In the 1950s, he and his wife, Brenda Bruce, had a talk show called "Rich & Rich".
The son of a music hall comedian, he was educated at Dulwich College in London, and appeared as a child actor on stage in 1923. He later became a noted BBC radio broadcaster and head of BBC Light Entertainments from 1964 to 1967.
