Legendary special makeup effects artist Dick Smith, known as The Godfather of Makeup, remains one of the most influential and vital figures in cinematic history. The Academy Museum is celebrating accordingly with a limited screening series that showcases some of Smith’s greatest achievements in movie makeup magic.
The limited screening series, Dick Smith: The Godfather of Makeup, is especially noteworthy for horror fans, as the lineup is packed with special showings of classic horror that showcase Smith’s contributions to the genre. Even better is that many of these screenings include introductions by prominent SFX artists that include Rick Baker, Craig Reardon and more.
Smith was the first makeup artist to receive an honorary Academy Award for lifetime achievement, in 2011. He was 89 at the time. He also won an Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling for his work on Amadeus in 1985, developed a reputation for skillful aging makeups.

The Cat and the Canary
& The Ghost Breakers
Blu ray
Kino Lorber
1939, 1940 / 72, 83 min.
Starring Bob Hope, Paulette Goddard
Cinematography by Charles B. Lang
Directed by Elliott Nugent, George Marshall
Bob Hope’s brand of comedy may have been extinct by the sixties but it was alive and kicking in the pages of God Save the Mark, Donald E. Westlake’s comic crime novel about a schnook on the run for a murder he didn’t commit. Published in 1967, Westlake’s farce resembles one of Hope’s own movies; the pace is frenetic and the patter is as snappy as the comedian’s in his prime—a golden age exemplified by his one-two punch from 1939 and 1940, The Cat and the Canary and The Ghost Breakers. Those films present Hope in excelsis but in the hands of directors Elliott Nugent and George Marshall they serve as master classes in the tricky art of the scare comedy.

The thing about curses is that when you obsess over them, their omens appear to multiply. Such is the case for Cursed Films, the cult docuseries on the Shudder streaming service in which some of the most famous “curses” associated with popular Hollywood films are re-explored and in some cases recontextualized. The series, which is one of the streaming service’s biggest hits is also coming back for more, with Shudder announcing Cursed Films Season 2 is a go Thursday afternoon.
“Season one of Cursed Films captivated audiences with its thoughtful but unflinching exploration of the often tragic events surrounding some of history’s most notorious productions, becoming an instant hit for us and earning rave reviews from both critics and viewers,” Shudder General Manager Craig Engler said. “Since its debut, the number one question we’ve been asked is: Will there be more, and how soon? Some movies are born bad. Poltergeist, The Omen, The Exorcist; these are iconic horror films with reputations of misfortune and mishap. Either due to a series of grim coincidences that form a pattern or one or two notable tragedies, a handful of films are said to have near-evil legacies. Maybe it really is as Shirley Jackson mused in The Haunting of Hill House? If some spots attach to themselves an atmosphere of goodness, “It might not then be too fanciful to say some houses are born bad.” So why not movies too?
Within horror films, curses are caused by the bite of a werewolf or a boy who willfully passes along a demonic Std, or a shamed elderly woman who utters an incantation over the button she’s torn from someone. Perhaps it is not a leap then that the production behind a movie about Satan’s offspring would likewise...

A CineSavant Article A mention in a book by Tom Weaver of an odd shared visual in two Universal-International movies of the 1950s prompts a quick frame-grab comparison, and also some thoughts about how movies were really made back when twenty dollars was probably considered a big budget expenditure. Some savant I am … I simply didn’t see what was in front of my eyes! A contributor (and friend) had to hold me by the neck to see what a few others have figured out before. Bud and Lou are involved, so who can complain?
Now for some fun, the man said. This one gets filed in the In Box for ‘Odd Mysteries.’ Friend and advisor Craig Reardon has been enduring the world’s forced isolation (cough) by doing what we all do when the going gets tough, watching TV.

If you’re a movie fan, then chances are you’re already familiar with the concept of “cursed films,” which is when a project’s legacy has something of a sinister undertone to it due to extenuating circumstances beyond any sort of normal production woes. And for their new series entitled Cursed Films, Shudder is diving into whether or not films like Poltergeist, The Omen, The Exorcist, The Crow, and Twilight Zone: The Movie were actually doomed from the start, or victims of being dealt an unfortunate hand by fate.
The two episodes this writer had the opportunity to check out were for Tobe Hooper’s Poltergeist as well as Richard Donner’s The Omen, and for the most part, I found them extremely entertaining, although admittedly, neither one was very in-depth as a whole. Horror that skews to a younger audience is a tricky proposition: where is the line between appealing to their budding sensibilities and traumatizing them forever? It’s a fine one for sure, but the ‘80s were built for the young, with the MTV and the glowing clothes and the disaffected suburbanites (just ask Rush); it was a playful decade culturally, and horror plugged directly into that adolescent electricity with The Gate (1987), a hellzapoppin’ tale of friendship, family, metal, and jaw dropping satanic trolls.
Released by New Century Vista Film Company mid-May in North America, the Canadian made film was a surprise hit, bringing in nearly $14 million against a $2.5 million budget. The critics liked it too, especially heaping praise on its very impressive stop motion and forced perspective work, courtesy of Randall William Cook (Fright Night). But technical wizardry aside, The Gate deserves a lot of credit for tapping into childhood...

He’s not joking. A steaming hole has opened up in Glen’s back garden, and while his parents are away for the weekend he’ll have to defend his home from a demonic invasion.
Glen’s main guardian is his older sister, Al (Christa Denton). Together, the siblings and Terry will face ghosts, poltergeists, zombies, moths and hordes of ankle-biting mini trolls. The ancient evil needs two human sacrifices in order to unleash its full power on the world. Any two will do. Can the kids survive the night?...

Everyone needs an escape from time to time. A place apart from reality, where the strange whisper with the miraculous, and cheap trinkets are bartered with greasy denizens of the night. What better place to set a horror film than the carnival, where the potential for mystery awaits around every crimson tent and distorted mirror? If you’re so inclined, step right up and buy a ticket to The Funhouse (1981), the late Tobe Hooper’s wonderful tribute to the seedy shadowed world of carnies, caramel apples, and Universal monsters.
Released in March by Universal, The Funhouse underperformed at the box office, but critics (including Gene Siskel) admired it for focusing on suspense and thrills rather than gruesome mayhem. In a landscape littered with severed limbs and phallically inclined urban legends, Mr. Hooper used his genius to once again showcase the underbelly of the American psyche, this time with a major studio’s dollars.

Following the unprecedented success of his monolithic sophomore feature, 1974’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which would forever immortalize director Tobe Hooper in the annals of great horror filmmakers, he would return to the Southern Fried grindhouse realm with 1976’s Eaten Alive, another ‘based-on-a-true-story’ effort featuring a set of original backwoods kooks. Though the film failed to attain the same attention, Hooper managed to obtain a higher profile cast for a film arguably less off-putting thanks to its more comedic moments.
Opening with a line that would go on to be famously recycled by Quentin Tarantino, ornery redneck Buck (Robert England) assails Clara (Roberta Collins), a reluctant prostitute in a bad blonde wig. Kicked out of the brothel by the no-nonsense owner, Miss Hattie (Carolyn Jones), Clara stumbles through the swampy Louisiana bayou and comes upon a dilapidated motel run by Judd (Neville Brand). We’re sad to report that according to a statement made by his close friend and mentee, Rick Baker, legendary makeup artist Dick Smith has passed away at the age of 92.
Rick Baker made the announcement via Twitter early this morning:
“The master is gone. My friend and mentor Dick Smith is no longer with us. The world will not be the same.”
Born in 1922, Richard Emerson “Dick” Smith was the master behind a multitude of iconic makeup effects. He began his makeup career in television in the 1940′s before later expanding to the world of film. Smith made memorable movie transformations possible with his innovative makeup applications and styles in a plethora of projects, including The Godfather (1972), Taxi Driver (1976), and Scanners (1981), to name just a few of many.
Horror fans likely best remember Dick Smith from the remarkable job he did transforming the innocent-looking Linda Blair into the pale-faced demon in 1973′s The Exorcist.

Despite frequently being listed among the great horror directors, Tobe Hooper will always have the hardest job of pleasing his fans. No matter what film he makes, it will always be compared to his 1974 classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. To this day it remains one of the greatest and most chilling horror films of all time and a true work of genius.
The same can‘t really be said of Crocodile or the overly goofy and unpleasant Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. Yet people seem to forget Hooper is capable of making films as good as Poltergeist or Salem’s Lot. There’s a giant hole in your backyard. It’s a gateway for demonic forces and pure evil. You’ve opened it because of a green, egg-shaped object, and are trying to combat it with a heavy-metal album from Europe. It’s a pretty awesome idea for a plot, and surprisingly, it worked. Add the fact that “Foleg” himself is actually a pseudonym for Danny Steinmann, who would go on to direct the fifth Friday The 13th, and there’s the clear suggestion of a creative history as tortured as any of the onscreen victims,...
