Disney Channel’s popular animated series The Proud Family is making a comeback. Jo Marie Payton, who voiced Suga Mama in the series which aired for three seasons from 2001-2005, confirmed today on GMA3 that a revival is in the works at upcoming streaming service Disney+.
It came in an answer to a question from host Keke Palmer about Payton’s Suga Mama character. “Yeah, Suga’s large and in charge. That’s all I’ve got to say — except for Suga Mama will be doing some new episodes come February,” revealed Payton.
Word of a revival first surfaced in August when Tommy Davidson, who voiced Oscar Proud, told @WhereIsTheBuzzTV that the series would be revived on Disney+. Payton’s confirmation was the first announcement on a Disney-owned network. GMA3, the third hour of Good Morning America, co-hosted by Michael Strahan, Sara Haines and Palmer, is on Disney-owned ABC.

It sounds like the McGuires aren’t the only beloved Disney Channel family reuniting on Disney+ next year. Penny, Suga Mama and the rest of The Proud Family, which originally aired for three seasons (2001–2005), are also planning an epic homecoming.
The confirmation came during Tuesday’s episode of GMA3, which featured a reunion of ’90s sitcom parents. Jo Marie Payton (aka Family Matters‘ Harriette Winslow) was asked by host Keke Palmer if she’s anything like Suga Mama, the character she voiced on the popular animated Disney Channel series.

During the mid-’90s — specifically 1994 — we were still basking in grunge, films like Reality Bites and shows like My So-Called Life were defining a generation while chokers, baby doll dresses, crop tops and “The Rachel” hairstyle were all the rage. Then, on April 16, 1994, Nickelodeon debuted the comedy sketch show called All That and it sparked a very specific golden age of TV for young adults. The series starred Angelique Bates, Lori Beth Denberg, Katrina Johnson, Alisa Reyes, Josh Server, Kenan Thompson and, this week’s guest on the New Hollywood Podcast Kel Mitchell. 25 years later the show is a benchmark in pop culture and Mitchell is executive producing (and appearing in) a reboot of All That which not only introduces the good-natured, silly sketch show to a new generation but also sparks nostalgia for those who remember laughing a Coach Kreeton for the first time.

The groundbreaking kids sketch comedy show is returning to Nickelodeon. We have details on the All That revival...
The execs at Nickelodeon have been all about embracing the network’s animated past. A new Hey Arnold film, upcoming features for Rocko’s Modern Life and Invader Zim, and a planned Rugrats revival are in the pipeline. The network also tapped into its rich game show IP, successfully introducing Double Dare to a new generation and reimagining Legends of the Hidden Temple as a TV movie. The network’s strategy of using its ‘90s and ‘00s hits to connect generations proves a little harder when looking at its hit live-action shows; shows like Clarissa Explains It All, Sneaky Pete, Kenan and Kel, and The Amanda Show were all character driven by the child stars of the moment. All That, with its sketch show format, is the outlier, and...

They seemed ageless as camp counselors, Goodburger employees and dude ranch handlers, but even '90s Nickelodeon stars couldn't stay teenagers forever. One went on to marry Ben Stiller) while others quit acting altogether. But 30-year-olds around the world can rejoice, because Amanda Bynes, 27, has yet to join the club.
