Tobias Menzies is revealing if he’ll really be returning for the upcoming final season of Outlander.
The 49-year-old actor actually played two characters on the hit show, Frank Randall and his ancestor Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall.
Tobias starred as a main cast member, portraying both characters, throughout the first four seasons of the show.
The actor recently confirmed his involvement or lack thereof in the show’s upcoming eighth season.
Keep reading to find out more…
“What am I allowed to say?” he teased to TVLine, before confirming, “It would be great. [But] no, you will not see me.”
This may not come as a shock to Outlander fans, as both have Tobias‘ characters have been dead since season three (Black Jack) and four (Frank), and he has not appeared on the show since the middle of season four.

Starz’s historical drama Outlander shares the story of British World War II nurse Claire Randall Fraser as she mysteriously goes back to 1743 Scotland. Claire, played by Caitriona Balfe, begins her story married to M16 officer-turned-scholar Frank Randall, played by Tobias Menzies. So, did Balfe and Menzies ever date in real life?
Did ‘Outlander’ stars Caitriona Balfe and Tobias Menzies date in real life?
Caitriona Balfe plays Claire Randall Fraser through all seven seasons of Outlander. She begins her journey married to Frank Randall, played by Tobias Menzies. Menzies also goes on to play Frank’s 18th-century ancestor, Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall.
While Claire and Frank start the show as a married couple, they don’t end that way. Claire falls for Scottish warrior Jamie Fraser, whom she later marries. But before Claire creates a future with Jamie, she’s caught between two worlds (and two men) who offer entirely different paths.

It’s been a tumultuous time for the Frasers and the MacKenzies in Outlander season seven, with Roger (Richard Rankin) and Bree’s (Sophie Skelton) son kidnapped in the 1980s, and the American Revolutionary War beginning back in the 18th century, where Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) struggle to stay alive amid mounting violence.
The seventh episode of season seven, “A Practical Guide For Time-Travelers”, leaves us with a shocking cliffhanger after Jamie faces the British forces in battle, with his illegitimate son William (Charles Vandervaart) fighting for the British during the First Battle of Saratoga. In the final shot of the episode, we see Jamie lying on the battlefield, covered in blood and seemingly dead, but what do Diana Gabaldon’s books tell us about Jamie’s fate? And what happens to Jamie’s family after these events transpire?

As Outlander nears its finale, speculation about the fate of Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) are rife among fans. Author Diana Gabaldon recently addressed one such conjecture revolving around Jamie. Still, her response might not be what fans were hoping for.
One fan posited that the series could conclude with Jamie inhabiting a future timeline with Claire. Gabaldon, however, made her stance unequivocally clear with a single, unambiguous response, dashing the hopes of those who love this idea.

Outlander author Diana Gabaldon is busy writing the 10th and final book in her popular, long-running literary series. At the same time, she has other projects in the works — including a prequel about Jamie Fraser’s parents and a companion book titled What Frank Knew. Recently, Gabaldon dropped an excerpt from the Frank-focused story. But she insisted that she’s not “actively” writing it at the moment.

In mid-February, Gabaldon took to Facebook to share a “fragment” of her eventual book titled What Frank Knew. I guess the odds are pretty good that two people traveling through the stones at different times will wind up with two of the worst characters we know.
Outlander Season 4 Episode 7 detoured a bit from the novel from what I gather after watching and doing a quick bit of research.
To be honest, the coincidences felt like too much.
There are a lot of things that seemed highly unlikely when it came to "Down the Rabbit Hole," but maybe that's why it was named after a fairy tale.
Why was Brianna wandering through the middle of a snowy mountaintop when we caught our first glance of her? Was a map going to help her in that particular location, or should she have maybe stuck to the nearby road that she walked to a bit later?
That was odd.

We talked to Outlander's Richard Rankin about why he's been so looking forward to Season 4.
When Roger Wakefield Mackenzie first pops up on Outlander, it is very much as a supporting character. First, he's the orphaned kid who is around being adorable during one of the worst periods of Frank Randall's life. Then, he's the handsome, accommodating historian who acts as Brianna's tour guide and unwittingly gets pulled into Claire's big secret.
This season, he's set to become something even more: a time traveller with his own adventures. We talked to actor Richard Rankin about the expansion of Roger's character and storyline in Outlander Season 4, and why it has been his favorite to play thus far.

His Royal Highness… Prince Philip. Netflix has released the first look at Tobias Menzies as the Duke of Edinburgh, husband and consort to the Queen in the third season of The Crown.
Menzies takes over from Matt Smith in seasons three and four to play the eccentric patriarch alongside Olivia Colman, who replaces Claire Foy as The Queen.
Elsewhere, in seasons three and four, The Exorcist star Ben Daniels will play Antony Armstrong-Jones, starring alongside Helena Bonham Carter’s Princess Margaret, in the two seasons, which will launch in 2019 and will begin in 1963 and will cover events such as the rise of the Beatles and England winning the soccer World Cup in 1966. Characters such as Camilla Parker Bowles will also start to emerge in the next season.

Tobias Menzies deserves a goodbye Emmy nomination for Best Drama Guest Actor for his last season of “Outlander.” Last fall Menzies ended his three-year run in the time-travel romance, in which he played dual roles as 18th century antagonist Black Jack and his 20th century descendant Frank Randall, the first husband of Claire (Caitriona Balfe). And the timing for Menzies could be just right since it was recently announced that he will be taking over the role of Prince Philip on “The Crown” from Matt Smith in its upcoming third season.
If you’re not familiar with Menzies by name you probably recognize his face as the character actor has worked in a number of award-winning shows. He’s appeared in the dramas “Rome” and “Game of Thrones” as well as longform programs “Black Mirror,” “The Honorable Woman” and “The Night Manager.” Menzies can also bring the funny as he...

Frank Randall may be dead, but Tobias Menzies will basically never be out of a job. E! News has confirmed that Menzies, who starred as both Frank and Black Jack Randall on Starz's Outlander for two and a half seasons, has been cast as the new Prince Philip on Netflix's The Crown for seasons three and four. Fellow prestigious British actor Matt Smith played the role for two years alongside Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II, who will now be played by Olivia Colman as the show jumps ahead a few years. Helena Bonham Carter will also join the show as Princess Margaret, replacing Vanessa Kirby. Aside from his often controversial and definitely polarizing...

The search is finally over, and Buckingham Palace has named its new Prince.
According to Deadline, Tobias Menzies (Outlander) has clinched the role of Prince Philip ahead of The Crown season 3, where he’ll replace the outgoing Matt Smith (Doctor Who) for the next two seasons.
Filming is expected to commence in the UK this summer, and we know Oliva Colman has already agreed to play the slightly older Queen Elizabeth II, while Helena Bonham Carter is attached to the part of Princess Margaret. The latter two characters were originally portrayed by Claire Foy and Vanessa Kirby throughout seasons 1 and 2.
For Menzies, this is another regal role to add to his growing collection, given he’s amassed credits on HBO’s Game of Thrones, Rome and, perhaps most notably, Outlander, where he owned the dual parts of Frank Randall and the sadistic Black Jack Randall.

It’s difficult enough for an actor to be tasked with transforming into a new person — in aspect, personality, movement and spirit — from role to role. But when double duty (or more) is required within the same project, that’s when the real challenge kicks in, because the viewer must be convinced that the same actor is distinctly different when they’re playing both parts in rapid succession, sometimes even side-by side or interacting with each other.
Dating back to shows like “The Patty Duke Show,” “Bewitched” and “I Dream of Jeannie,” the dual role usually allowed for storylines involving twins, cousins or other lookalikes. Ronald D. Moore envisioned a season of premium television, broken into one-hour segments, as soon as he read Diana Gabaldon’s first book in the historical fantasy romance series “Outlander.” It’s how his mind works. He saw the world, respected Gabaldon’s attention to research and detail — and her ability to write a bodice-ripping romance (more than 25 million copies sold worldwide) that’s packed with unexpected plots twists. Having worked in the “Star Trek” and “Battlestar Galactica” universes, Moore knows how to create a grounded, immersive world with engaging characters who carry you through the narrative. (Eight Season One episodes are on available on Netflix.) “Outlander” may be a fantasy, but it’s believable. And sexy as hell.
We spoke as “Outlander” Season 2 was unspooling on Starz, leaving behind the rugged Scottish highlands for Jacobean intrigue in Versailles. “It was great to do something fresh and completely different,” Moore said.

Starz’s Outlander has finally cast the role of Brianna, with newcomer Sophie Skelton nabbing the part, the network announced Thursday.
Warning: If you don’t want to be spoiled about Season 2 and beyond of the historical drama, leave this post now.
As you can see from the photo at the top of the post, the actress has already adopted red tresses for the role, described in Diana Gabaldon’s novels as Claire and Jamie’s statuesque, ginger-haired, very smart and rather grounded 20-something daughter.

We have a feeling there’s about to be a run on red hair dye in Hollywood.
At long last, Outlander has issued a casting call for Brianna, which TVLine has exclusively obtained. And if you don’t want to be spoiled about what’s ahead on the Starz series, get yerself outta this wee post now.
As fans of Diana Gabaldon’s series of Outlander novels know, the second book — Dragonfly in Amber, on which Season 2 is based — involves a huge time jump and introduces Claire and Jamie’s ginger-haired, statuesque 20-year-old daughter Brianna… whose last name happens to be Randall.

It's easy to recommend Ronald D. Moore's series "Outlander," based on Diana Gabaldon's bestselling novels (25 million copies sold worldwide), which just wrapped up Season One on Starz, to anyone who likes a bodice-ripping historical romance. The time-travel plot certainly sounds like femme fiction: after World War II, British nurse Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and her Ptsd husband Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies) go on vacation in the Scottish highlands, where one of his ancestors used to fight the 18th century Jacobite rebellion, to rekindle their marriage. It's working, until she disappears after touching an ancient rune stone in a forest clearing. She's whisked back in time to 1745, where she encounters the very same Captain "Black Jack" Randall (Menzies, natch) and falls in with a clan of Highlanders who are fiercely opposed to the British. This rough band of warriors look after her as they...

Is there a nastier character on television than "Outlander's" Black Jack Randall?
As cruel a schemer as "Game of Thrones'" Cersei Lannister, as cunningly manipulative as "Gotham's" Oswald Cobblepot, as homicidally ruthless as "Scandal's" Rowan Pope and as sexually sadistic as "GoT's" Ramsay Snow, Black Jack's may be the blackest hearted Big Bad of them all, played to malicious, all-too-believable perfection by Tobias Menzies.
With the first season of the Starz drama, adapted from novelist Diana Gabaldon's bestselling series by acclaimed writer-producer Ronald D. Moore, concluding on Saturday, Black Jack has only just begun his brutal, bloody torment of the heroic Highlander Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), who sacrificed himself to her freedom for his time-traveling love Claire (Caitriona Balfe) -- and, as readers of the books know, things get far, far uglier.

I’m finally all caught up on Starz’s TV adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander books, including last night’s new episode. (We’re getting new episodes next-day on Amazon U.K. Prime, which means Prime members get to see it for free in the U.K. Which is amazing. AMC’s Turn is doing the same thing. I don’t see how anyone is making money on this, and everyone deserves to get paid for their fantastic work. But I’m gonna enjoy it while I can, this lack of impact on my digital karma.)
Outlander is even better than I could have hoped. I think we need to thank Game of Thrones, the incredible success of which has demonstrated that people are very happy to take entertainment from slow-paced political machinations and other drama that is both personal and has a larger import… at least as long...

On "Outlander," Tobias Menzies plays a pair of very different characters. Frank Randall is dogged and dependable. Black Jack Randall is, as Menzies puts it, "a study in sadism." Black Jack is a nasty piece of work, but in certain corners of the internet, there are great affection for him. "I completely understand it," Menzies told me on the PaleyFest 2015 purple carpet for "Outlander." "Yeah. Of course. The Devil's sexy, isn't he?" Menzies explained, "I try and understand him as much as I can, make him as three-dimensional, as rooted in the life he's lead. I think he's a product of that war and that time, rather than just sorta randomly evil." Plus, it's just liberating to play the bad guy. "You get to say and do all of the things that you're not allowed to do in your own life and that is absolutely cathartic and enjoyable. There's a relish about it,...

Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe, and Tobias Menzies all walked the red carpet at last night’s PaleyFest presentation of Starz’s period epic Outlander, where we asked them the tough question: which historical figure’s bones would you jump?
First up was Tobias Menzies, better known as Blackjack Randall/Frank Randall, who didn’t even think twice before saying Marilyn Monroe. “She seems like the most gorgeous, sex kitten-ish, bundle of joy,” said Menzies.
As for Balfe, she set her sights on a classic, rugged American actor. “Paul Newman because he’s Paul Newman,” said Balfe. “Cool Hand Luke? Come on.”

But it’s Heughan, a.k.a. the love of every Outlander fan’s life Jamie Fraser, who took it the furthest back. “Cleopatra, wasn’t she supposed to be amazing?” said Heughan. “She bathed in milk and was really powerful. It probably wouldn’t last long, though. She’d probably have me killed.

Defenseless damsel in distress no more! When Outlander returns for the second half of its hit first season, Claire (Caitriona Balfe) is no longer the lost woman out of her time that she was when she accidentally hurtled back in time. Though she still hasn't found a way home to her own time and her husband Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies), she's making a new home for herself in 17th century Scotland with her new husband, Highlander hunk Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). Though the past has certainly come with its own complications, namely Frank's nasty ancestor Black Jack Randall (also played by Menzies), and he's developed an unfortunate obsession with hurting both Jamie and Claire. And that's...

We’re here to discuss the men of Outlander, or the OutMANders, as you might call them. I’ve heard “Outmanders” is actually used to encourage men to watch Outlander, but I’d like to think it’s a reminder for me focus on the real issue at hand while watching the show: the two main men, a.k.a. Jamie Fraser and Frank Randall. Who is the best for our heroine, Claire Beauchamp? Whom should she choose? (Who would you like to see in more sex scenes?) To all you spoilsports, we’re coming from the no-book outlook, seven episodes into the first season — so we are so far unprejudiced by whatever it is to come that you book-readers might already be aware of. If you've read the book, please don't spoil in the comments. Thank you. Lindsey: Welcome, Tara. I hear you are Team Jamie, which I feel...

“Outlander” star Tobias Menzies is headed back to Scotland on Sunday to finish filming the last few scenes of the time-traveling Starz drama's first season, but first he sat down with TheWrap to talk about his dual roles as 1940s’ upstanding gentleman Frank Randall and his 1740 doppleganger and ancestor, the cruel Red Coat known as Black Jack Randall. Saturday night's episode is a big one for Menzies as Jack comes face to face with Claire (Caitriona Balfe) after he almost assaulted her in the season premiere, and the scene is set for a tense, dramatic showdown. Outlander Review
Starz is continuing with its unique and engaging string of original series with Outlander. Based on the series of books by Diana Gabaldon, the show starts off with a major uphill battle ahead as it must face off with legions of adoring fans.
It’s the story of Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), a married combat nurse from 1945. On her honeymoon with Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies), Claire pokes her nose into druidic dancing and magical stones, and suddenly finds herself in 1743. Naturally, the first person she sees is Black Jack Randall (also Tobias Menzies), a British soldier who doesn’t have pleasant intentions toward her, or any of the Scotsmen in the area. Rescued from Randall’s clutches, she is taken to a group of Scottish fighters, and meets Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). Now she has to find a way to survive, and figure out what to do with her growing feelings for Jamie.

Hide your husbands, ladies! Caitriona Balfe is apparently capable of having some amazing chemistry with any man. Even an actor who, ultimately, will play her worst nightmare. This is the conclusion we've reached after watching this sneak peek from Outlander's third episode, airing this Saturday on Starz, in which we see her character, Claire (Balfe), say goodbye to her husband Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies), in a 1938 (if my math is right) flashback. Claire's going off to the battlefields to serve as a nurse. Frank's going off to serve as a military intelligence expert. It's a beautiful and touching scene. But what is perhaps most stunning is to see how much romantic chemistry...

Here’s the thing about the novel, at least the first one in Diana Gabaldon’s series (and I say this understanding the instant hatred I will earn): it’s tripe. The bare-bones plot of Gabaldon’s series is fantastic – a fiery 1950′s nurse who time-travels back to 18th century Scotland, is plunged into the conflict there, and falls in love with a Scottish warrior? You’ve got romance, time-travel, a fantasy element, war, and not one but two wildly disparate time periods to draw on. It’s literary gold.
Which made it all the more disappointing that Gabaldon buried what could have been a genuinely gripping saga in over-ripe prose that relied largely on long, rambling descriptions of nature occasionally interspersed with actual events. The romantic dialogue, while passable, certainly didn’t leap off the page, and I was genuinely mystified after reading the first novel as to...

“It’s just a big story, you know? The book is a big tale. It travels a lot and it goes to a lot of different places. And as I looked at it… the rights holder initially was trying to do it as a feature and I knew that it was never going to be a feature. You would lose everything that was special about the book once you stripped it down to two hours. And still, if you want to do the story justice, if you want to actually enjoy the experience the way the reader enjoys the experience, you have to take your time. You have to sort of drink in the landscape. You have to get to know the people. You need to let the moments breathe. You need to let the story just unwind a little bit. And to create that feeling in television, it just...

The press around Outlander, which premieres on Starz Saturday night but has already released its pilot on Youtube to nearly one million views, has been very positive—and often filled with caveats that it’s “feminist fantasy,” or at least directed at female audiences.
