging respect” territory just by keeping at it in these unpretentious action flicks. The actor, who permanently looks like he...

January movies suck. Right? At least that’s always been the conventional wisdom. Just as movies released in the second half of August and early September are considered to be weak stragglers and cast-offs after the summer rush, the post-holiday haze of the very beginning of a New Year is supposed to be the same kind of repository for the trash that isn’t awards-worthy or good enough to spend a lot of marketing dollars on. After all, the kids are back in school, no one has money, so who cares?
The truth of the matter, however, is that over the years January has gradually shed its stigma of being a cinematic burial site. Now that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of garbage shoved onto multiplex screens during the first month of the year—far from it. But as two recent examples show, January can be just as...

You can imagine the committee meetings devoted to finding just the right title for primo action star Gerard Butler’s latest, in which he plays an airline pilot encountering lightning strikes that force him to crash-land on a rebel-infested remote island in the Philippines. As it criss-crosses the airline disaster genre and frightening jungle thriller, why not just tell the public what it really is. While it could be called Terror Island, or maybe Pirates Jungle, or Flight to the Death, the producers came up with the inspired plain Plane. That works well enough for anyone expecting Airport meets The High and the Mighty, but really it is just the first half that fits snugly into that category, nail-biting as it is.

If you've gone to the movies over the past few months, you've likely seen a trailer for the new action-thriller "Plane." It inadvertently became a joke not because of anything in the preview per se, but because of its simplistic title revelation. But you know what? Having seen it, not only does the movie live up to its namesake, but it's a surprisingly fun throwback that makes great use of Gerard Butler ("Greenland") and Mike Colter ("Luke Cage").
When a flight to Tokyo in the film is forced to make an emergency landing on a remote island in the Philippines after lightning knocks out the control panels, it leaves Captain Brodie Torrance (Butler) and his flight crew to keep the shaken passengers calm until they can figure out a rescue plan. There's just one problem. Their impromptu runway is on Jolo, a remote island in the Philippines that just so...

January is rarely a time for blockbuster cinema. In the rare case that it is, we're dealing with a holdover from December released the previous year. Or, it's something so bad that the studio has little faith in that they decide to dump it early in the year rather than give it a confident, summer release. So, it's easy to look at "Plane," a new mid-budget action/thriller starring Gerard Butler and dismiss it as typical January schlock. It brings me enormous joy to tell you that is not at all the case, as this is a '90s throwback that comes as a breath of fresh air, even if it's not the most original air you've ever tasted.
The film centers on a family man pilot named Brodie Torrance (Butler), who is very Scottish and very devoted to his job. After being forced to fly through a storm, things...

Plot: When a plane is forced to make an emergency landing on a island run by heavily armed insurgents, the heroic captain (Gerard Butler) must rely on an unlikely ally to save the passengers – a convicted murder (Mike Colter) who was being transported on the flight.
Review: January used to be regarded as dump month – a time when studios could burn off all of their less than cherished product. But, in an era of event films and tentpoles, the attitude has changed. While the month used to be a dead zone in terms of quality, it’s also become a fertile zone for studios to release genre films, with horror and lower-budgeted action films often turning solid profits given that they are faced with little competition for those multiplex bucks. Take, for example, M3GAN’s massive opening last weekend. As such, Lionsgate has decided to release their latest Gerard Butler action flick,...

, Jean-François Richet’s “Plane” becomes the most airworthy Gerard Butler vehicle this side of “Greenland” by answering a question that Clint Eastwood didn’t even have the courage to ask: What if, instead of ditching US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River like a total loser, Capt. Sully Sullenberger had been man enough to land that baby in the middle of a steroidal ’80s action movie? You know the kind! The sort where vaguely racist man-vs.-army spectacle that finds a couple of jacked-up English-speaking everymen forced to kill their way out of a sweltering foreign jungle full of indigenous militants, and climaxes with the bad guys loading the shoulder-mounted rocket-launchers that Southeast Asian henchmen always keep on hand in case Sylvester Stallone ever decides to reboot “Rambo” again.

Ever since the ’80s, action films have been overwhelmingly basic in concept, execution, and title. So when you hear that the new Gerard Butler film is called “Plane,” you’d be forgiven for thinking that you can run the entire movie through your head in the blink of an eye. Gerard Butler on a plane (check). He’s probably the pilot (check). There’s probably a criminal onboard (check). The film will be a low-flying, B-grade “Air Force One,” with Butler’s windpipe-smashing grizzled lug saving the day in the same way that Harrison Ford’s heroically resourceful chief executive did.
Actually, no.
Butler, in his broken-down-dad-with-a-chip-of-gold-on-his-shoulder mode, does indeed play a commercial airline pilot, Captain Brodie Torrance, who in the early scenes boards a passenger jet that he’s piloting on New Year’s Eve from Singapore (where he’s based) to Tokyo. Everyone has bad work days. Sometimes there’s just too much to do and not enough time to do it all; sometimes your coworkers can drive you up a wall; sometimes you have to land a commercial airliner somewhere in the Philippines because a lightning strike has rendered your plane flightless.
That last example is the plight of Trailblazer Airlines pilot Brodie Torrance, Gerard Butler’s character in the new action-thriller “Plane,” directed by Jean-François Richet (“The Emperor of Paris”). When his flight 199 goes down over the Sulu Sea, the grizzled captain teams up with an unlikely ally — the extradited murderer sitting at the back of his plane — to help his passengers and crew navigate a treacherous island. What follows is a ho-hum fight for survival peppered with carnage and, occasionally, pathos.

It’s a wonder that Gerard Butler is able to purchase any insurance. After all, bad things seem to happen to him, or at least his screen persona, all the time. Whether he’s playing a Secret Service agent or an Everyman, Butler can’t seem to avoid getting in more tight spots than anyone since Bruce Willis’ John McClane. In his newest film, Plane, Butler plays an airline pilot, so you can rest assured that his flight is not going to go smoothly.
Fortunately for moviegoers, the veteran Scottish actor is an engaging, charismatic presence, and Plane is the sort of breathlessly paced suspenser that barely leaves a moment for audiences to stop suspending their disbelief.
The film dispenses with backstory, save for a brief introductory phone conversation between pilot Brodie Torrance (Butler) and his teenage daughter (Haleigh Hekking) as he’s rushing through airport security. It’s New Year’s Eve,...

Gerard Butler has been bringing back some seriously cool action flicks as of late. You have Den of Thieves, the thrilling and suspenseful Copshop, and Greenland – an impressive disaster thriller. The man has been busy. And now, he is your pilot in the blast of feature, Plane. The new thriller takes him on highs and lows as a pilot who crashes into a war zone during a tumultuous storm. It’s a fun one. And it also co-stars the very talented star of small screen Luke Cage and the series Evil, Mr. Mike Colter. And it’s a delight seeing these two fine gents face off against baddies in the Jean-François Richet directed tale.

When one of the militias, led by the short-tempered Dele (Yoson An), takes the majority of the crew and passengers hostage, Brodie is...
