[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 4 “Face the Strange.”] The crew’s latest encounter with Moll (Eve Harlow) and L’ak (Elias Toufexis) sends two of its members on quite the timey wimey trip—including to Star Trek: Discovery‘s past and (hopefully not) future. Their foes planted a time bug on Adira’s (Blu Del Barrio) sleeve in the previous episode, and as a result, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her Number One, Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie), go jumping through time. At one point, Burnham even encounters herself—the Season 1 version, fresh off being a mutineer and not trusted by any of the crew (including Airiam!). Revisiting the past version of her character and fighting her as the present-day one “was one of my favorite moments,” Martin-Green raves to TV Insider. “We had such an amazing time shooting it, and I loved being able to see the contrast between...

This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Star Trek: Discovery."
For many Trekkies, "Star Trek: Discovery" has always felt a little like the younger brother clinging onto the franchise's back. The sky-high stakes that always seem to threaten the universe, the heavily serialized nature from episode to episode, and even the way these heart-on-their-sleeve characters carry themselves throughout their duties has all but screamed the fact that this show was meant for younger, more modern audiences.
So imagine our surprise when episode 4 of this final season suddenly dipped into its bag of tricks to unleash not one, but two classic examples of TV tropes that hearken back to the days of "The Original Series." The "time bug" kicks everything off, catching Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) in the most quintessential of Trekkian problems: a time loop. Although not unfamiliar territory for our...

“Star Trek: Discovery,” the flagship series of Paramount+’s “Star Trek” universe, is heading toward its ending. The series, which premiered in 2017, will premiere its fifth and final season on April 4, closing the book on the adventures of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her crew.
A new season also means new challenges for any Starfleet captain, and IndieWire can exclusively share a new clip from the premiere episode that promises a big one for Burnham. On a recovery mission to secure a mysterious ship, Burnham receives information from her crew about signs of life on board. But as her supervisor Kovich coldly reminds her, her mission requires her to neutralize the potential threat “by any means necessary.”
Created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman, “Discovery” was a prequel to the groundbreaking original 1966 “Star Trek” series, taking place a decade before the adventures of Captain Kirk, Spock, and the other...

When producer Alex Kurtzman launched Star Trek: Discovery nearly a decade ago, the idea of bringing the Star Trek franchise back to TV was a gamble. Back in 2015, the most popular science fiction TV series were either on the SyFy Channel or Doctor Who. After having gone out with a whimper with Enterprise in 2005, could Trek rematerialize as a fully rejuvenated version of itself? Could a mainstream audience be enticed back to the final frontier by yet another new crew? At first, the answer was maybe.
After several delays, Star Trek: Discovery debuted in 2017 on a newly minted streaming service, CBS All-Access, and the reviews were mixed. After the departure of Bryan Fuller, some critics felt Disco’s first season had a patchwork quality, amounting to a Trek tapestry that was as challenging as it was audacious. To say Discovery’s early years were some of the riskiest in Trek...

A new face has joined the ensemble for the final season of "Star Trek: Discovery," along with a seemingly familiar set of pointy ears. A character named Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) is poised to board "Star Trek: Discovery" for the show's last voyage on Paramount+, and at first blush, this new player appears to be a Vulcan or similar alien species. A TrekMovie interview with series co-showrunner Michelle Paradise, however, has revealed that Rayner isn't Vulcan or Romulan after all: he's actually part of a lesser-known "Star Trek" species called the Kelleruns.
"He's a Kellerun," Paradise told the outlet after also reportedly confirming the character's background to SFX Magazine. "We were looking for a species that not a lot had been done with them. We definitely wanted another non-human on the ship and taking care of things." Currently, Doug Jones' Kelpien executive officer Saru is the most obviously alien member of the Discovery crew,...

In 2017, the venerable “Star Trek” science fiction franchise had gone a full twelve years without a new series, after Upn aired the series finale of “Enterprise” in 2005. That changed when Paramount released “Star Trek: Discovery” on their CBS All Access (since rebranded to Paramount+) streamer, kicking off a new era for the IP.
Now, seven years later, the series is set to take its own bow. The fifth and last season of “Discovery” is set to premiere this April, and Paramount+ has released a new trailer for the series’ swan song.
Initially set a decade before the events of the iconic 1966 “Original Series,” “Star Trek: Discovery” focused on Michael Burnham a crew member on the Federation ship USS Discovery. Initially a science specialist under the command of Captains Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs) and Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), she fully takes charge as the leader of the ship at the end...

There may still be months until we see the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery (in 2024), but as part of Paramount+‘s presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, a sneak peek featuring Sonequa Martin-Green and three new cast members was released. In the clip, Captain Michael Burnham (Martin-Green) is in pursuit of Moll (Eve Harlow) and L’ak (Elias Toufexis) when a surprise leads to her hanging onto their starship while it travels at warp speed. There’s “never a dull moment,” Michael says, assuring Saru (Doug Jones), who’s back on Discovery, “I’m not dead yet.” Then another ship comes to her aid, with Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) … but the two don’t exactly see eye-to-eye when it comes to how to handle Moll and L’ak. Watch the sneak peek above for much more, including who’s in sick bay, if Rayner listens to Michael,...

No series or Starfleet mission can last forever, and one show's time has come. According to Variety, "Star Trek: Discovery" will end with the upcoming fifth season. Additionally, the series was supposed to debut later this year but has been pushed to an early 2024 release. Variety's sources indicate that filming is mostly complete on season 5, but additional shooting has yet to take place that pushes the release date back a bit. That makes sense, given the series is ending and there might be some rewrites to wrap things up nicely, but it also hopefully means that "Discovery" fans will get the kind of send-off they want and deserve.
"Star Trek: Discovery" has been a somewhat contentious "Trek" offering, with mixed reviews from fans and critics alike, but the series did introduce us to many of the characters that have since gone on to shine in "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,...

Fans of Star Trek: Discovery were given some exciting information at New York Comic Con.
We got an exciting new trailer, photos, and confirmation that there will be three new cast members.
Callum Keith Rennie will star as Rayner, Elias Toufexis as L'ak, and Eve Harlow as Moll.
Series star Sonequa Martin-Green joined the panel virtually from set in Michael Burnham’s captain’s chair.
Rayner is a gruff, smart Starfleet Captain who holds a clear line between commander and crew – he leads, they follow.
Rayner’s all about the mission, whatever it may be, and he doesn’t do niceties along the way; his feeling is, you get the job done and apologize later.
He has a storied track record of wartime success, but in times of peace he struggles.
Collaboration is not his strong suit. That said, if it serves the greater good he’s willing to learn...

There’s almost an unspoken mandate contained within the premise of “Impulse.” Center a TV show around a young woman who is grappling with her newfound ability to teleport and there’s a certain promise to follow wherever that power will lead her.
What made Season 1 of the YouTube Premium series an effective introduction to the story is that it didn’t burden Henry Coles (Maddie Hasson) with having to shoulder infinite possibilities that came with jumping from place to place. The arrival of her ability coincided with an assault perpetrated by one of her classmates, and dealing with that traumatic aftermath, Henry’s jumps — however unpredictable — usually brought her back to her bedroom, a place of comfort.

This spoiler-free review is based on the first two episodes of Impulse season 2.
Viewers of Impulse on YouTube Premium have figured out by now that the television adaptation of the Stephen Gould Jumper novels is more true to the themes of personal trauma from the first book than it is to the high octane action film from 2008. As a result, the pacing of the first season is quite deliberate, focusing more on what caused Henry Coles, played by Maddie Hasson, to teleport in the first place rather than accelerating through her origin story and having her quickly gain control over her abilities. Although some of that will change in season 2, the first two episodes made available for review indicate that the details about...

During a traumatic event, Henry discovers she has the extraordinary ability to teleport, and her newfound power confirms Henry’s conviction that she really was different from everybody else — but it now makes her the focus of those who want to control her.

"I guess this is not really my idea of a 'home.'" Darkstar Pictures & Uncork'd Entertainment have debuted an official Us trailer for an indie drama titled Mobile Homes, which premiered in Directors' Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival last year (not this year). From writer & director Vladimir de Fontenay, the film will finally be released in Us theaters this November. The story follows a young mother named Ali, played by Imogen Poots, who drifts from one motel to the next with her intoxicated boyfriend, and her 8-year-old son. The makeshift family scrapes by, one hustle at a time, until the discovery of a mobile home community offers a better life. The cast includes Callum Turner, Callum Keith Rennie, with Frank Oulton. This is one of those films that actually looks way better than it sounds, and this trailer is definitely worth a watch. Here's the official Us trailer (+ posters...

YouTube Premium is bringing back Doug Liman's Impulse for another suspenseful season of sci-fi.
YouTube Premium isn't messing around with its sci-fi series, Impulse. Indeed, the show, which premiered back on June 6, 2018, landed a quick renewal for a second season, which was announced less than two months later at that year’s San Diego Comic-Con.
YouTube Premium (formerly YouTube Red) cited 8 million viewers for the Impulse pilot in its Comic-Con 2018 renewal confirmation. Thus, Impulse Season 2, like its predecessor, is coming back with a full 10-episode run. It helped that the first season was very well received, and that the popular Cobra Kai helped the new streaming subscription service carve out a viable niche.
Impulse is directed and produced by Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman. It is adapted the Jumper series of novels from Steven Gould, which also served as the basis for Liman's 2008 film adaptation,...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “Impulse” Season 1, including the ending.]
There’s a moment in the “Impulse” finale that helps bring the show’s entire first season into focus. Not knowing about the strange ability that her daughter has only begun to start to control, Cleo (Missi Pyle) comforts Henry (Maddie Hasson), telling her not to diminish her own experiences or put them in some self-imposed context.
In a way, by the ending of Season 1, that’s the same message that “Impulse” itself has sent to its main character: to not lose sight of what she finds important, just for the conventions of TV. While the collective entanglements of the characters for the show’s other generation was more of a mixed bag, the new YouTube Premium series managed to let its high-school-aged protagonist take her time before crossing paths with an outsider well outside her current hometown.
In our season review, we referenced the ever-present risk for personal sci-fi stories like this,...
