Exclusive: Southpaw, the long-gestating Kurt Sutter-scripted drama about a fighter who tries to overcome adversity to recapture glory, is finally getting close to the start line. I’m hearing that The Weinstein Company and director Antoine Fuqua have made Rachel McAdams their choice to play the female lead alongside Jake Gyllenhaal, with Forest Whitaker in talks to play the boxing trainer who tries to guide his fighter back after his world is shattered by personal tragedy. It sends him on a downward spiral and puts his young daughter in a bad spot. I’m hearing TWC is courting 12 Years A Slave Oscar winner Lupita Nyong‘o to play the social worker watching out for the kid. Alan Riche and Peter Riche are producing with Todd Black and Jason Blumenthal. Fuqua has brought his Equalizer scribe Richard Wenk on for a rewrite.

With The Equalizer in the can, set for a late 2014 release, Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Olympus Has Fallen) has been busy looking for his next project. Now, it seems that he has officially settled on a film that has been on his radar for a while – the long-gestating Southpaw, which will star Jake Gyllenhaal.
As the story of a rising welterweight boxing champion who enjoys continued professional success while his personal life disintegrates, Southpaw was originally conceived by Kurt Sutter (creator of Sons Of Anarchy) as a vehicle for Eminem (Marshall Mathers). As Deadline reported in late 2010, DreamWorks co-chairman/CEO Stacey Snider acquired the project after championing 8 Mile as head of Universal Pictures. Sutter explained that it was inspired by the struggles Eminem had endured:
“He shared so much of his personal struggle in this raw and very honest album – one that I connected with on a lot of levels.

The Wrap is reporting that Margot Robbie, the young Australian beauty whose star is rapidly rising, is in talks to take on the role of Jane in David Yates’s upcoming adaptation of Tarzan. Yates, of course, is that man who Warner Bros turned to for the final four Harry Potter films. Now they’re entrusting him with the latest retelling of Edgar Rice Burroughs’s story, and subsequent series of novels, about a boy raised in the wild who one day becomes “King of The Jungle.”
Robbie, fresh off of a star-making turn in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street, is said to be closing in on a deal to play the titular character’s love interest, Jane. Past live-action incarnations of Jane have been played Maureen O’Sullivan, Bo Derek, and Andie McDowell. The role of Tarzan will be played by True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgård.

The imprint already has a runaway hit with He's Just Not That Into You: The No-Excuses Truth to Understanding Guys, by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo, which already has 1.2 million copies in print. Hookup is SSE's first book to be optioned.

The Lord of the Rings star Sean Astin is in final negotiations and Blade's Steven Dorff is set to topline the indie feature The Mule. Production begins in June on location in London and Amsterdam. Geoffrey Wright (Romper Stomper) is directing. The project is based on the true story of two Hollywood stuntmen (Astin and Dorff) who began making supply runs of the drug Ecstasy between Amsterdam and Los Angeles during the actors strike in the '90s. Clayton Barber and Jack Singman wrote the script to the project, which is being produced by Tony Ludwig and Alan Riche. Dorff also is producing the film, the actor's first foray into producing. The film's $17 million budget is being financed out of Germany. Astin, repped by Writers & Artists, manager Joel Stevens and attorney David Feldman, will segue into Mule after he wraps shooting Columbia Pictures' 50 First Kisses, starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore (HR 3/17). He next stars in the third installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Return of the King. Dorff, repped by UTA, next stars in the Walt Disney Co. feature Cold Creek Manor.

John Schultz, who directed this summer's basketball comedy Like Mike, has come aboard to direct Paramount Pictures/Nickelodeon Films' Where's Waldo. A late-summer 2003 start date is being planned. The project, based on Martin Handford's illustrated children's book series of the same name, is about a lanky, bespectacled boy in a red-and-white striped hat who travels through various scenes throughout the world and throughout time. The feature film version, adapted for the screen by Adam Rifkin, is described as Back to the Future meets Inspector Gadget. It centers on Waldo, now 30 years old, who is a janitor/inventor who ends up traveling through time after accidentally activating a malfunctioning travel machine. There is also a love story component to the project. Tony Ludwig and Alan Riche are producing Waldo. Schultz and Rifkin are both repped by CAA. Schultz, additionally repped by attorney Jason Sloane, directed Drive Me Crazy and Bandwagon, which he also wrote and produced.

When it came time to give "The Mod Squad" the big-screen treatment, there were a few options.
The movie version could be (a) set in the late 1960s counterculture like the TV series; (b) contemporized with a late 1990s spin; or (c) given the satirical "Austin Powers" fish-out-of-water treatment with, everybody's favorite hippie cops suddenly finding themselves having to cope on the cusp of a new millennium.
As it turned out, the filmmakers went with (b), as in boring, turning out a dull, stone-faced, listless approximation of the original minus the Nehru collars, the afros, the groovy music and the other happening touches that gave the otherwise generic crime series its pop flavor.
Stripped of its spirit and weighted down with countless scenes of mind-numbing introspection, this "Mod Squad" will likely have to amend its old "no badges, no guns" credo with the words "no audience."
Taking over where Michael Cole, Clarence Williams III and Peggy Lipton left off, Giovanni Ribisi, Omar Epps and Claire Danes are Pete, Linc and Julie, respectively, a trio of juvies on probation who are recruited by fatherly Capt. Adam Greer (Dennis Farina) to infiltrate the seedy Southern California drug and crime scene.
Pete, as before, is the troubled rich kid who was booted out of his Beverly Hills home and subsequently nabbed for breaking and entering. Linc, now from the 'hood (formerly the ghetto), has been charged with arson; while reformed drug addict Julie (once the runaway daughter of a San Francisco hooker) was brought in for assault.
Their assignment is to work undercover in the kind of establishments where the scourge of society preys on the impressionable young. But when a cache of drugs goes AWOL from the police lock-up and Capt. Greer turns up dead, the kids suddenly have to fend for themselves.
The picture's corrupt cop plot line (credited writers include director Scott Silver & Stephen Kay and Kate Lanier) is so tired and uninspired that even the characters comment on it. Both script and direction cry out for a hefty shot of adrenalin.
And while Danes, Ribisi and Epps are all proven, capable actors, here they're all hopelessly unconvincing as streetwise delinquents. They might as well be doing a production of "The Mod Squad: The School Play".
Certainly their written characters, as such, aren't much help. Although Ribisi's Pete has been outfitted with a short fuse that provides a little comic relief, both Danes' Julie and particularly Epps' Linc have been given precious little in the way of defining personalities.
The supporting players, including Farina, Josh Brolin as a potential flame from Julie's past and Richard Jenkins as an adversarial detective, find themselves in the same, uncharted boat. Only Michael Lerner gets to have a little fun as an oddball, drug-dealing music talent manager.:
At least "The Mod Squad" gets the desired visual tone right thanks to Ellen Kuras' ("Swoon") edgy camerawork; while the audio end is given a jittery alterno-techno-hip hop hybrid courtesy of composer BC Smith and an eclectic song mix that includes contributions from Busta Rhymes, Bjork, Curtis Mayfield and the Crash Test Dummies.
