Bollywood youth icons Ayushmann Khurrana and Vicky Kaushal shared the best actor prize at India’s annual national film awards, which were announced Friday.
Kaushal won for his mainstream breakout role in the hit war drama “Uri: The Surgical Strike,” which grossed about $50 million worldwide. First-time helmer Aditya Dhar won best director for the film, which also took home the awards for score and sound design.
Khurrana won for suspense thriller “Andhadhun,” another box office hit with $64 million. The film is an adaptation of Olivier Treiner’s 2010 French short “The Piano Tuner.” Director Sriram Raghavan and co-writers Arijit Biswas, Hemanth Rao, Yogesh Chandekar and Pooja Ladha Suri won the award for adapted screenplay. “Andhadhun” was also named best Hindi-language feature.
Keerthy Suresh won best actress for portraying actress Savitri in the biopic “Mahanati.” The film also won for costume design and best Telugu-language film.

Thiruvananthapuram, July 12 (Ians) Seven-time Kerala State Film Award winning cinematographer, M.J. Radhakrishnan passed away Friday evening at a private hospital here, said industry sources.
The 60-year-old cameraman suffered a cardiac arrest at his home here and passed away while on his way to the hospital.
He had helmed films like 'Deshadanam', 'Karunam' and 'Naalu Pennungal' to name a few.
Beginning his film career as an assistant to ace filmmaker and cinematographer Shaji N.Karun.
In a career spanning over a quarter of a century, he helmed 75 films, besides numerous documentaries and also worked for internationally acclaimed film maker Adoor Gopalakrishnan.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condoled the death of Radhakrishnan and said that the industry has lost a stalwart.

It has been announced officially that the veteran cinematographer and director Shaji N Karun’s upcoming film has been titled as Olu. He has roped in Shane Nigam and Esther Anil to play the leading roles in this flick which will be bankrolled by Dr. Av Anoop under his home banner Ava Productions.
The film will have its music composed by Sreevalsan. J. Menon and Isaac Thomas Kottukappally. While M.J. Radhakrishnan will be wielding the camera for Olu, Sreekar Prasad will be taking charge of the editing.

Malayalam master filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s first film in eight years, Pinneyum (“Once Again”) opens with the discovery of a dead man in a hotel room – and it will take the whole film for us to discover who this man is, and why he died.
Thirty-one year old Purushothaman Nair (Dileep) has been looking for work as an accountant since his graduation eight years earlier. His wife, Devi (Kavya Madhavan) works as a school teacher in order to sustain their extended family (her daughter, father and brother), and their apparently once loving relationship (theirs was a love marriage, approved of by family) shows the strain that Purushothaman’s unemployment creates. Finally, after much failure, Purushothaman obtains a visa and employment in the Gulf, following in the footsteps of so many other Malayalees who looked – and still look–to the Gulf as a way out of chronic unemployment.
