I wish Flash of Genius were’t quite so staid, because it tells an important story, and one the likes of which we hear less and less of the more necessary they become: Robert Kearns, a Detroit engineering professor and part-time inventor, developed a device in the early 1960s to allow car windshield wipers to operate intermittently -- it’s a bigger safety issue than you might think, and this was a problem that, apparently, the big automakers had been trying to solve for years. But instead of working with Kearns, Ford stole his invention, which soon spread to the lines of all the other automakers. And then Kearns spent 30 years fighting one of the biggest corporations on the planet for a simple acknowledgment that what Ford did was wrong. (This is all true stuff: Philip Railsback’s script is based on a New Yorker article by John Seabrook.) This earnest film,...

DVD Rating: 2.5/5.0 Chicago – Greg Kinnear does solidly entertaining work in “Flash of Genius” and director Marc Abraham understands the basics of the inspirational crowd-pleaser, but the film ultimately feels like a missed opportunity to tell a more riveting version of the same story. The excellent design, great central performance, and an entire team with its heart in the right place go a long way in making “Flash of Genius” a worthwhile rental, but the screenplay by Philip Railsback misses the heart of this complex story.
One of the more underrated actors alive, Greg Kinnear, does an admirable job of selling the David-and-Goliath story of another little man struggling to take down a corporate giant, a story made all the more powerful in our current economic crisis. But I think there’s more to Bob Kearns than this Capra-esque take on his life story.

Philip Railsback, the late writer of Universal's upcoming drama "Flash of Genius," will have one of his final scripts brought to the screen by his actor-director brother Steve Railsback: the darkly comic drama "Barstow."
Keith Carradine and Scott Wilson are attached to play supporting roles in the Monterrey Pictures Entertainment feature, which follows three desperate characters, one of whom finds hope in a small, depressed town.
The writer died three years ago. Rights to the film were handed to his brother, who directed the 1994 indie spy thriller "The Flight of the Dove" and is best known as an actor in dozens of projects since the 1970s, including lead roles in "The Stunt Man" and "Helter Skelter."
The late scribe wrote "Barstow" 10 years ago after living among poor residents of the eponymous California town. Three of his other scripts are in development at various studios.
Monterrey's Joseph Majestic and David Mendez will produce the $4 million feature. Associate producer Steve Besser brought the project to Monterrey.
